  • Wanting a stable platform to fit onto the existing stainless frame, A carbon fiber hard top was constructed. This gives the boat extra storage for surf boards and kayaks, it's stable enough to stand or jump off of and the black carbon underside helps with sun glare. Check out how we made this in Part 1 of our 3 Part series.

    Fascinating!
It really helps us to understand just how complex these things are to fabricate.
Thank you so much for sharing.

Needs more layers of cf..you shouldve sandwiched it too.. flexing like crazy

Why didn't use a honeycomb in the middle of the layers instead of a foam?
Considering it's going to weight bearing why didn't you layer more carbon fiber twill down?

    • @jamesperreault4506

honeycomb would just fill in with resin and make it to heavy.. honeycomb works best with preprg carbon.

Honeycomb works best for flat vertical surfaces, like bulkheads. That hard top is going to be curved. It OK for floors, as long as you cover it with a lot of glass and you reinforce mounting points. I fish on a boat that they used it for the floors, about half of the outside decks have been replaced with foam. Separation of the honeycomb from the outer layers is very common, requiring expensive replacement.

Rigidity should be in the structure of the hard top instead of relying on the carbon to stiffin it. Also low density foam under such a thin laminate will have a tendency to delaminate.

They are called pleats not darts, and you guys didn’t compromise the resin hardening by adding that glue to it? I’ve never seen that? And you didn’t really show the end result on that section, just wondering..

Most of the projects you see here, we used corecell foam.

Odd mixing glues and then when did the outer skin go on? Also pleats not darts. Darts are cuts in fabric material. Still thanks for the vid.

    hi!
what kind of foam is that?
    open cell or closed cell?
    thank you!

    • @mirceaandreighinea

@@Dr.Vincent_D_Gilmer Wow, long ago i was interested in the subiect. My thinking now, after some research (again, long ago), is that that foam is closed cell. There is no reason for open cell. With closed cell the resin makes contact just the right amount, on the surface, and making the right mechanical lock (with its porous surface). This is what i know/understood. Good luck! Mircea
