  • One of the things that many users miss inside the current 1.7 Version of Affinity Designer is the Image to Vector Tracing Tool. Although it is not wise to have a blanket approach to every pixel bases image, It is a big help if you have a difined image, like a logo that you trying to trace and can do so with the help of software.
I have chosen to use a Free Opensource Online tool because of its accesibiity, simplicity and power. online-converting.com/

You also could have used the threshold to make two separate black and white bitmaps, one for each colour. Then you could convert each bitmap separately to vector and combine both vector graphics into a single one. Like this you wouldn't have to manually create a separation between the 2 colour parts.

You can do colour vector tracing in inkscape. It's free. Just select how many colour passes you want it to do and it adds them as new layers.
I also like inkscape's simplify feature. If there are too many nodes, it will smooth out the edges

I would duplicate this file into two files. Use threshold to make a file with only one color, and a different threshold setting on the duplicate to only see only the other color. Then autotrace each of the files, color/edit them as needed and recombine the vector versions into the original design. To me, this would be faster and not require re-editing shapes which might create unwanted changes from the original pixel-based design.

      Hi Elizabeth,
There are two ways of getting access too the node editing :
      1. Tap the letter "A" to flip between the tool you currently selected and the node tool.
      2. Click the node icon on tool bar usually under the move arrow. If you hover mouse over till icons you will see the context text show node. It's a little white arrow without a tail.
      Trust that helps
      Regards

Looks like onlineconverting.com no longer exists and there's no live trace feature in Affinity so now what do we do? Designer should have the ability to convert raster to vector in app Good as the Affinity apps are they'll never replace PS/IL until they can offer all the functionality the Adobe apps can.

No matter how talented you are, manually tracing a complex illlustration, line by line, is going to take a lot of work. You can use a third-party tool like Inkscape, but then why not use Inkscape for the rest of your workflow as well? A workaround that consists of "Use somebody else's software" is not a workaround; it's an admission that Affinity Designer can't perform the task.
