Profound autism debate

Instead of a new 60 Second Science video this week, Andrew wanted to shed some light on the recent debate surrounding the term 'profound autism'.

It's my strong belief that "profound autism" is more a conflation of Autism and Severe/Profound Intellectual Disability.

The intellectual disability might not necessarily be a separate co-occurring condition if it’s being caused by the same underlying etiology. For example, there are people who have Down syndrome without intellectual disability, but that doesn’t mean intellectual disability isn’t part of Down syndrome.
