  • This is a 56 minutes bass fest!
You gotta see this if you are into some nasty funk bass playing!
One of the top players today, Chicago's own Ethan Farmer!
( Lionel Richie, Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson, Babyface, Patti LaBelle and many more)
MarloweDK caugth him in a session with Morten Ehlers from tc electronic and later on stage with Lionel Richie.
We had a blast together, Ethan playing a lot great stuff, while we talked about technique, practice, gigs, etc while Morten from tc electronic served wine:-)
    from http:www.playbassnow.com
You can read more about Ethans signature bass at www.bassmods.com and ethan-farmer.com/

This was a great interview. MarloweDK is a talented bass player and has great interviewing skills too. Musician interviewers ask the questions I'm more interested in. I'd like to see Marlowe interview Prince and Billy Cox.... I had never heard of Ethan Farmer, but this guy is a monster on the bass. All his grooves make you move. That impromptu outro was gorgeous. I can't believe it just came off the top of his head, but I guess when you've been playing since 5, it's more like talking, walking or singing, so he can do that. Hearing you guys talk about your influences at the beginning, I knew there was a reason I liked MarloweDK's flavor on the bass. There a lot of bass players/instructors on YT these days, but Marlowe (and Ethan) have that seasoning that's just right. Very cool.

I think the bassplayer with Prince who played almost exclusively with a pick might be Levi Seacer Jr., who's main instrument was mostly guitar. He was very, very funky. He played the bass like a rhythm guitar: strummin' all te stringes and muting the ones he did not need to hear. Just like Nile Rodgers plays all his parts.
Levi played bass on the Sign of the Times and Love Sexy tours in '87 - '89.
He played mostly Guild and Alembic (Spoiler) basses.

Thank you so much DK. It is very refreshing to hear 2 guys have a conversation about the bass world that is......correct. There are so many people out there with there own theories on how music works. To hear things like Nashville Number System and charts. It's reaffirming. I was around Nashville back in the early 90's, Urban Cowboy part II days, and I learned these things. Most local yocal musicians are just clueless when it comes to this level of the craft. And what's sad is you try to give them a little insight and they don't believe you. Sorry for ramblin. Thank you guys.

Ethan Farmer is a bad dude. And I agree with him about CBS-era Jazz basses: Those instruments have a uniquely beautiful tone quality because of an unforeseen quirk in their design. When Fender-CBS decided to move the bridge pickup back about a 1/4" so it would fit under the ashtray-shape bridge cover it changed the voice of the instrument when both pickups were turned up. Combined with the Ash body/Maple Neck, those late 60s-late 70s J Basses have a little more bite, more slice, more bite, more nasty nasal...more Funk. Perfect for the music.

in my opinion ... I think any jazz bass or jazz bass clone like a peavey millenium bxp etc. ... I think they sound best with both pickups at full volume and tone all the way up... on a jazz bass.. turn everything all the way up and you will have good pick tone, finger tone and slap tone... my peavey millenium is the same way.. both pickups to 10 and tone to 10 and you're off to the races.
My favorite bass on earth is a fender aerodyne jazz bass... the p bass pickup and jazz bridge pickup sound so damn good together its dumb!

I think his reasoning for old strings is that the music he plays requires more of a vintage funk sound and feel.
The "old P-bass sound".. Brand new nickel wound strings will cause to much fret buzz and take away from the "mute"
    factor..

The main take away for me is find your own voice. I never want to sound like someone else. Learn the song but add your own flavor without taking away from the song.
