Grid Waves

  • Slow down and take the time to survey your environment. On a glance there’s nothing unusual here, or is there?! Look east across Portersville Bay and it’s just tiny waves. At my feet you see sea shells at the sea shore.
    Coden, Alabama on a quiet summer day, just watching the waves, but look a little more closely. They are coming in from one direction on that side, from the other side they are coming in from the other direction. Where they meet, they form a perfect grid. Those are called grid waves.
    Off of Coden Belt Road, it’s all about the shape of the land beneath the water- that’s called bathymetry. When you look farther out, you might notice what seems to be a sand bar going away from the coast. It seems to be acting like a natural barrier to focus the wave movement. The waves arrive from two different directions in the shallow water at the sand bar. Of course, the waves are generated by wind so that plays a role too.
    Stop and look and you might be amazed. It’s simple symmetry. Sometimes you just have to… get off the grid!
    Alan Sealls, News 5.

    Growing up in Hawaii, we were always taught to keep an eye out for the "squares". The grid can pull you back and fourth for hundreds of feet and make it hard to stay calm.. I'm shidding and farding just thinking about it 🤫

    Since the square waves are made from two waves intersecting I would assume that two rip currents will pull you in opposite ways, zigzagging you further away from the shore, thus making it impossible for you to escape as where the normal currents drag you straight so you can swim aside..

      As rare and exciting as a square wave is, they are also very dangerous. They cause powerful riptides that prove very difficult to get out of for people and even ships. With waves that can reach over 10 feet in the air, they are believed to be the cause of many shipwrecks and boating accidents.
      So, you’re on the right track. Except, riptides are much stronger than rip currents, typically. It’s not about the distance you’re dragged out. It’s the fact you’re going under and staying under - while being dragged out to sea.

    Grid waves are dangerous because when they intersect they create a rip current stronger than normal rip currents and waves the average person may experience and you most likely will not get out of it. For all those not knowing why theyre so dangerous. If youre in the water and they start to happen you should reslly get out quick. Luckily they rarely ever happen anywhere aside feom the island of Rhe in france, and theyre very large there, these are tiny and cool that theyve happened somewhere else but its probably only due to the sandbar

    There is an island called Re. With a lighthouse on it, and on a larger save these waves are very cry dangerous. Being as this occurring down here, I think you should make another news story a bit more informative about it.. there is a facebook page called WTvideo I read an article on, which I then google grid waves, and came across your video, and the article was a bit more informative... I think the dangers need to be mentioned... being as the sight is so captivating to tourists.

    • @AdelineCowgirl
      @AdelineCowgirl Před rokem

      We had these tiny grid waves all the time where I grew up. We would stand there in the shallow water, maybe a foot deep, and the water was just angrily swirling around your legs. The water looked calm from a distance, but up close it was turbulent. If you stood still, you could feel the sand literally getting pulled out from under your feet. Normally when you stand still in shallow water, your feet eventually become buried in sand. But with the grid waves, the sand would come out from under you. It makes you feel dizzy, and the pull of the water going out to sea is so strong that it induces a mild feeling of panic, especially when you get knocked down. It's almost disorienting. And this was in not even knee deep water, where the grid waves were nothing more than large ripples.

It's all parroting itself, and I doubt any of the writers could tell me why they are dangerous. I could see it with a ship if you happened to cross the intersections (or they crossed you) you would roll, especially if they are large. Even then, most boats can handle being sideways to most waves without too much difficulty unless the waves are very large.
