Understated elegance was a hallmark of the Federal period, and this home is a perfect example of that.

Thank you for this. Being originally from Philadelphia as a kid i always thought this type of history was boring. Now that I'm grown i can't get enough of it. As like many other Cities Philadelphia has a lot of rich history. Just like learning about Stephen Girard who was one of Philadelphia's philanthropist, as well as Mr.Pratt

My favourite is that it is still standing and not torn down as so many other grand houses are.

I like this house a lot, It's elegant, not "obnoxious". I could see myself living in it if I had money, but not trying to "blow away" everyone with it. It's old school "Buick" versus "Cadillac" (Back when those will still premium brands). "rich people bought Cadillacs, wealthy people bought Buicks"

This lovely home reminds me of Edgemont, designed by Thomas Jefferson for a neighbor. It also has an octagonal drawing room but has porticoes on all four sides. There's even a Fisk Kimball connection.

Fisk Kimbel was dear friends of the Stotesbury’s. Kimble at the was restoring Monticello. Much of the shrubbery at Whitemarsh Hall were specimens from Monticello, much were full grown Box from abandoned properties so as to provide a mature formality at Whitemarsh Hall. Edward Stotesbury was President of the Fairmont Park Commission and would have be well familiar with Lemon Hill and the other 12 park houses….3 have been burned down by the usual suspect’s. Fisk Kimbel was so hoping all those years that WH would be left to the PMA as a museum setting for 18th century paintings, furniture and sculpture. Then the Depression hit and didn’t go away for 10 horrid years.

Lemon Hill reminds me of Castle Tucker in Wiscasset, ME. Built in 1803 and has simular rounded rooms, which I thought was pretty unique. Perhaps, it was a more common architectual feature in the Tidewater region, taking after Montichello.

I noticed the checkerboard pattern to the entrance hall floor. I heard that the checkerboard design or layout has a connection to Freemasonry. Ken, maybe you or one of the viewers knows more about this: is the floor design just for decoration or did Henry Pratt have a connection with the Masonic Lodge?
