Its crazy to me the amount of people who see Bozzio's huge kits and immediately form the assumption hes some sort of hack who is compensating. Hes a legendary drummer who is fulfilling that primal urge to get as many sounds as possible out of his kit. Im so glad somebody like him exists.
Any drummer knows the methods he's using and sits in awe at his range of skills and memory for extremely difficult pieces. It's only the fundamentally ignorant, to whom musical structure and methods are blissfully hidden behind their melodies and basic chord structures, that would criticize such a virtuoso in a crass way.
When I first saw him I had that kind of thought, but I can now see the man is using every piece to the fullest potential with musicality and expert technique and flow. Check out his all cymbal drum solo it will baffle you. His creativity is inspiring.
Tried so many times with him and I just can't get into him. I think it's the awful drum tunings and it all sounds like its leading nowhere, just having to go around everything on the kit. I'd love to hear what he can do on a nicely tuned 4 piece kit because I'm sure it would be impressive. People dont use all that stuff on their own kits purely because most of it sounds awful
These are super powers. I almost get unwell from the thrill and the excitement going on in my body watching this xD its so uncredible powerful what he does.
I'd never heard of Terry Bozio prior to his Missing Persons days. But at that time I saw him perform live. I've been an "in awe" fan ever since! This video proves he has always been a truly gifted natural who, unfortunately, has not been given the massive mainstream props he has always deserved!

We owe a whole lot more credit to Terry Bozzio than most people give him. Always a shame to see ignorant people in his videos clowning him for his massive set or something.
That's awesome. It seems like when terry was younger, His fills contained many notes. As he gets older, his notes start to contain fills. What's even cooler is that as his kit gets larger and larger, The notes he plays are further apart. Before he just wanted to play something cool and keep tempo, but now every single note he plays is intentional and comes with its own meaning.
I met bozzio in my youth, early 2000's and he was an absolute gent. He was touring with his giant DW set and he featured his solo record compositions. I was aware of him through Zappa only at that time and expected , foolishly, a regular clinic. Instead he played his drum compositions which after I bought all his solo records and then listened to countless hours. The person handling the records accidentally gave me a signed copy of one of bozzio's albums and I graciously, even in my youth, informed him of the mix up. The seller was grateful though I still wishing to this day I retrieved a bozzio signature. But then and still now, I couldn't not dishonestly and at the expense of someone who had sought it too but actually obtained it. My recalling all this is to illustrate my fondly remembering that particular bozzio performance. I got to quiz him on some things and he answered all my enquiries with enthusiasm. For example, he explained to me his approach to consistent sounding double strokes was from a timpini finger approach(German grip with the wrist executing the initial stroke and the snapping of the fingers to coax the near equal in dynamics second stroke). I asked him offering a then popular approach where the wrist would rotate to execute the second stroke along with the finger snap. He admitted not ascribing to this new approach, not because not wasn't functional but because what he developed was working for him. He gave me an insightful exchange when I was at that time asking anal retentive questions
My first exposure to Terry was Missing Persons. I've been a fan ever since. His work with Bozzio Levin Stevens is probably the style I most appreciate from him.
I believe bozzio was handed the black page and had it ready in a couple of weeks. Practiced it an hour or two a day. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Saw FZ in carbondale illinois with T Bozzio on drums (78, 79ish ,I have the ticket stub still somewhere) and they did a portion of the black page. Wow! If you have never seen the black page, look it up and you will see why it is called the black page.
Lucky man ! Did see him with Jeff Beck and Missing Persons. At the MP concert, I was leaning on the stage with my elbows propped. Can't do that anymore at a concert...actually it's been a long while since you could do that... :)
Have to say I was pretty ignorant about how great a drummer he is. I've always heard people mention his name and thought "you mean the guy from Missing Persons" and wondered if they were nuts. I didn't realize he played with Zappa and was this impressive.
If you really listen to Missing Persons you would be amazed. Watch the 1983 US Festival full concert and it's pretty impressive. I think some of the band's from the 80s who looked "weird" were musically underrated big time. I was just a teenager and was like "oh this is cool and I like it and the guitarist or drummer is hot". But now I recognize the insane talents they had. I wish I could go back.
First off, this Man is a Monster. Met him at a show, super nice and Gracious. His application of time, rudiments & melody is greater explored many years after this vid. I love the comments from so called drummers, stating that this is boring. It's only boring to someone that isn't listening. His phrasing, and application of at least 6 rudiments, at breakneck speed and execution, is what makes him the Star he is. And he continues to expand his boundaries. There are a gazillion videos of Terry’s hands. Go watch them. This video is cool and unique because instead you see the absolute ecstasy in his eyes. Not a grimace for 1,000,000 miles. Imagine what his fucking body feels like playing 4way singles in a Speedo? Or not.
Two of the greatest, most unique drummers in the last 50 years played with Zappa (bozzio and vinnie) then on top of that Ralph Humphrey, Chester Thompson, Aynsley Dunbar, and Chad Wackerman. Unreal.
