    I felt very similarly about The Rest of Us Just Live Here (and I reviewed it). I agree, the premise was so much stronger than the execution. I wanted so much to love it, but I just couldn't quite get there.
    I also have Between Shades of Grey sitting in my TBR pile for going on 3 years...I really need to read it. AND I really need to read The Name of the Wind...everyone keeps telling me how amazing it is. I should just listen and read it!

    I read Between Shades of Grey this summer, and the first thing I thought of after I had finished was "I wonder if Regan has read this". I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I've heard you talk about The Name of the Wind before and never really took an interest to it, but you intrigued me (as usual) and it's the newest edition on my wishlist!

  • @lotus1186
    @lotus1186 Před 8 lety +14

    I've never read or watched Harry Potter (I know ugh I'm fixing this next year) but I still really, really enjoyed Carry On so nope, I don't think it relies on Harry Potter as much. I think it's more of how it plays on the Chosen One trope which is really the way Rainbow Rowell wrote it. But overall, I think Carry On can stand alone and a separate book from Harry Potter.

    • @dudacarneiro1228
      @dudacarneiro1228 Před 8 lety +2

      Exactly what I thought! I have read HP and Carry On does have a lot of "inside jokes", but it is a book based on HP, so it was supposed to have that feel of "I've seen this before"! But I did not feel like you would have to have any knowledge on HP to understand the story, Rainbow Rowell did a great job on explaining ~the past~ of the book to get us where we picked up from.

    • @marcelovsborges
      @marcelovsborges Před 8 lety +3

      I've never read Harry Potter and I can't recall what I watched from the movies because it really didn't haunted me down. I feel like misplaced. People keep telling me that I need to read Harry Potter in order to get Carry On, but I truly believe, at least from what I've heard about this book, that it can stand alone, even if it is made to pump up a nostalgic feeling inside Harry Potter's craziest fans.

    • @story.struck
      @story.struck Před 8 lety +2

      +Duda Carneiro I completely agree! I'm a massive Harry Potter fan which is part of what attracted me to Carry On but I definitely wouldn't say you need to have read that series to enjoy this novel. Besides, there are plenty of other books out there that are clearly inspired by HP that haven't interested me. The thing about Carry On that I really loved is that the Chosen One isn't straight and how it ties our world with the magical one so seamlessly. So don't worry if you've never read HP or you just couldn't get into it - you can still enjoy Carry On!

    • @TheLuluTrue
      @TheLuluTrue Před 8 lety +1

      +Randomandlovely I totally agree with you! In Fangirl, it seemed like the Simon Snow books basically were Harry Potter, until they were compared to HP at that one point. But reading Carry On, the differences to Harry Potter really stick out! The way magic works and how they all use modern technology makes the world unique and sets the universes apart quite clearly, I think.

  • @padfootangus
    @padfootangus Před 8 lety +7

    Something about Carry On rubbed me wrong while I was reading it and I ended up putting it down. I think you were spot on. It relies on HP too much and I think I'm too much of a Harry Potter snob to enjoy it.

    • @KatTheBooknerd
      @KatTheBooknerd Před 8 lety +2

      +Jessyca Z I was the same way. It wasn't just that it was like HP though, I just found it slow as well. There wasn't much...to it. It just seemed to be Simon endlessly complaining about Baz missing like okay we get it! lol So I couldn't really get further than half way. sigh

    • @padfootangus
      @padfootangus Před 8 lety +1

      KatTheBooknerd I felt bad because so many people LOVED it, so i'm glad I'm not alone! haha

    • @a.m.p.m.965
      @a.m.p.m.965 Před 8 lety +1

      +Jessyca Z Ditto, it rubbed me the wrong way, although I was totally up for the Harry Potter riffing. However, the poor use of British really irritated me. I lived there for 4 years and my husband is English, so I feel like I am pretty familiar with the culture. There were so many instances that just seemed poorly researched. Like, British school is out for 6 weeks in the summer, not 3 months. And they use the word "cab" rather than 'taxi.' They don't make cookies at Christmas, it's all about mince pies and other Victorian-style desserts. There were enough mistakes to jar me out of the story, and made the other British-ish parts feel like they had been forced in to show 'this is the UK.' I just never bought the world or characters as British, so it was hard for me to get pulled into the story.
      I just saw School Library Journal named "Carry On" one of their best of 2015, and I was feeling very alone in my lack of connection with the story--glad to see I'm not the only one! :)

      +Jessyca Z So even if this rubbed you the wrong way, would you recommend her other books? I'm on the fence about Carry On. You either love it or hate it from what I can see. So, I thought I'd maybe try a different book.

    when i first picked up Carry On i couldn't get into it because i felt like it was a parody and kept comparing the characters to harry potter characters which was distracting, and it was still only a fan fiction written by cath and not what actually would have happened in the real 7th book which made me feel like i was reading a fake book. BUT Rainbow Rowell has such a beautiful way of writing that eventually made me shut my mind and just enjoy it.

  • @juliananino2000
    @juliananino2000 Před 8 lety

    The thing about Carry On is that 1) It's not supposed to be the last installment in the fictional Simon Snow series, it's supposed to be the fan fiction Cath from Fangirl wrote based on the fictional Simon Snow series and 2) Rainbow Rowell is aware of what she did. She knows of the similarities between Simon Snow and Harry Potter and she never planned on making a book on Simon Snow. I think anyone who understands this finds that they will enjoy Carry On for what it is...

    I read Between Shades of Grey last year I think and I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it and well, it broke me, too. It was, as you say, heartbreaking. sigh

    The plot of "The Rest of Us Just Live Here" seems so so sooo interesting!! But, I've never read any of Patrick Ness's writings so I feel like it wouldn't be very well executed like you said but it sounds so cool!
    Name of the Wind seems so good! And the rating is just ggreat so I think I'm going to try to pick it up in 2016 :D

      I actually have read the first couple of chapters of The Rest of Us Just Live Here, and it was REALLY confusing and weird. I agree with Reagan, the premise hooked me, but the actual writing & plot was boring. I wouldn't really recommend it, but some people have enjoyed it, so... I just wanted to share that with you, in case you were thinking about picking up the book. :)

      +Bibliosaurusrex I loved The Rest of Us. The characters were really compelling and they all felt so real. And it was hilarious. I would completely recommend it. I don't think the premise was stronger than the story at all.

    Have you hear about Polish people being sent to Siberia from the time Poland got sucked in by Russia Prussia and Austria? People wanted to fight for their freedom but all the uprisings failed and many people were sent to Siberia. Then it continued and also happened during WWII, in fact many people didn't come back, they still live there. I also met people who were born there already. I recommend you checking out Polish history in that topic
