As a violinist it hurt me seeing number 3 in for so long. She used minimal amounts of bow length near the top of the bow, only used vibrato where necessary (and it was quite shaky) and stayed relatively low on the strings (lower octaves and also positions) I’ve been playing for 5 years and that’s easily not 25 years of playing.

It's why any professional Classicl or Jazz musician can learn how to play any modern pop song within a few listens. A biologist can't become a physicist after reading one book and vice versa. The fundamentals of music ring true across all genres. The fundamentals of biology are not the same as the fundamentals of physics. I am not saying that he needs to be able to play classical music but even non musicians can tell that she did not sound good

As a violinist myself for 10+ years, watching them think she was a professional pained me…her level is beginner but props to her for coming out there and doing her best.
yeah I only played cello a few years and you can just tell with the inconsistent bowing and mediocrity (I also had inconsistent bowing and mediocrity)
As someone who doesn’t play any musical instruments whatsoever, it blew my mind Dave thought she was an actual musician. Even I understand that to play a classical instrument professionally, you have to be incredibly good. From common sense you can tell she probably just played violin in high school as a hobby or something

As someone who used to play the violin for a bit, no shame for her, but she played like our 7th-grade orchestra, it was so clear to me that it wasn't her. That being said she did insanely well for not playing in 10 years. She probably practiced before the shoot a bit. I swear it has only been 3 years since I played and I am dogshit at it now.

Yeah, I played cello in an orchestra for 6 years and I felt like it was clear to anybody, even non musicians, to tell it wasn't her. She is is so scratchy and uncoordinated. That being said, good for her having that courage to pull the instument back out and play on video.
I just love the instrument, but you could tell that she had experience BUT hasn’t played it in a minute. There were many moments where I was just thinking “it’s sounds so..scratchy and crooked” still a good job for not practicing for 10 years tho
I played violin for 12 years without intentions to go pro. Can't believe some of them actually thought she could be professional with constantly hitting wrong strings and all. She probably was around my level 10 years ago, violin is a really hard instrument that relies heavily on muscle memory so you will lose like 80% of your skills after such a long break from practising.
Yeah to me it felt pretty clear that she either hasn't played in a fat minute, or took lessons for a bit then stopped. Props for being able to pick things up by ear, but in no way was the actual playing that of someone with 20+ years of training.

The violinist sounded like she just picked up a violin a week ago. She sounds like a beginner even to a non-violinist. I have not finished watching it yet but the afro guy sounds very alternative, would have loved to have heard more from him. Won't be shocked if he's the actual musician.

Nah, you can clearly hear that she has played before. The piece she played in the beginning was definitely not a total beginner piece. She probably used to be pretty decent, but since she stopped playing 10 years ago, her technique is really rusty.
She clearly had some musicality - a sense of rhythm and a pretty good ear (notice how fast she found the key, and also listen to her note choice, which works well with the harmony). You don't develop that in a week.
But definitely not a professional with 20+ years of experience. If I had to guess (without knowing about the 10-year break), I would have said she's played for a couple of years.
