Hey y'all, some lovely commenters have let me know that apparently you CAN shoot full sensor 4K 24p & 60p. I must have had my A1's super 35 crop mode set to auto. My bad, either way I'm sticking with the A7S3 :)
Hey Zack - Great video except for there is one error you mention, regarding 4K recording. I own both the A1 and A7sIII. It looks like you might have APS-C S35 Shooting set to Auto. If you have that set to off, you should be able to shoot 4K 24p and 60p and full frame and with NO crop. So yes...the A1 is basically an A7sIII with a 50mp sensor. This is one of the reasons, I believe Gerald Undone switched out his A7sIII's for A1's. I think he also mentioned that the 4K recording quality on the Sony A1 was more detailed and cleaner than the A7sIII. Which was another reason for this switch. If you still have the A1, give it a try, and I think you'll see 4K is not cropped anymore.
Thanks for this info, I was just about to change my mind from buying The A1 to buying the A7S iii because of the crop issue. I was saddened to know this but now you mentioned that the A1 does actually use the full sensor. So I’ll be sticking to buying the A1. Man I was heart broken as I was thinking “Why TF am I selling my GH5 with a metabones then???”. Thankfully to you clarifying its not the case :)
The A1 does full width full frame 4K 24 and 60p. I have used both of those quite a bit on my A1. My guess is that the ‘aps-c crop mode’ was set to ‘auto’ which for some reason crops to 1.5x even with some full frame lenses. The A1 is basically an A7siii with a 50 megapixel sensor!
I got the a7S3 in 2021; picked up 2 more a7S3 in 2022 and then picked up the a1 for the 30 fps RAW photos. I ended up not using the a1 for photos because the buffer slowed the camera to 10fps. Instead, I switched to 8k30fps at high shutter speed to get the same effect. The a1 is surprisingly really good and it can match the a7S3 up to 25600 ISO. Another reason I used the a1 for video was the ability to do 200% crop on the 8K30. This is because I film high school cross country on an ebike and can't do zoom control while riding the bike. Recently I needed a fourth camera and I debated about getting a second a1. In the end I got a fourth a7s3.
So if you only shoot 4K 120p 10 bit and need high resolution photos (me) the A1 is essentially perfect? I’m currently in the GH5/Lumix ecosystem as well! While the video is still doing great, new client work demands higher resolution photos however and the A1 seems to be the only camera I could use to deliver both 4K 120p video and high res photos on the same job. The A1 will match the a7S3 in video all the way to 25600 in image quality. And you can crop the 8K30 200% while still maintaining full 4K. One thing the a7S3 seems to do better is the depth of color when recording in S-I 4K vs the A1 in HS for 8k30fps.
I really enjoy and Like your channel Zach but there was way too much thats not revealed with these test. Like was the same lens used and was it a lens that can even resolve 50 mp? iso looked very different even the comparison shots looked different in focal length or distance. Just a bit hard to understand the comparison methods. Maybe it's just me and maybe i missed something. Anyway thanks Zach your channel and work is greatly appreciated, really.

I can confirm that with my Sony A1 as well. I have my crop mode set to manual, so when I shoot in 4K 24p and 60p, I do not experience a crop.
Great vid, I was amazed by the stills I got from my A7siii, and you can crop a bit just not loads. More than enough for my needs.

Both are great. I just with the A7s3 was a 24mp camera. Sometimes you want to take pictures and it's ohh. This isn't really a photo first camera.

Great video, how does the A1 compare to the SIII shooting video at 12,800 ISO? Do the larger pixels have an advantage when dual native ISO kicks in?
