How to Mix Traditional and Modern Decor with Freeman’s

Continuing Freeman’s private collections initiative, the forthcoming British & European Furniture & Decorative Arts sale includes large sequence selections from six fine estates, presenting a strong and varied core of fresh-to-market and accessibly priced pieces for collectors both seasoned and new.
Fine sections of 17th to 19th century European furniture will be found from the Cappelari Estate, the Estate of Simone Ziegler, and the Collection of James A. McGirr and Dr. Charles Lothridge.
Highlights include a pair of Louis XIV Style Bibliotheques (Lot 156) a Louis XVI ormolu and patinated bronze clock by Robert Osmond and Joseph Tavernier (Lot 213). In addition, the sale highlights a panorama of pieces from various owners of works from the 17th through the 20th centuries, including a fine George II mirror in the manner of Gumley & Moore (Lot 300) and a signed majolica charger by Ulisse Cantagalli (lot 146). The sale concludes with a large and important collection of English Victorian majolica from the collection of Dr. and Mrs. Silby (Lots 353-413).
In addition, Freeman’s will also hold the Silver, Objets de Vertu & Russian Works of Art sale the same day. Noting the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, the sale opens with an exceptional group of pre-revolutionary Russian masterworks, including an Imperial presentation ring by Michael Perkhin for Faberge (Lot 21) an exceptional cloisonné enamel box by Feodor Ruckert (Lot 8) and a rare silver presentation cup in the form of a cockerel by Alexander Sokolov (Lot 9).
Wrapping up the Russian section are two important historical collections documenting the last days of the Russian Imperial Family at Ekaterinburg. Never before seen in the United States, The Lintern Archive (Lot 26) comprises a rare Romanov family photographic album, likely belonging to Pierre Gilliard, tutor to the Imperial children. The album contains 66 photographs, many never before seen, and is sold with an historical letter documenting early efforts to recover the remains of the Romanovs in the forests of Ekaterinburg.
The second collection, The Storojev Legacy, (Lot 27) comprises the theological library of Father Ivan Storojev, who was the officiate at the last religious services attended by the Imperial family. Pectoral and blessing crosses used at the final service are included in the collection, as well as heavily annotated missal recording Storojev’s involvement. The Romanov family is now sainted in the Orthodox Church.
The Silver section is noted for its breadth, featuring The Lonsdale Salver (Lot 46) attributed to Heming, as well as British works in silver by Hester Bateman, Paul Storr, Matthew Boulton, Ayme Videau and Garrard.
Exceptional American silver includes works by Tiffany & Co.-particularly a group of works in the ‘St. Dunstan’ pattern (Lot 79,Lot 80)-Gorham, Whiting Mfg. Co., Dominick & Haff and other makers from the early Georgian periods to the 20th century. European silver is also well-represented by works from the 18th through the 20th centuries with exceptional pieces by Odiot, Bucellatti, Christofle and a wonderful collection of early Georg Jensen (lots 101-125).
