Isnt Matt the Gutar Murphy great???? love his tone, clean and non problematic. He made it look like " you just pick up the guitar, strum the strings and there you go..."
I just got Memphis Slim's At the gate of horn and was blown away not only by Memphis but Matt 'Guitar' Murphy. Literally blown away on the first listen.
He played in battersea London in the mid 70 s he was was getting quite old but he put on a great show with just a drummer ,he signed an autograph for me and the S in slim was signed as a dollar sign ,,
I tell you what, I'm reading Keith Richards biography "Life", and I'm getting a serious education on the old blues masters, from this book. Memphis Slim is one of many amazing artists mentioned.
new orleans to Memphis to chicago to NY via a 2 week stopover in Detroit swampy latin and caribbean tinged polyrhythms cooked up in the church on long hot sunday afternoon in the holy roller gospel services, graciously allowed to exist by slaveowner/plantation owners .That's right folks, Black peoples wasn't allowed to play music when they was slaves. Think about that. The field hollers and chain gang choruses i guess came later, but supposedly, in Cleveland, MISSISSIPPI some old rich dude allowed his slaves to make music, and blues was born there, on his big ol farm Thanks Whitey. We couldn't a done with out you. :)
A great privilege and pleasure to play with Memphis Slim and Matt Murphy. 🎶🎶
I like Slim's knowing nod at the end. He knows he's just smashed it.
Good call. Memphis Slim KNEW he was great!
