Larry is no doubt a legend, and a massive innovator in the realm of professional automotive photography. He's got a great attitude about helping the sport thrive through very creative ways. I really loved listening to this episode and hunting for helpful guidance in his words. I walked away with some great stuff. There's a major point where I think he's getting off base here -- watermarking. And again, I say the following with all respect to the guy's work, work ethic, and overall contribution to bringing eyes and love to motorsports. I want to clarify when I say watermarking -- I mean an aesthetic logo that is simple and unobtrusive. Not like a patterned wallpaper stretched across the entire image. I think that looks ugly and takes away from the feature, which is the shot of the car.
Hearing Larry describe his early days of email lists and roughing it to get his name out there -- that's an entirely different, old school world of brand building. And it paid off for him massively. It's akin Joe Rogan being in the UFC in the early days, who also has earned that position. So maybe a larry chen watermark wasn't necessary, but a world that functions through social media and brand recognition means that a recognizable watermark can be what sets you apart from everyone else. And if your shot is going to end up in front of hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of people on an influencer's page, it's really going to help to have your branding show up there. And if you're really attempting to take care of the people you're shooting photos of by helping promote them and really capture them looking like badasses with marketable shots, they'll come to you when they see what you're posting -- especially if the posts are coupled with good copy. If you're looking at it as a promoter instead of just as a photographer.
It was frustrating to hear Larry frame watermarking as "this is all mine and you can't have it" and frame not watermarking as an altruistic gift to the sport. It takes time, money, effort to make it to these events. Sleeping on 5 different floors for a 5 day event or in the back of my car is very much relatable to my current situation. That's a way to do things, but not necessary. The romanticized 'starving artist' thing is a trope that needs to die. Being a starving artist means just means you're either not good, you don't value yourself enough, or you're bad at communicating that value. Having a recognizable brand that's present in my work means I build a recognizable presence on social media and create demand for myself within the industry so I can actually make a career out of this, bring more eyes to motorsports, and experience some (more) of what Larry has been able to experience.
If your photography is good enough, the drivers will share your shots, watermark or no watermark and they'll be happy to fly your logo on their page because you nailed the hero shots of their run. I started without watermarks -- big influencers and really well off parts companies were taking my shots and leaving no credit or payment for their promotions. I've routinely given away unwatermarked shots for prints to dudes who are spending every last dime on parts and working doubles to keep their racecar on the track and support their family. I send entire sets to dudes like that all the time because I want them to have nice prints. I've done this with brands I believe in and want to build relationships with as well.
Big influencers and parts companies don't really need to be subsidized at all. Larry mentioned how there's not enough media people surrounding motorsports -- that's why. It's difficult to figure out how to break into it in a way that will pay the bills. Building a brand that's bigger than just the photography or the video, and building a promotions company with a recognizable brand is how you do it and get people to take you seriously. If you're in media and you're not branding your shots that you're sending out, you're shooting yourself in the dick. When you go up to the owner of a company and introduce yourself, do you want them to say "Who?" and then you go "Oh, remember those cool photos that ButtEnchilada327 on CZcams reshared a few weeks ago on his insta and it went viral? Yeah I took those shots of his bus" or do you want them to be like "Oh wow, *you* shot those photos?"
Anyway, this is something I've given a lot of thought to. Not trying to kick Larry's dick in here. Again, he's been wildly successful on the path that he carved and has a lifetime of wisdom to draw from with motorsports photography, but it's a timeless ego thing with successful creatives to take wack and out of touch moral stances on how other people choose to present their work.
