Grid Waves

- Slow down and take the time to survey your environment. On a glance there’s nothing unusual here, or is there?! Look east across Portersville Bay and it’s just tiny waves. At my feet you see sea shells at the sea shore.
Coden, Alabama on a quiet summer day, just watching the waves, but look a little more closely. They are coming in from one direction on that side, from the other side they are coming in from the other direction. Where they meet, they form a perfect grid. Those are called grid waves.
Off of Coden Belt Road, it’s all about the shape of the land beneath the water- that’s called bathymetry. When you look farther out, you might notice what seems to be a sand bar going away from the coast. It seems to be acting like a natural barrier to focus the wave movement. The waves arrive from two different directions in the shallow water at the sand bar. Of course, the waves are generated by wind so that plays a role too.
Stop and look and you might be amazed. It’s simple symmetry. Sometimes you just have to… get off the grid!
Alan Sealls, News 5.
Growing up in Hawaii, we were always taught to keep an eye out for the "squares". The grid can pull you back and fourth for hundreds of feet and make it hard to stay calm.. I'm shidding and farding just thinking about it 🤫

Since the square waves are made from two waves intersecting I would assume that two rip currents will pull you in opposite ways, zigzagging you further away from the shore, thus making it impossible for you to escape as where the normal currents drag you straight so you can swim aside..
Damnnn
As rare and exciting as a square wave is, they are also very dangerous. They cause powerful riptides that prove very difficult to get out of for people and even ships. With waves that can reach over 10 feet in the air, they are believed to be the cause of many shipwrecks and boating accidents.
So, you’re on the right track. Except, riptides are much stronger than rip currents, typically. It’s not about the distance you’re dragged out. It’s the fact you’re going under and staying under - while being dragged out to sea.

Grid waves are dangerous because when they intersect they create a rip current stronger than normal rip currents and waves the average person may experience and you most likely will not get out of it. For all those not knowing why theyre so dangerous. If youre in the water and they start to happen you should reslly get out quick. Luckily they rarely ever happen anywhere aside feom the island of Rhe in france, and theyre very large there, these are tiny and cool that theyve happened somewhere else but its probably only due to the sandbar
most people call them square waves instead and i can tell the person who made this documentary thing didnt know what they were talking about because they are so dangerous and he didnt explain anything about them besides looks. so this comment will help a lot of people because they shoudld be informed to get the fuck out of the water

These are dangerous
There is an island called Re. With a lighthouse on it, and on a larger save these waves are very cry dangerous. Being as this occurring down here, I think you should make another news story a bit more informative about it.. there is a facebook page called WTvideo I read an article on, which I then google grid waves, and came across your video, and the article was a bit more informative... I think the dangers need to be mentioned... being as the sight is so captivating to tourists.
Why is it dangerous I'm just asking
@@filmingstudios453 strong underwater rip currents.
It’s rhe
It’s dangerous bc those waves can pull u in and u may not be able to get out
The ones you talk about are called Square Waves. They only appear at the island of Rhe
Thank you! Bright side gave a very unhelpful explanation.
This on a big scale would be so scary. You would constantly get dragged and hit from both sides of the waves.
Personally I would love to get my feet into or sit between the shallow tiny cross waves to feel the current, and getting the picture of how intimidating the large ones can be.
We had these tiny grid waves all the time where I grew up. We would stand there in the shallow water, maybe a foot deep, and the water was just angrily swirling around your legs. The water looked calm from a distance, but up close it was turbulent. If you stood still, you could feel the sand literally getting pulled out from under your feet. Normally when you stand still in shallow water, your feet eventually become buried in sand. But with the grid waves, the sand would come out from under you. It makes you feel dizzy, and the pull of the water going out to sea is so strong that it induces a mild feeling of panic, especially when you get knocked down. It's almost disorienting. And this was in not even knee deep water, where the grid waves were nothing more than large ripples.
Such dad energy
I wanna throw something in some square waves and see what happens

@@Tdotttttt lol why not?

I like this guy.
He doesn't give a fuck
Two rip currents pull you out to sea, impossible to escape. Next thing you know your getting pulled into deep sea
Seems like the waves are coming together at a right angle. Like they're perpendicular to each other. Amazing Subhaan Allah! I can see why they'd be dangerous as a rip current with great force quickly moves you away from shore. Makes sense considering these waves have come from far away without the aid of the wind. Enjoy from afar :)

They are dangerous because it creates dangerous currents that can damage ships
Yep the ships aren't designed to to handle waves in one direction not two
arent they dangerous to humans as well ?
Lazy Luke Gaming yes
I have spent all day trying to figure out exactly why I shouldn't swim in them. None of this clickbait crap tells me. It's all parroting itself, and I doubt any of the writers could tell me why they are dangerous. I could see it with a ship if you happened to cross the intersections (or they crossed you) you would roll, especially if they are large. Even then, most boats can handle being sideways to most waves without too much difficulty unless the waves are very large.

@@Tdotttttt Grid waves are riptides on steroids. And lots of them. They carry you very far from shore, leaving you to drown. You'll likely be all right when in very shallow water, but not out in the deep. They'll for sure be life-threatening then.

I'm going to swim in one...looks cool

When a cross sea blows, the water can be difficult to navigate for boaters, as well as swimmers. Part of the reason cross seas are so dangerous is that they generate powerful rip currents, and powerful waves, which can reach nearly 10 feet (3 meters) high, more than enough to swamp a large boat.
Dangerous af too
When you see these grid waves, you need to understand that it's very deadly dangerous. Why? Because the currents and rip tides underneath can pull you down and out and drown you.
rip tides don't pull you down. they just pull you a short distance away from shore.
