The whole concept behind the Il-86 was brilliant. A wide-body jet that could land on even the most primitive runways, with no need for a jet-bridge, and with full access to the cargo hold from the passenger cabin. What kept the Il-86 from becoming more popular were those ridiculously underpowered engines. The Il-96 got the power that the Il-86 needed, but lacked everything else that made the Il-86 unique. I understand why many people miss them.
Very high consumption too. They say that they will re-engine the Il-96 with a derivate from the new PD-14, even if four engine jets are not appealing anymore
+493ziggy nah. it was a shitty machine, the whole project was a total failure, and the good safety record is just a combination of low number of machines made and pure luck.
493ziggy ok I admit I didn't have to bash it like this. But it wasn't really a big success. The project struggled hard because of too weak and inefficient engines (as this video and many others document), there were just about 100 built, and these served almost solely in former soviet union countries. Hardly a successful project..

I flew in Aeroflot TU-154s several times in 1986, including Moscow-Samarkand, Tashkent-Almaty, and Almaty-Leningrad (as it was then known), and experienced similar low-power, low-lift take-offs all the time. Their landing strategy is exactly the reverse: full flaps at 30,000 feet.
