    The Jetboil gas canister are a tri-blend of fuel, other brands are usually a dual blend of fuel. The jetboil comes into its own at lower temperature ie under 3’c. Something to watch out for on those clear nights in the desert.
    Ps my Trangia and Esbit stove still going strong after 12 years.

  • @blacksheep6888
    @blacksheep6888 Před rokem +2

    My choice is Trangia, but always have some paper packed in-between the pots so they don't vibrate, I like Trangia because they are self contained and can be used even in a blizzard, my Trangia will use metho gas and solid fuel, as for fuel leaks from the burner, simply don't store fuel in it. Last trip I did from Tasmania to Birdsville I used it and my friend that had one of those gas burners things used mine as well because his was so impractical to use. Trangia kick the rear end of all those other toy ones. The burner in the orange box is what I converted to run in my Trangia, all I did was take the legs off and bolted it to a peace of aluminium plate that I drilled a hole in, it was cheep and works a treat. Your system takes up to much room, in my opinion, Trangia is fully self contained with everything you will need even in strong wind

    It looks like you could use the Jetboil to weld the hull of a ship on the high setting.

  • @tungstentwohundredandtwent7007

    One point to be aware of with Jetboil is the different taps on different models. The lower end models have a simple, unregulated tap, basically off or on, nothing in between, as you found in the clip. That’s fine for just boiling water or heating a packaged meal. However, if you want to carefully cook or simmer something you’ll need to go up a version or two to get the regulated tap which allows you to moderate the flame. Both excellent products, just a case of carefully buying what you really need.

    LOL I still got my original Jet Boil the first ones that came out that has built in igniter and it works fine, I also know that camping-outdoor door store sometimes sell jet boil style fuel canisters made by other brands for less money and they work just fine.
    They also make a coffee press for the jet boil systems as well as cookware but I just do instant coffee on the road.
    But its interesting that Jet Boil is also making tripod style stoves
    Funny in the 80's for camping I used fold up box thing stove that used a big can of Sterno and I still have it. 😆

  • @MalcolmoftheNorth
    @MalcolmoftheNorth Před rokem +1

    Lovely video Mark! It’s funny how people get all worked up over these things. And I agree with you, the simpler and easier a burner is to use, the better. And the adapters for the cheaper gas cans are available all over the internet these days, and in so many forms that there’s almost no reason to go with a system with the expensive cans. Now, I live in a place where we get those low temperatures in winter. And I go skiing. When it’s below about-5 C the gas burners become practically useless. But that’s for a completely different use. I run with a Primus Omnifuel in winter. A bit more faff. But it runs on any liquid fuel that is a petroleum derivative. (Alcohol will ruin the O-rings). I’ve run it on chainsaw 2-stroke mix, diesel, regular unleaded, but my favourite is "lamp oil", an extra refined paraffin that doesn’t smell. But that’s besides the point of this video.
    For motorcycling I run a Primus Express with an adapter like yours. It’s almost identical to yours. The point I’m trying to make in a very roundabout way, is that as with anything, the most sensible thing to do is to get gear that is suited for your situation and needs. I like to cook, even when in the field. So I could never be satisfied with a JetBoil. (I’ve tried, and it’s just not versatile enough. But hey, it’s in the name; JetBOIL. It’s sole purpose is to put as much energy into a pot in the shortest amount of time possible. So you can only boil with it. Not cook). So I choose something small, versatile for motorcycling. And for skiing and wintery outdoors stuff I use a liquid burner. The great thing about both systems is that I can use the same cookware for all of it. I just change out the burner. Sometimes I go out with other people. There might be a barbecue about. I can even use my regular cookware on that if need be. As long as the food turns out good, I’m not too fuzzy about the burner… (I love those old fashioned brass stoves though). But not for motorcycling.

      The Jetboil brand has a number of different models. Some, like the Flash, use a gas controller that is not regulated. These models are primarily used for boiling water quickly. I suspect the Jetboil unit you were demo'ing was of this type. Other Jetboil models, such as the Sumo and MiniMo, do have regulated gas controllers and they can be turned right down to be able to simmer. These don't boil water as quick as the Jetboil Flash, but they aren't slouches either.

Like Primus or MSR... they work perfectly in any condition also very cold or windy conditions. they can run on butan, whitespirit gas even airplanefuel. So nothing extra to carry with you I assume you have gas in your tank on the bike. But they are a little bit more technical hands on when you use them and since you had problem to even attach the foot on the gas canister it might not be for you? Yes it's expensive but a full pot boils in 100 seconds. The Jetboil gas is also not just gas but also works in high altitudes. If you just want a cuppa boil the water and pour it in the cup, boil a little extra and you have water left to rinse the cup afterwards and because of the fast boiling you need less gas.

Now my mate thinks it’s an old manual and unleaded petrol is much cleaner these days. As a biker you are always gonna have access to petrol, you need it for the bloody bike, and you might be in the middle of some Moroccan desert for days on end and your not gonna get a gas canister. Totally agree for the beginner/newbie to go with gas, but those travelling further afield on longer adventures petrol makes more sense as you’re always gonna have plenty.
