  • In this video we'll take a look at the HP-23A AC Power Supply,
    a high voltage power supply designed to power some of Heathkit's HW and SB series of tube-based amateur radio equipment.

    I'm looking at doing a similar restoration project. I have some decent electronics know-how but nothing close to your knowledge. Good idea to caution about the high voltage developed by this equipment as it can be really dangerous. I really appreciate you sharing your experiences with the Amateur Radio community to help keep this vintage technology alive. 73.

    When I ordered and put together my HW-101A in 1974, and being newly married, I didn't have the money to get HP-23, so I built my own version. Using a plate transformer from an old TV chassis, I put it together using a schematic and article from the 1968 ARRL handbook. It helped that I was working then at an electronics distributor, selling parts to TV and radio servicemen.
    Good video as always. 73 KM4JA

    Another terrific, quality video Jeff, preserving the history of Heath.

    Very Informative Jeff! A great example of a supply that uses voltage doublers to allow the transformer to be easier to manufacture and more reliable. It has only single higher current 266VAC medium voltage winding to produce the 800V. Diodes and caps are cheaper than HV Center Tapped transformers, by the early 1960's...

    I just purchased the HP-23 version to go with my HW-100. Both in great condition. Future restoration scheduled for later this year. Fun times to come.

    Just picked up one at a local second hand store. He had no idea what it was and made me a deal on it. My plan is to restore it and re-sell it.

    Nice video. Very informative, and a very interesting supply with no transistors or valves. I love it when caps have the cardboard tube covers, because then they are easy to re-stuff as you did. I might have used cheaper radial caps vs. axial caps in there, though. but I guess if you already had them...
    That HW-101 looks nice!

    Nice video. I just picked up a HP-23 that I am hoping to test HG-10 FO, and a Johnson Viking mobile unit with.
    However, I have to double check all the wiring on mine.

    I got a HP-23B with an HW-101 and HS-1681 speaker at a local Ham fest earlier this month. Only paid $125 for the entire setup. Still need a Mic though. The 23B was recapped when I got it. Works fine as does the HW-101

    Be careful with the one 125uf that's in series with the LV circuit off the transformer. It does NOT discharge! I got shocked off that one at a few hundred volts. Not fun! I got the shock from the ac switch while working inside the power supply. Always be careful where you touch when working on high voltage items.

    Good video. Where did you get the new AC line cord?

      +CameraNut1000 I think I picked it up at a local Lowes or Home Depot.

    No one been here for a few years, lol, it's now 2023 and I want to restore one ! I wish Jeff had put his callsign, I want to email him !! I want to ask why he specifically did not mention the SB-101, he went from SB-100 directly to SB-102 as radios that would use this supply. When I bought my relic, it had this amp, the HP23A. Maybe another passer-by will know ? My basic question is which voltage setting to use, the 250V or 300V setting ? (for my friend Joe, VE2CY).

    • @jefftranter
      @jefftranter  Před rokem

      Somehow I overlooked the SB-101, it was an oversight. For use with the SB-101, the HP-23A switch should be set to the 300V position.

    great video, thanks!... ?i can only find 47uf 450 volt caps and 100 uf 450 volt ele caps, will they be ok?

    • @jefftranter
      @jefftranter  Před 5 lety

      Values a little higher in value (47 for 40 uF) should be okay but I wouldn't use 100 in place of the 125 uF.
