Please, treat yourself to Alison Krauss singing 'Jacob's Dream.' I recommend the version where she is in the studio with the band, so that you can see her. It is a ballad about a true story, "The Lost Children of the Alleghenies," from the 1800's. The song is heartbreaking, her delivery is devastating.
I'm glad you finally got to experience Patty Loveless singing this important song. I tend to see this song as a memorial to them old coal miners like my Grandpa. My Grandpa mined in Knott County Kentucky and like many others from that time and place was taken by Black Lung. I haven't studied to much on it because of my Grandpa, but its caused by that black coal dust getting in your lungs and turning your Lungs black. If memory serves Patty is from Pike County Kentucky. She's a very talented vocalist. Another song by Patty that I can unfortunately relate to is You don't even know who I am. Also Lord I hope today is good by Don Williams hits home nowadays. The harsh realities of modern life is you do the best you can,but nothings ever good enough.
What a tremendous last line. “…and you spend your life digging coal from the bottom of your grave.”
Now you need to hear Patty sing with Vince Gill on “When I Call Your Name.” Her soaring harmony over his high tenor will make you levitate.
Patty was the perfect person to do this song!
Ky boy here. Glad you said yes to this song and miss Patty
Patty is also a cousin to county legend Loretta Lynn and Loretta's also legendary sister singer Crystal Gayle, singing talent was strong in those genes!
As a grandson of a coal miner with Black Lung, this song always hits hard.
Whoever Trixie is - thank you for sponsoring. "That's the place where I trace my bloodline" - lots of sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters here in these comments.
Harlan county boy here and this song speaks facts. Now without the mines there is no jobs. Working at Walmart makes you big time if you stay. When my dad left there in the 1960’s there were 75,000 people in the county. Now it’s down to about 25,000 and dropping. It’s a huge land area but you can basically call the entire county a ghetto with some folks with old money still. Johnny Knoxville did a movie there and his trailer he lived in was on our old property. He was really very inviting. It’s not like it’s his kind of people. lol. Great people, just downright poor
Absolutely love Patty. She was one of the greatest in the 80's and 90's which was the last gasp of real country music.
Coal mining in the mid-Atlantic and the sorrows associated with that have been the driving force in a number of songs. Here Patty Loveless delivers a powerful number as strong and as deeply sad as any. Her strong and very special voice imparts both the sadness and paradoxically the beauty of the genre. Loved your reaction and analysis.
Check out Ralph Stanley and Patty Loveless singing “Pretty Polly” live at the grand old Opry, if you like this you’ll love that.❤
This song is such a favorite of mine. I'm so glad that you really loved it too. Patty's voice is just stunning!!! Great job!!
This song was played at the end of 5 of the 6 season finales on the TV show Justified…
Season 1 & 2 sung by Brad Paisley
Season 4 by Dave Alvin
Season 5 by Ruby Friedman
Season 6 by Darrell Scott who was the writer & original singer of the song.
My Dad’s side of the family is from Harlan…….this song describes the plight of the people there perfectly
My grandfather worked in the coal mines for decades before moving his family away from West Virginia, then died in just a few years from Black Lung. My mother grew up in mining country before leaving as a young adult. We often visited family 'back home' during my childhood, and to this day make visits to family cemeteries. It's true that of those touched by those places, even those who move elsewhere never completely escape that life.
My grandfather was also a coal miner although he was a Pennsylvania coal miner, he also died from black lung very young.
Her singing style used in this song is very specific to Blue Grass Music.
I had the pleasure of seeing Patti in the second row. Her voice blew every one away. Fun fact Patti is a relative of Loretta Lynn.
Loved this song and her voice. Thanks Maggie. 😊
This song and this rendition is Patty's masterpiece imo. So sad, so beautiful, so powerful! So glad you love it too.
Patty also sings a duet of "Pretty Polly" with bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley where she holds a note forever and a nuther ever, stunning and delighting Ralph and the crowd. She's a ringer!
Perfect example of the magic of music. So love this song and this rendition. And why would the sun come up at 10am and down at 3pm? Seems odd. When you live in a north-facing holler in Kentucky, that's all the sun you get. Perfect illustration of the gloom and despair they all faced.
The whole documentary can be viewed here on youtube and for a more fun watch..check out Patty singing Pretty Polly with the great Ralph Stanley or Daniel Prayed with Ricky Skaggs.
Darrell Scott wrote more excellent songs btw..also has a good sound himself. I suggest checking out "River Take me"and "A Crooked Road"...dude's a fine storyteller! This was a reacyion video really getting me back in some old videos from some of my fave genres Bluegrass and Americana👍
There's a video of Patty singing an old bluegrass gospel tune "Daniel Prayed" with Ricky Skaggs and Carmella Ramsey (the fiddle player here who sang the high harmony). Vince Gill is in the background on that video playing bass. It's a remarkable performance.
The song is actually a cover originally written and sung by another Kentucky native Darrell Scott. Another Patty Loveless version was sang at the 2022 CMA awards, with Chris (also a Kentucky native) and Morgane Stapleton, with Darrell Scott playing a Dobro in the background.
8:57 I love the harmony between these three
I'm from eastern ky, born and raised, still live here.
That was fantabulous
Another great one, Maggie! My parents are from Harlan, so this song is a family favorite. Since you’ve now “met” Miss Loveless, I’d like to suggest another stellar voice in bluegrass / country - Alison Krauss [and Union Station]. A good start would be “The Lucky One”, especially live. Her most common description is angelic, and rightly so. I’ve been subscribed to your channel quite awhile as one of the throngs of Home Fries. I wish you well, M’am!
Jacob's Dream is another must from Alison Krauss. This song really shows that she is one of the best songstress story tellers of all time.
Vince Gill featuring Patty live, singing Pocket Full of Gold from the CMA awards 1991
Love this woman, and also miss twin fiddles in country.
hell yeah, that's a song worth reacting too, patty is something special
would have loved to have heared patty sing with the cranberrys, imagine that
This the theme song to the FX show Justified based on the story Fire in the Hole by Elmore Leonard about a Coal Miner who grew up in Harlan County and became a U.S. Marshal and then returns to Harlan County where he has to deal with his past and has to clean up the crime in Harlan County
Awesome again Maggie ❤
Check out “Pocket Full of Gold” with Vince Gill and Patty Lovelace.
Outstanding!!
live version of course
Born in Kentucky into a family which came through the Cumberland Gap with Daniel Boone , this song makes my hair stand on end .
Phenomenal song.... wonderful reaction...
Thanks!
Powerful….chills
Harlan is my hometown, this song gets me every time. I have lived and traveled all over America. Florida to Washington I range all over the states. The line "they moved out west to Pineville" makes me laugh, and then makes me sad every time. I laugh because Pineville is a staggering 30 miles away, then I'm sad because to far to many folk from home, that IS a staggering move.
Love patty loveless. The young lady with dark and the pink skirt has a beautiful voice.
what a powerful and stunning video and love your sing along with the strings-maybe try this on a stump maggie? reminds me of the song coal miners daughter...
If you want to be schooled in country bluegrass....Patty Patty Patty
Listen to her singing Pretty Polly with Ralph Stanley. Amazing
You have GOT to see Patty and Ralph Stanley to the duet 'Pretty Polly'
Love Patty
I' a 68 year old former coal miner and many of my former co-workers have passed away.
Many of them much younger than I am.
We all knew how dangerous the work was but we never gave much thought to how it would still be killing us years after leaving the mines.
Classic old country that tells a story, that stirs the heart, that makes you feel glad to be alive and better off.
"... and you spend your life digging coal from the bottom of your grave." A harsh reality and great songwriting.
Her and Chris Stapleton did a live version also
Patty is the best, heard her live 3-4 times at Renfro Valley, she is amazing.
This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. There are a few renditions of the song and every one has the same effect on me. Please check out Darrell Scotts as well as Brad Paisleys version, not necessarily in a reaction but just for your own listening pleasure. I am a big fan of the television show Justified and it was based in Harlan county Ky. and the song was featured in it as well.
Love Patty, love you too...
❤
Patty Loveless was born Patricia Lee Ramey on January 4, 1957, in Pikeville, Kentucky to Naomi (née Bowling; 1921-2006) and John Ramey (1921-1979). She is the sixth of seven children. Through her patriline, Loveless is a distant cousin of country singers Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle.Loretta's father died of this black lung disease as well!
Between land theft, coal wars, moonshine wars and just plain Scots Irish cussedness a lot of blood has been shed in the Appalachian mountains.
I’ve been waiting and hoping you would react to this song. Even though you might never read this comment.
Very Nice, Trixie.
Miss Trixie wooo
You could try Here I Am live from this same concert.
Love your reactions... I like it that you appreciate country music... I am a musician myself as a drummer and guitarist... I am now interested in the pedal steal and love the dobro guitar... The dobro is played upright with a slide bar... I would love to see your reaction on the dobro guitar that features in bluegrass and country
Hey man me too i understand what you are saying
👍❤️
Great song, Great singing. My grand father on my mothers side died of black lung in the mines in Colorado. I am 74. someone plz...what is the significance of "bitter brew your drinking"? Thanks.
Patty did this song at the cma's last year with Chris Stapleton and his wife, it's a beautiful rendition of the song to you should check it out!

I think you almost have to be male to get this song, women didn't die in the mines. And they never will
