- I’ve been wanting to review a prehistoric mammal for the longest time but just didn’t know where to start.
Addedum 1: I mentioned in the video that this is my first, but thanks to viewer Antônio Rocha I realised I completely forgot about the iToy Paraceratherium that I reviewed 🤦♂️, so it's actually my second prehistoric mammal.
Addendum 2: I was a little puzzled what those regularly spaced bumps along the back could be.
Thanks to viewer paleodude for furnishing that info: these are also tubercles, that contain specialized hair called vibrissae, which may have a sensory function.
Doing the PNSO Mosasaurus reminded me of another even older PNSO sea animal that I have… and that decided me! Let me introduce you to the PNSO Basilosaurus, my very first PNSO model!
Even from its beginnings, PNSO showed much promise, as exemplified in the blend of detail, paint application and scientific accuracy in this early model. I was also delighted that PNSO was tackling not just the usual suspects that were popular, safe, yet, so common. As we have seen, PNSO has lived up to its original promise!
Prehistoric mammals are fascinating creatures because they are so distant and yet so familiar. It is a wonder to explore the idea of evolution because mammals are more relatable in many ways. The notion that the largest animals on the planet came from somewhere, and that somewhere was the land, as smallish animals, should bring us a sense of not just humility, but also inspiration.
I hope to share more with you in the near future!

Yikes! I made a crazy mistake. I stated this is my first prehistoric mammal review, but I completely forgot about the iToy Paraceratherium! Thanks to Antônio Rocha for pointing that out! So this is my SECOND prehistoric mammal... but it definitely is my first PNSO model, that much I'm sure! 😁
The ridges along the back is just tubercles again which have trapped hairs called vibrissae in them that help them detect vibrations in the water. Many whales have been spotted with a neat row of tubercles along their backs so it's not far fetched that it's in a nice row. I hope this helps :)
Thanks you Paleodude! Looking at photos now I can see those tubercles evenly spaced along the backs, and I am sure you have hit it on the head and are 100% correct!
Responses like yours are an example of what the Internet and CZcams comments section can be used for a positive force: learning from people who know more about something than you! 😁 I'll be sure to amend my description box to reflect your pearl of knowledge! 😊
5 years, and it's still look so beautiful & very awesome as a prehistoric whale, and is a *"whale of a time"* .
Also like all of your videos, this one was very good and very good,so that's quite nice & lovely.
Hahah great phrase that! This one really was an awesome piece, and my first PNSO model ever. At least I got _that_ correct; I made a mistake about this being my first prehistoric mammal. It's actually my second.
Absolutely love your reviews! Love the detail you research; it is greatly appreciated by us all I'm sure! Even back in 2016 it looks like PNSO where heading for greatness!
Wow, thank you Richard! I do try to share a bit about the animals I review because I think it will help people appreciate their models more, and perhaps help them make a decision on a model. I love dinosaurs (and slowly learning more about prehistoric mammals too) and I am happy you do too! 😁
I love all sorts of animals
Same
Thanks!! , you have inspired me to order one for myself for my project I am doing , This truly is a very fascinating whale
It's extremely fascinating to read about the evolution of the whales. I wish I had more time to rad about prehistoric mammals, especially whales and elephants. I'd love it if PNSO decided to do an Ambulocetus!
Finally getting my hands on this vintage PNSO Model in a few days....love your review bro...
Wow this is a very good piece! It's hard to get, or at least, not at a reasonable price. You can see way back then, PNSO already had the beginnings of greatness! 😁
Cool toy
Definitely! Educational too!
PNSO does such an astounding job with these aquatic figures I think I personally like this Basilosaurus more than the mosasaurus. Something about prehistoric aquatic mammals/Whales are just so fascinating. Excellent review DD :)
Thanks Austin! I'm actually hoping PNSO will tackle Ambulocetus. They've certainly shown they can more than handle non-dinosaurs, especially that recent Atopodentatus!
@@DinosDragons Completely agree! Especially seeing an Ambulocetus in a swimming pose or looking like it’s wading in a river about to strike!
Brilliant that you mentioned convergent evolution! I was going to say that for when I got my model.
There's plenty of similarities between these two magnificent animals and you'll no doubt pick out more features of convergent evolution. If you get both the PNSO Basilosaurus and Mosasarus, you will be very happy!
@@DinosDragons Did a review on the PNSO Mosasaurus. And I was very happy!
Im quite late but Im glad I watched this cuz now I really really want that Shantungosaurus! O' my it's stunning and I love the color scheme! Looked pics from Google. Even if It's old ish I LOVE it!
I had the Shangtungosaurus, very large and impressive! Unfortunately it couldn't balance at all, and I gave it away to someone who wanted it. But yes, the old PVC models are really good. The Ceratosaurus is worth a look if you can get one!
@@DinosDragons Ah I see. I have seen the Shantungosaurus in eBay for good prices. I will get it lol. And actually I have the PNSO's big Nick the Ceratosaurus (58cm) it's amazing too!
First pre historic mammal review? Funny thing, bellow this video shows a paraceratherium (y toy) review from you... Nevertheless, beautiful figure, i've been meaning to start a marine animals collection at around 1: 35, and this one would be perfect to start. Next times will show if it's possible or not, i have high hopes for the near future... Thanks for the review.
YIKES!!! How could I forget about that beautiful _paraceratherium_ !? 😝Lol I better add an erratum to my synopsis page!
Well, 1:35 for prehistoric mammals as far as I know are quite rare. The EoFauna ones obviously, but other than some offerings from Dinone Studio most mammals are around 1:20. Of course whether they actually are or not is another story!
Thanks Antônio!
@@DinosDragons True, true... Safari as a few, collecta also, i mean, more like 1/40 or so, but i get whatever i can. Let's hope Eofauna puts some more mamals out soon. They are crazy good, i would say.
Amazing review! Will you ever get an Beast of the Mesozoic ceratopsians or raptors?
I messed up my spelling lol
Thank you!
I actually have ordered some but there are so many good reviews out there already that I have nothing to value add by doing my own. However, I have a couple coming, and I might do one or both because I have something to say about them! 😁
My favourite toy and animal in the hole wide world is that basilosaurus
It's an amazing animal rendered in an amazing model!
Just got mine... it’s a beautiful sculpt but the paint application on mine is considerably much more poorly done. Oh well, prehistoric mammals are hard to come by, so I will definitely still treasure it and overlook it the poor application of paint
I'm sorry to hear that, but it's unfortunately a very common situation. First few runs will always have better colour apps, and then subsequent runs poorer. So it always pays to get these early if you can.
When Mammals rule the sea just right after the Marine Reptiles disappeared.
Haha exactly! Basilosaurus took over Mosasaurus in the rulership of the Tethys!
@@DinosDragons Don't forget Basilosaurus was from North Africa and Mosasaurus was from North America.
is it really that light and hollow? i really like the sculpt and design but really like fuller heftier figures
It is. During this time, PNSO was making these large hollow PVC models. I actually wish they would do this again, or I don't see how we'll ever get 1:35 sauropods from them!
@@DinosDragons I just received the Vinyl PNSO Megalodon and Basilosaurus and i must say the basilosaurs was light but not as light as I was expecting and I was lucky enough to get a perfect model with the seam lines barely noticeable, the mouth very well detailed and the eyes fully painted! along with great gloss work to the whole figure! The meg was actually lighter than the basilosaurus and both are very large nice figures! I really hope that PNSO makes figures like this in the future as the detail, size and dynamic poses they did with these figures is absolutely breath taking! Perhaps PNSO will release a hollow vinyl prognathodon or dreadnoughtus in the 1/35 scale in the future! Also your reviews of these models are great I really appreciate the scientific explanations of the species keep it up!
What is the difference of the 2016er Basilosaurus to the newer one? Color... box design?
Which newer one did you mean?
Paraceratherium from I-Toy next.
Haha I have done that! And completely forgot about it while filming this video. Check this out:

I'm sorry if I'm late😅 I received mine today and made a review it's 2 mins long and my YT channel already has 259 subs
Weird I went to have a quick look. Your video channels shows that you have no videos from what I can see.
The skull looks kinda shrink-wrapped, no? Why wouldn't it look more like an orca, seeing that their skull shapes are kinda similar?
Perhaps. I have to admit I know even less about prehistoric mammals than I do dinosaurs. It didn't jump out at me! 😁
@@DinosDragons hey I don't know much either. Thats why I was wondering :)
In fact, I wonder about a lot of extinct animals... something just tells me that there's always more flesh than what's being portrayed... sadly, we'll probably never know for sure.
Yes, head is too skinny. It wouldn't have been like that in real life. For example, Recur's basilosaurus is more accurate.
