  • DescriptionA walk around Holywell Green and surrounding area of West Vale, Stainland and Greenland with a historical theme of old buildings of historical and architectural interest.
    It's an area local to me just a few miles from home and that makes it especially interesting for me. Once again the Calderdale landscape helps give a great fertile and natural background to all the man made structures.

      Hello Elizabeth and thank you for commenting. I'm just learning myself, so a lot of the finer details will be missing and most likely there is more to discover.
      Didn't realise how interesting and beautiful the local area was until I decided to take up walking. A nice mix of countryside, hilly landscape and historical buildings.

    I’ve lived in West Vale for a year and a half now and never spotted even half of the things you’ve pointed out here- will be going for a walk now!

      Hello and thanks for commenting. I'm sure there is much more to explore and discover so all being well i'll be walking the area again some time.
      I must admit it's taking me a long time to discover that there is so much of interest in our own local areas. I started walking/hiking around 17 years ago just at random not knowing what to expect or what I would see or pass by or perhaps even notice along the way.
      I did a few walks in this area prior and each time seem to discover new things. I remember when I first came across Shaw Park and it's Medieval castle style wall enclosure I was intrigued by it all. It's a great fantasy of Norman and Medieval times. Of course it's the privilege of being a wealthy land owner and Textile Mills etc to be able to create it (Mr Samuel Shaws back garden), but we too can enjoy it now.
      Thanks to the Internet and and some websites by local historians and enthusiasts I was able to learn a bit more myself about it as well as the history in the surrounding areas. I'm always wondering what I'll discover next. It's all good fun. Please feel free to comment anytime and/or let me know what you discover. Cheers Nick.

      Hi Asma and thanks for the kind comments.
      I'm sure there is a lot more to discover as my knowledge is just from walking about and noticing all these buildings and then 'googling' a bit as to their origins. If you live local and maybe like to venture out too, please do comment on anything you come across. I'm always looking to understand and discover the Calderdale and other surrounding areas a little more. Cheers Nick.

    Superb architecture spanning the centuries . Always find the older dwellings most fascinating .. Cheers nick

      Thanks Andrew, Yes the older buildings are the more fascinating ones.
      I often find them a timely reminder too, if I grumble too much, of life being much more difficult back then, and especially so for the poorer working class.
      Love the replica Norman castle style entrance at Shaw park at Holywell green. That was a surprise find for me just on a casual local walk one day. It just had to feature on a video. 😊Cheers Nick.

    St Helens well holywell green! We used to live on st Helen's square back in 1953 when I was born, they were little (and i mean little) one up and one down outside shared lav, the well was at the top of the square I have pictures of it taken back then, we moved to elland in 1957, my maternal grandparents were from Copley and ovenden

      Hi thanks for commenting. Just behind the well are a row of bungalows ( look like 60's/70's buildings). I take it, those one up one down houses been demolished then.
      I've been out and about around Elland a few times ( though not filmed anything) and noticed quite a few historical buildings, so hopefully I'll be doing a filmed walk when I know the area a little better. Copley is a spot I'm familiar with as I've done a few walks passing through. I know that Edward Ackroyd (Wealthy Mill owner) who built (paid for) All Souls church in Halifax (and the area of Ackroydon) also built St Stephens at Copley and that he had a Mill close by just across the river opposite the Church (demolished since and contains houses now). Very Interesting and I hope to do a decent video about him and his buildings around Halifax some time also. So much interesting history locally to explore.

    Used to take my children through the ruins about 15 years ago and over the bridge it wasn't blocked off then . Used to camp out in the church hall with the brownies .

      @nickgcbond  Před 2 lety

      Sounds like you had great fun back then. I think the bridge has succumbed to the weather over time so it's just a safety precaution to block it off, though this video was about two years ago, so perhaps the council or any local friends of the park may have since done some repairs.
      I'll have to pop back again some time. It's a lovely spot. Thanks for commenting and ATB. Cheers Nick. 😊

      Hello and thank you for the kind words. Just wondered, do you live locally at all in the area of Calderdale or nearby? Holywell Green and the surrounding area is just a few miles away from me and I was pleasantly surprised what I discovered when I started taking a look around the local area on foot. I'm still always investigating and looking. Cheers Nick.

    Great apart from the wind noise ...

    • @nickgcbond
      @nickgcbond  Před 2 lety

      Cheers Harley G. Yes the wind noise is undesirable and I didn't react early enough to try to solve it, so a lot of the earlier videos are affected. However my more recent videos are more 'wind friendly' as I glued a home made wind shield around the camera microphone which has been a huge improvement. Thanks for commenting and ATB, Nick.
