    Goldlewis Dickinson was released as the first DLC character in Guilty Gear Strive. While everyone has their eyes on characters like Nagoriyuki and Happy Chaos, could their be a couple of characters that are under the radar?     Just a side thought but the security meter isnt really a meter. If anything, its a cool down for better versions of a special move. So he has to wait to use the most powerful version of said moves instead of doing something to build that meter back quicker

    ArcSys has been having a problem with overcompensating the weaknesses of big bodies by giving them things that help with neutral too much and being absurd once they're in.

    Top tier down players. I think people get stuck in their thinking. Sol or May will always feel strong and Goldlewis will always be considered weaker just because the way they came out. Probably reinforced by out of date resources.

      He wasn't even that bad when he came out. People just judged him basically like you would judge Happy Chaos before Steady Aim pressure was found. People had no idea about 268H and were using 426H for plus frames instead

      @@NeoBoneGirl If you're talking about release Goldlewis, that was actually the strongest version of the character. He swiftly became considered mediocre after that because of system changes to FD and how it interacts with Guard Crush moves like Gaurda and Behemoth Typhoon.
      Release Goldlewis was even more exacerbated and extreme than his current design. FD didn't interact with Guard Crush _at all_ outside of removing chip and RISC, so he would *obliterate* your tension and be pushed back nowhere _on top of being even more plus._ In return, his defense was *worse* (6f 2P, old FD) than now.

    The thing with Goldlewis is that he only deals in absolutes. Any matchup in which he has trouble getting in is basically disadvantaged and any matchup in which he doesn't have that trouble is basically free.

      @@Sorioku RatingUpdate stats are, as have been said before, inflated. Several Goldlewis mains bloat the win rate to an absurd degree. Keep in mind Goldlewis is top 3 least popular characters online; these few mains *matter* as far as the stats come.

    All I’m gonna say is that I’ll still play Goldlewis even if he’s nerfed because his combo trees are a ton of fun. Behemoth Typhoon might be one of my favorite buttons ever put in a fighting game due to its versatility. It’s wonderful.

    personally, i wouldn't attribute goldlewis' strength to guard crush to the degree that you're claiming it is
    i think a lot of the situations where behemoth typhoon feels the worst to get hit by is when it's getting backed up by the drone and i think the drone is a very overloaded move in this patch

    For me the specific issue is that you can't YRC him on guard crush or if he has level 3 drone out. Makes fending him off a huge pain in the ass

      I wish they sidegraded the drone to move faster. Still good as an oki/corner and even better in neutral but actually allow yrc to work when on backfoot.

    The main thing that keeps me from rating GL higher is how many match ups his cons end up hurting him. Testament, Faust, and HC are downright brutal for him. Even compared to other characters with polarized spreads like Faust or Nago, his bad match ups are fairly frequent and can end a tournament run without a secondary. The top 5 are the main thing keeping him in check, where characters like Chipp and Baiken don’t struggle quite so hard.

      This is where I'm at, yeah. You can't be top tier in this game with the kind of truly *bad* matchups Goldlewis has when the real top tiers are all running 5:5's against the characters they complain about. I play Testament and like, Nago and Leo can both get arbiter jailed too but. They have way more options to get out than Goldlewis does.

      @@MMurine He has a good spread, but if you only look at HC/Ram/Leo/Nago (the confirmed top tiers), he doesn't have great tools for them, and those are the characters to be most worried about in a tournament. Faust, by comparison, does lose to HC and Ram, but has some chance vs Leo and actually beats Nago. Faust also dunks on GL himself as well as Baiken, with decent options for fighting Zato.
      This isn't to say that Faust is truly better than Goldlewis, but losing to most relevant characters holds GL back competitively compared to the other 5th place contenders.

    I agree with everything just want to point out that one of his main weaknesses is his lack of answers against 6p’s. The mid range is the sweet spot where you want to be fighting him. He has no buttons to challenge 6p reliably because they are either too slow or hit too high. His buttons also can get low profiled which means his neutral is quite under average compared to other characters. His saving grace is Drone. I feel like people aren’t abusing his weaknesses yet but we shall see.

      Disagree. The only button that a few characters can low profile is 5P. BT beats 6P and even j.D can sometimes beat it. Also just want to mention that his own 6P is on crack

      @@meleth2543 far slash gets low profiled as well. J.D CAN beat 6p but that’s 1 out of 7 times lol. If you stick at close to mid range he has no buttons to beat 6p’s and his behemoth lose to 6p’s if close enough. Most 6p’s are 12 frames startup and below. His low pokes either don’t have the range to compete or are too slow to compete. C. s 13f startup, 2.d 14f startup. Every buttons he has will lose to 6p at that range including behemoth because it starts up in 12 but requires a half circle to input compared to just pressing 6p. I’ve seen 6p’s beat his 2.k for crying out loud lol people have made videos about this for months but then again people don’t lab how to beat him so they keep crying.

    great video, great analysis but I don’t think you did enough justice to emphasizing how polarizing gl is. that’s fair because it’s very hard to understand how his struggle matchups (and there are actually more than any of the top tiers) feel without maining him. i’m a top gl player and i’ve never been one to downplay him, however I firmly believe he’s outside the top 5 (hc, nago, ram, zato, leo). even among those 5, the only one he does not at least somewhat lose to out of those is *debatably* ram and even that is hard. he also firmly loses to faust, chipp, test (maybe even an 8-2) and jacko. but like I said, he’s polarizing. he can certainly win given a handful of opportunities against any character whereas someone like nago gets a couple fukyos and a couple beyblades to beat hc or axl or zato. but again, on average he’s definitely losing to those characters. when he plays against pretty much anyone else though, he gets to run his game plan and can very easily steamroll even if on average those matchups should be “slightly” goldlewis favored. it’s very easy to focus on the extremes with lewis because of how hard he can win, but you need to think hard about his average performance and also talk a bit about his counterplay. despite having devastating offense, the difference between knowing his counterplay and not can easily make him appear top tier or not. and unfortunately many people are clueless about how to play against him, get steamrolled, then say the character is brainless and top tier.
    I would also like to disagree with the fact that he lacks results, if you keep up with the online scene we regularly have goldlewis (myself included) place 9th or better in stacked online brackets like 9moons or wnf. i’m sure you’d agree that wins aren’t everything

    With the way Strive is setup the meta is essentially around long as hell blockstrings and if you deal big chip damage. I really don't understand how ArcSys really being giving characters all these + on block moves that deal mad chip damage on top of the already high damage and the RISC mechanic. Look at the characters people are struggling with Happy Chaos, Nago, Ramlethal, and Goldlewis. It's not because they're getting perfect oki setups or mixing their shit they just dump absurd damage and pressure. Any character that doesn't do that has to pray that all their little pokes add up before they get hit once and then FORCED to Burst or Die. I really hate the damage meta in this game. Doesn't help so much stuff is naturally Burst safe just making every interaction a heavily one sided gamble.

      Yeah, a lot of the DLC characters have this problem. I'm totally down for their gameplans, but the way some of them are tuned feels too extreme. When the game first launched, they had a kit full of all minus on block stuff and like one plus frame move. Now that's inverted. The only gap I've found out of a decent Bridget's blockstring is to 6P rolling movement. Happy Chaos may be limited by concentration, but his bullets feel like a nearly inconsequential resource. Jack-O feels like she doesn't get punished enough for losing servants, like Zato would.

      fun fact: the guard crush FD changes were supposedly aimed at pot's garuda but he can just kara cancel into it so it doesnt really matter XD

    I like the idea of security gauge being something that becomes more of a present threat as time passes, but as it stands, GL jumps at you twice, gets 6p'd each time(or not if you can't), does drone, and then holds forward into BT pressure. Before people cite characters that get good reward off their 6p, these are either characters he can contest in neutral and actually use his mondo buttons, or flat out loses to. That list seems p short to me (seems like Zato, HC, maybe Axl, maybe Nago? Sajam seems p keen on the Nago matchup this patch so am unsure), especially in this patch, and I'm not sure how to address security gauge.
    Personally, I'd love his j.d getting gutted, but I understand arcsys doesn't really balance that way, and that might be overkill for him, but gauge has either been a non-factor or meme into win con. Curious what other folks think, since I mostly fight him as Zato and while the matchup feels fairly free, it mostly just boils down to whoever wins round start ~85% of the time, though Zato does have notably strong buttons to interrupt BT pressure, even if he does die in one interaction.

      Making the drone move faster is my proposal. It's a buff in that it's a better counterzoning tool, but instead of matching GL's dash speed it outpaces him so he doesn't get a pseudo wall/armor as he blindly dashes behind it. Secondly, it enables YRC to work since the drone will clear the vicinity by the time the bubble clears. So it's a slight nerf in approach and pressure
      I dunno how to make the skyfish appealing if the drone becomes this good though.

    Goldlewis is so fun. You can take a beating and make mistakes the whole match but if you catch your opponent slipping you can just shift the momentum with a single BT, drone or super. Then bully them with guard crush and solid mix.

    I think you're ignoring one of the most important elements that prevents Goldlewis from being top tier. One, his offense can be absolutely neutered if your opponent knows how to play around it. Being able to aptly use FD and backdash forces you into strings that are significantly less effective for offense and don't really allow you to take advantage of his pressure, putting you back into a neutral position where you're at a disadvantage.
    Two, his matchup spread is rough. Testament, Nago, Ram, HC, Axl can all be absolutely brutal matchups for Goldlewis. Yeah, if you get them in the corner you get your win condition, but they have better neutral and if they get you in the corner you're just as done.

      @@LordKnightfgc It's not as bad as it used to be, and Axl being low damage means Goldlewis can take more risks and turn the game around, which he's good at.
      But if he gets you cornered and playing his game it can be absolutely brutal for Goldlewis to fight his way out. I mean even Gobou switched to Zato of all characters against Axl in the REV major. It can still be a rough matchup.
      And his other poor matchups only get worse.

      I wouldn't include Ram on this list (I'd sub her out for Chipp and Jack-O), but the thing that GL's tough matchups all have in common is that they have better roundstart RPS than he does. And in Axl and Jack-O's case, the roundstart RPS is pretty even, but the pushback on success is SEVERE. Same for Testament, except they also have a better roundstart than GL. That being said, though I've historically struggled in the Axl matchup, I may have just cracked it finally. And other Goldlewis players tell me that the Axl matchup is either even or favorable for Goldlewis.

I mean I feel that sentiment that Axl is favorable, since staying in on him is so much more managable now and his low damage lets you take risks, but he still absolutely owns the neutral game against GL. Even Gobou switches to Zato, possibly the only other character with a worse Axl matchup, rather than try and play GL against Axl in tournament. I think Goldlewis players just learned the matchup well enough that now that they have any options it feels like its favored. But that could just be me.
      I agree with you that roundstart dictates so much of the pace of the match and influences his bad matchups. Also agree that Jack-O is pretty rough, but she honestly slipped my mind since I see so little of her.
      GL is really strong now, but having played him since day 1 and dealing with him being "low tier" for so long it's frustrating how quickly people went from "your character is bad and you should feel bad" to "GG you won character select". Particularly when you absolutely need a pocket character if you want to make competitive tournament runs.

    Is just me or is every character in this game who has a resource other than bar broken as hell? I just dont understand why they give these characters kits that are good outside of their resource use rather than forcing them to actually use it to do anything decent. Happy chaos, nago, even gold lewis, etc... are good characters without their special resources and they still have access to bar like the rest of the cast, with supers and specials that let them loop their busted resource while building even more bar. Honestly they should either have no access to standard meter and rely solely on their resource or their options for recovering the resource significantly reduced and made very unsafe. Supers you can combo into after using all your resources to string together an insane, basically unlockable, 15sec series of uninterruptable offense, into big damage that resets your resource and builds you meter, is flipping dumb beyond belief. I love this game but the top characters are killing any enjoyment im having because of how stupidly broken they are compared to the rest of the cast.

      @@real765rp8 are you kidding me? its what he spends to special to special cancel what are arguably the best specials in the game, without it he doesnt get that. But by your logic any kind of bar/resource is mostly a "limiting factor."

      @@radfield6089 well it's just what he spends to do specials. Not explicitly to do special to special cancels. I'm not trying to kid you. But special to special cancels is technically an ability that isn't tied to the bar. Unlike xrd sin, where a special to special cancel costs more resources, nago always pays the same amount for using a special regardless of cancels. It's just that every special move is tied to it. So without the bar, nago would be able to spam specials all day.

    let's look to real top tiers - hc, nago, zato, ram
    unlike GL they have fullscreen conversions and safe neutral game - while fat dude need to risk his ass. yeah in a close range he can obliterate his opponent, but he needs to get there.
    and one more issue - his stuff sealed behind stupid BT with up direction inputs which even top GL fails some time and loose games cuz of it. Can you imagine nago who fails to input smash his full-screen disjointed normals? or hc who fails to input HS button to shot you to death?
    that's why GL is never top-tier

    I've been saying he's been good since he came out since he's the only character with actual GG offense but people were out here listening to known big body downplayers before they even figured out to use 268H smh smh
    also I gotta call out LK for using Millia as an example of a character who isn't traditionally rewarded for her pokes bc she gets a safe confirmable KD combo off of fS in Xrd lol

      No, he was not good on release. Absolutely no mash options, no ways to handle zoning on reaction, no counter poke option at all. People conveniently forget that there was a patch to make him borderline playable and his most awful matchup nerfed to make him not be braindead counterpicked. You have very poor memory if you thought on-release Goldlewis was anything but barely over Anji and Faust.

      @@HellecticMojo His offense was arguably the strongest in the game because the FD changes weren't implemented yet. If people had the knowledge of the characters pressure and knockdowns that they did now he would be considered mid tier at worse. He just needs a single opening and then he mauls you even harder than he does now because FD does nothing but stop the chip and risc crank. His neutral is also far better than Potemkin because he has fS 684H into immediate win condition from his longest poke, which Potemkin does not have. Behemoths are already god counterpokes on their own anyway, and they haven't been changed at all to my knowledge. Sorry, but you have been tricked by the Goldlewis downplay squad

      She didn't have that for years and it's crouching only or 50 meter, AC prob would be a better example because of Longinus, but overall she isn't good at confirming far grounded hits.

    I really like goldlewis , but i have to agree with LK here, like him traps you in the corner with guard crush and dealing mad shipp damage with limited options to answer is fucked up .

    Goldlewis is def not top 6ish, cant believe ur leaning toward that lane as well 🙄. I feel like he'll only be top 10 at best because of his moveset. He has the hardest moveset, cant nerf a character's moveset🤷🏽‍♂️. If they ever made his specials quarter circle inputs he'd def be top 5 and banned from tournaments lol.

      @@rhabsamsam well you try inputing consecutive half circles flawlessly. I even see people in tournaments misinput with goldlewis. Do u realize how hard it is to do a non buffered 4/8/6 with goldlewis? Thats probably the hardest move to do in the game.

I still see high level goldlewis players occasionally buffer that input, as well as 6/8/4. Gobou also distanced himself from those 2 raw behemoths because its hard to be consistently good at those moves. The only special harder thsn that is maybe kara potempkin buster.

    Goldlewis is problematic for the simple fact that he's the only character out of the entire cast that can win off of a BLUE burst. He WANTS to get hit while he has lvl 3 security so he can send your ass to the other side of the screen so he can skip neutral and begin Guard Breaking you. He is the pure embodiment of everything wrong with modern fighting games.

      @@HellecticMojo 100% Tension can either buff your pressure or your neutral depending on the character's toolset.
      Because of the positional advantage of a Gold Burst + his metered options complimenting his already good pressure rather than enabling it, HC's Gold Burst let's him do both.
