How to draw a sheep and wool using charcoal on toned paper

  • In this video, I show how I draw this sheep using charcoal on toned paper. I apply the white charcoal initially and then the dark charcoal afterwards..building both up in layers using the blending stump before adding more on top. I show how I get the texture of the wool.
    I am working on a smaller 8x6 piece of paper for this drawing. At this size, less detail can be applied so the drawing will be more loose but with the impression of more detail..

    Amazing! I tried this and one of the thins I struggle with is determining the midtones. I can see the brighest brights and the darkest areas, but how can you tell which parts are the equivalent to the gray paper? I hope that makes sense.
