- Chief Historian Garry Adelman gives a presentation on the history of the Revolutionary War in America.
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.
This is the type of stuff that should be on the history channel. But it’s only on CZcams. I’m liking his history lectures more than anything I find on the history channel or in history stuff itself

Americans learned war fighting in North America. So the American way of war has always emphasized logistics and using technology to make it easier in contrast to the Europeans who get obsessed with tactics. And small battles. Generals who fight like Europeans in North America such as Lee and the Confederate officer corps tended to lose...
As an American, and a Student of History, I truly appreciate all that the French and Spanish did in support of the Rebels. But, it is also clear that they did this mainly to defeat the British, rather than to support the Rebels. The French had spent many years fighting the British and even considered invading England, while the Spanish wanted to retake Gibraltar. The American Revolution was fortunately well timed to coincide with the French and Spanish Goals.
Yes, the French and the Spanish acted in their own interests, not some other country's (which would have been unthinkable).
@@firefly1375 It is certainly reasonable to act in one's own interests (it is typically the best reason), I simply think that point is often missed when Countries Act together. The American Revolution was a clear example of that.
This is the most important point about the revolution.People fail to realise that if it did not happen at this point, it would irrefutably never have happened, because only 2 decades later The British started the Industrial Revolution and had steam powered gunships for decades, before the French got them, followed by the German states followed by the US. Also, if this had happened and the US had lost, It's even more certain there would never have been another war of independence, because then the Brits would have been more covert about selling the skills and information developed around the Industrial Revolution
In our timeline other countries were able to get steam powered gunboats within a few decades, because consultations were made in London, Paris and the German states where this information was sold to foreign engineers and entrepreneur groups, for cash
*It's from this point of view that it should be easy to see why the idea of MANIFEST DESTINY developed, because it's not just, like we think, that it was because the colonists won the War of Independence, but also because they absolutely HAD to win it when they did!

I think it’s awesome he mentions ninety-six. My ancestor Captain James Butler Sr. was an officer of the force that laid siege to that district.

I needed something to listen to while I made breakfast today. This is fantastic. My next book to read is 1776 and this is a nice introduction (been a while since 3rd grade social studies)

Actually, the shot heard round the world was the shot fired in Concord, not in Lexington. Because in Lexington the colonials stood their ground but then were blown away, while in Concord the Americans fought back.
As a foreigner the year by year analysis with topographical maps and army movements really illuminated my knowledge of the revolutionary war. Before that I knew about Bunker hill, the Delaware crossing, Cornwallis southern campaign and so on but never in such a detail and in correct chronological order.
History is my passion, thanks for the upload. Great Lecture
Something like 3% actually fought for the Independence. We’ve 44 ancestors that participated, 2 of which were loyalists.

I believe it is in fact Brandywine for Howe was on the other side of Washington at Germantown!
@@charlesbenedict743 You are right about the troop positions being in the correct orientation relative to each other for the Brandywine battle. However, they are incorrectly located by being arranged around the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. If you look closely to the lower left of the word, "Cornwallis," you can very faintly make out the word, "Philadelphia."

I don't think it's appropriate to paint the various militia forces for the various states as "Americans" in 1775. They didn't have a national conception in that manner. Even the Continental army was composed of regiments from different states. We should endeavor to be specific and to reject modern patriotic fictions.

Before us India was run by people who fed off the pore, they weren't very nice. And had other countries trying to take India, France and the Dutch I think who were quite brutal. And we stopped a few silly customs like burning wives when the husband dies. We made a country out of them. They now have Democracy, and a whole country, on the world stage. What would they have been without us?
We ruled India with very few people there because most normal people wanted to live in a civilized world.

Edit: you guys at battlefield trust keep telling this lie about the experiment of people governing themselves. There were already other democracies in the world at that point. pretty old too.
USA is the first federal presidential republic. A unique form of democracy during its creation.

Not active but the Corsican Republic preceded the United States. It ended however with a French invasion in 1769. The American Sons of Liberty were inspired by Pasquale Paoli, a Corsican soldier & revolutionary who later served as president of the Republic. Paoli, Pennsylvania for example gets its name from a tavern named after him that was a meeting spot local Sons of Liberty men.

All of the Citizens were not in solidarity with this hostile takeover! Not all Loyalists left nor were they all found to be tarred and feathered! The Yanks Lost 1812 and was refurbished by The British economically and infrastructure!

The Second Amendment protects the First. Independence was won with guns, not just words.
They did this to defend their liberty, the first amendment didn't exist yet. And the spark that set off the fighting, was the British attempt to confiscate the Colonists arms. So you're statement is lacking in historical accuracy.
? You do know the Bill of Rights came later? Watch John Adams the HBO mini series if you want a feel for why the Revolutionary War was fought. Also read through the Federalist papers.

Amazing similarity between the American Revolutionary War, Americans w/ Britain and the war in Ukraine, Ukrainians w/ Russia, in as far as logistics & overall strategy. Amazing parallels, both are undeclared world wars. Russia & Britain both had/have logistics train problems - & unresolved.
