    The whole concept behind the Il-86 was brilliant. A wide-body jet that could land on even the most primitive runways, with no need for a jet-bridge, and with full access to the cargo hold from the passenger cabin. What kept the Il-86 from becoming more popular were those ridiculously underpowered engines. The Il-96 got the power that the Il-86 needed, but lacked everything else that made the Il-86 unique. I understand why many people miss them.

      @rougemont8116 Před 8 lety +10

      Very high consumption too. They say that they will re-engine the Il-96 with a derivate from the new PD-14, even if four engine jets are not appealing anymore

      +493ziggy nah. it was a shitty machine, the whole project was a total failure, and the good safety record is just a combination of low number of machines made and pure luck.

    • @pepa007
      @pepa007 Před 8 lety +10

      493ziggy ok I admit I didn't have to bash it like this. But it wasn't really a big success. The project struggled hard because of too weak and inefficient engines (as this video and many others document), there were just about 100 built, and these served almost solely in former soviet union countries. Hardly a successful project..

    I flew in Aeroflot TU-154s several times in 1986, including Moscow-Samarkand, Tashkent-Almaty, and Almaty-Leningrad (as it was then known), and experienced similar low-power, low-lift take-offs all the time. Their landing strategy is exactly the reverse: full flaps at 30,000 feet.

    So that's the plane I was on. I flew Delhi to Moscow in one of those in 1990s. We landed in some "stan" on the way. Take off was terrifying. It just never seemed to get up to any reasonable speed. Then it eventually lifted off and flew right over the 2 storey rooftops. And, yes, interior was interesting. You could walk downstairs to a luggage area. Everyone on board was drunk on vodka. Pilot had an enormous belly.

    In 1998 I boarded an Il86 from Novossibirsk to Moscow.....Very astonishing : we enter from the cargo bay where we put our hand luggage on open racks, then we climb a stair to the cabin with an absolutely round shaped ceiling with no overhead luggage racks....then we discover that all the toilets are in the back of the cabin ( may be 10 or 12 toilets )
    Take off appeared to be long with seemingly underpowered engines...During the flight the engines were balancing a little...Nothing special during landing and I am still alive....Better than Boeing 727 Max !

MTOW on Il-86 is 215 tons,and 204 tons on the 767... and still the takeoff run on the 767-400ER is longer at MTOW than Il-86... it is not underpowered... if it was,it would NOT have been certified for commersial traffic...Il-86 have landed on airports all over the world,so it have been through the same tests as any other plane...

      The IL-86 is one of the safest planes ever made, it never had a fatal accident in 30 years of service.

      @@donspecter Yup, you are correct! Apparently it had a good safety record after all.
      I do recall the plane I flew from Guangzhou in the '90s as being a good looking ship, but filthy, rattly, extremely noisy...and flown by a couple Russians that looked like they'd been in the bar all night. We even had sheep aboard, in the passenger area! I was counting my rosary beads (figuratively) for the entire trip and thinking about other career choices!

    Not always, the Il-96 (really a re-engined Il-86, with a more efficient wing and new avionics), and some other new ones use the high bypass turbofans.

    A CLOSE CALL, COMRADE, I think that both pilots "puckered up" and passed wind simultaneously in order to get that 2 extra pounds of thrust to get airborne;-)))
