    In this much requested video we pose the question, how far can an air rifle be deadly? Not enough credit is given to air rifles, but the performance of this.457 caliber Texan from Airforce Airguns may change your mind.

      No you'd really struggle to get a springer to shoot well above 16fpe. The effort of cocking alone would make it impractical, and you've never get it shooting accurately with the double recoil. Springers perform best around 12fpe.

    • @TheZombieburner
      @TheZombieburner Před 7 lety +3

      Not quite. I have a springer that drops about 20FPE and it's only about a 35 pound cocking effort and makes quarter sized groups.
      12FPE is only a baseline because lots of the companies are English and the English limited guns to 12FPE by law.
      I've also got a hatsan that's a .30 caliber break barrel, it's about a 50 pound cocking effort, and it's easy to shoot accurately. Hard to cock, but not so bad with a little bit of break-in.

    This reminds me of a time whilst on the surface (sub sailor) and the weapon's officer decides to have some small arms training. I report to the bridge and am handed a .45 Thompson, semi auto mode. I picked a target and let a round go. It seemed like forever for that bullet to hit the target (about 200 meters give or take). Timing bullet trajectory to target in this video brought back some good memories of my military career. Cheers!

( But then more powerful then a Walther P99QA ) . On the other side the ammo is cheap. Besides don't want to walk all day with a scuba tank on your back ;) was not this rifle I was talking about by the way.

    What amazes me most is that a .457" air rifle retains 60% of its muzzle energy out to 440 yards. Mainly because it's already traveling so slow. It's actually quite efficient from a ballistic standpoint, even if it does drop 50 feet at 440 yards. Compare that to a 55-grain .223 Remington leaving a 20" barrel at 3240 ft/sec. At 440 yards, that projectile only retains 20% of its muzzle energy. That's very inefficient. But because it started out so blazingly fast, it arrives at 440 yards having dropped less than 4 feet. So there is a tradeoff between trajectory flatness and terminal performance of a projectile. You have to give something to get something.

    I don’t know if anybody’s done this, but in terms of penetrating power and damage at say 50 yards, 75 yards, 100 yards for hunting which will have the most penetrating power a 177 caliber, 22 caliber, or a 25 caliber? You could also test three different pellets, in terms of penetrating power for each caliber. I think it would be very interesting.

    Lewis and Clarke used an Air Gun back in 1803 when they crossed America, it was a 40 caliber best that I remember, the tank of gun was in the stock and held about 900 psig., it took around 1500 strokes of a bicycle type pump to fill it to capacity. They would put on shooting exercises at most Indians Villages to impress the Indians and bring a little fear into them since this air rifle could put a hole in a two in. board at two hundred yards, the Indians were very impressed and knew that they were out gunned by this weapons performance. The word spread among other Indian tribes along the way west so Lewis and Clarke as history told it, had very few run-in's with other Hostile Indians...

I do that, cheap and works great. Also I use a drone with an iPad to see my hits at long range. Don’t even fly the drone, just turn it on at the target on a stand, which saves battery. Then use the app on an iPad back at your bench.

    Question: do you find you get that supersonic crack in normal weather conditions? According to Wiki and other sources, air rifle bullets start having a significant drop in efficiency if they fully break the sound barrier, though there could be many reasons for exceptions in this case, hence my question.

    I really enjoy your vids, I've got a .50 cal hammer, air guns are kinda hard to explain to my friends who only know powder guns. But I think they are impressive, I feel lucky to have chosen a .50 because of the access to so many bullets in .50 , I use black powder bullets in mine at .510 . My friends are amazed at the power and accuracy, even my big bore loving friends smile when they touch one off and feel the stock push into their shoulders from an air gun. LOL don't tell the government these things are bad ass. And can be mailed right to your house.

      Jan Hendrik Franke yes 1 yard is equal to .9144 of a meter.There is DECIMAL POINT there in case you missed it.So to convert yards to meters you multiply them by .9144 to get your answer in meters...........Or would you prefer to convert yards into inches so you can use centimeters or millimeters first and then into meters?lol

      The on gun tank will give you about 5 to 10 shots depending on what weight of bullet you are using. There are smaller tanks called buddy bottles that you can tote around with you, usually a 100 cubic inch buddy bottle will give you about 5 or 6 full fills on the gun and will easily fit in a small back pack.

There are plenty of wannabes and people who have never taken any professional training too...so before you plunge in the deep end, seek the professional instruction from a NRA certified instructor. DISCLAIMER: Guns are weapons, and as such they are designed to kill or maim. Therefore, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with safe handling before you pick one up, and no one you meet on the internet or see in a video can be substituted for professional instruction.
