I mean, he was in it. That's my opinion of his performance. Shame because Sheen can act but here it didn't work. The way Lee was portrayed is a major a minus for me in an overall good picture. I dont exactly blame Sheen since he was working on an adapted screenplay of a historical fiction that tried to give him more character than original present in the book. But i do love the fact the Sheen got into the role and the history of the battle, Lee's character, and getting an understanding of his role in performing as Lee. Not a great depiction or performance but Sheen cared about the history and impact of the event which is a positive trade off overall.
You ruined it, Ramon. You portrayed Robert E. Lee like some wild eyed kook. I cringed every time you came on screen.
Copps Hill is also the spot from where the British Generals Howe, Clinton and Burgoyne watched the Battle of Bunker Hill unfold across the water in Charlestown.
not a fan....
This guy is so passionately great at his job. I would love to have this guide to go to Bull Run, Ft. Sumpter, Appomatox etc etc.
We should teach this in public school with American History and New Language Class "Southern Draw" We must maintain History to be Taught for All Time Until America is no more
If I'm not mistaken, Thomas Paine was an American citizen but he gave it up when he became a French citizen when he participated in the French Revolution.
Can't wait to travel to Shiloh next year for vacation for a week
Great series of videos for people of all stripes to learn! As a new reenactor I saw some of those that portray Berdan's Sharpshooters and all i heard waiting to get into battle as they entered was "GIVE EM HELL BERDAN!!!"
A terribly one sided American account. All Canadians and those Brits who care know the Americans did not win the War of 1812. Just saying!
Saving taxpayer money? You mean exploiting labor? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
There’s no way Ken Burns’ American Revolution will be anywhere near as good as his Civil War. He caught the woke mind virus.
Sheridan possibly drank ‘Old Overholt’ rye whisky, and we can see the results!
Fantastic
Whats the fife and drum song called in the bacground?
This isn't real history. This is canadian propaganda
It isn't true. It's nostalgia. The Trust should be embarrassed by the opening.
Fun fact: The term 'sideburns' comes from General Burnside's facial hair style.
FANTASTIC PRESENTATION TIM..
Watching “the Civil War” as a boy of 9, it awoke my mind and heart simultaneously to the affair of the mid 19th century and the largeness of it all. It blew me away. I’ve never been able to get enough of it. Even to this day. I love the topic. Thank you ABT. For all your work.
i was about that age when I first saw it, too. No one forced me because it was that transfixing. It seemed so absorbingly wonderful, but as the years go on I view it quite differently. But it is still one of the best documentary films ever made.
All those dead horses
The movie Gettysburg has become a July 4th tradition for me. As much as fireworks, bbqs, and parades.
My Great Great Grandfather fought in the 67th Indiana at Champion Hill.
"With me. Who will come with me!"-Richard Jordan as Lew Armistead
There is much controversy over the park and their Knowledge of trees. Has an expert took core samples of these trees? To confirm age? There are a lot of variations in tree size and age
So great to see him talking about this spectacular film. He portrayed Lee the best.
A brilliant interview! Garry was perfect allowed ‘Ramon’ to wax poetically of his experiences. Too many interviewers become enthralled with their own agenda. The capper was Garry doing a perfect segue to his role as preservationist asking Martin about the place and value of the Gettysburg Battlefield. I tested up a couple of times listening and watching such a marvelous editing of this interview. Wow! Experiences such as these continue to inspire and motivate my involvement in both preservation and my small part with an HO model of the Western and Atlantic RR, summer of 1863. Thank y’all for what you’ve done here and continue to do.
@Without tariffs;tax stop
I am the fellow on the horse (Relay) bringing the orders that the 2nd ME mutineers will be melded into the 20th. I was next to the camera during the filming of Jeff Daniel's speech, the reenactors sobbing during it is total BS. Though the 'experts' didn't explain why, the tiny tents were used for 'forced perspective'.
Garry was struck mute...amazingly so.
The commitment required to produce the film was nearly insurmountable. Every actor rose to the occasion. But it was the contribution of the thousands of re-enactors who participated that made the film become the classic that it is today.
Another magnificent series of videos. Living in London and understandably more informed on British military history and WW1/WW2, my previous knowledge of the Overland Campaign was at Ken Burns documentary level. The level of detail and clarity in these videos has improved my knowledge substantially. It’s invaluable to see the terrain, to understand what occurred. Compliments to Garry, Kris, Dan, Sarah, Chris, Andy and the other LBGs, for your excellence in delivering these videos. On this side of the pond, we have had some good presenters covering British and European military history, Richard Holmes (War Walks) and Michael Wood (In Search Of), to name a couple. In comparison, your team matches anything they have produced on the BBC. Keep saving those battlefields! Mick - London.
Lee was a cousin on my mothers side of the family. My great grandmother rode in a carriage with him as a little girl right before he died. His portrait hangs in my house. Proudly i might add.
"Smur-na"
Ken Burns depiction of the civil war is always biased toward the North. Martin Sheens depiction of Lee though seemed very realistic. Robert Duvall's portrayal of Lee in Gods and Generals is my favorite.
A very nice but brief explanation of the basics of Custer's Battalion's strung Out destruction. He had five Troop's and 260 men & Scout's that were annihilated by approximately 1200 to 1800 warrior's from 3-4 Native nation's on that Battlefield on June 25th 1876, one hundred & Forty Eight years ago. As the fellow said, from Last Stand Hill the unit's had been strung out & dispersed along the parallel ridge's running South Easterly down ward, another one going Northwesterly toward the Cemetery in the lower background area. Each Troop consisted of about Fifty men, who were then deployed in Skirmish line's facing the attacking Warriors. That were closing in on both flanks and from the front. The Natives stated that the entire engagement with Custer's Battalion. Lasted all of about 30-45 minutes once they had been turned at the River Bank alongside the Huge Village's that lined it's bank's four over Five Miles too the West. Well there is My own summation of Lt. Col. G A Custer's last position's on that Hot Bloody & humid late afternoon. Thanks for sharing & allowing us too rebuttal, and Comment back. Now May all the combatants RIP with Their given God. TKS. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🤞🤞🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸❔❓♥️♥️♥️🤔🤔🤔🪦🪦🦬🦬
What a fine interviewer you are sir! Mr. Martin Sheen seems to be a lovely, gentle and sincere human being. Thank you, I so enjoyed this. Greetings from England.
He was a bad choice to play Lee. Throughout the movie he had a scared or furtive look to his eyes , the opposite of lee. He looke foolish on the hours, bent over and bouncing. Lee was know for his posture on a horse.
Overall I thought he worked for me, I think there was a bewilderment and fear in him that felt natural with the dawning awareness that his luck had fled him, that his army was beginning to fail, yet realising that he had to commit or see his army fall apart. Lee was capable of great self-control, but even for him at times it fled him, such as his emotional distress over having to break his oath to the Union. I do agree that it's unfortunate that Sheen couldn't have the same mastery of a horse though! Interesting trying to think who would have been the best choice for Lee. It's not an easy casting call! Any thoughts? I'm going to be mulling it throughout the afternoon.
Gettysburg is one of my favorite movies. I have it on DVD. Mr. Sheen did a wonderful job in that movie!! Now I'll have to pull the DVD out and watch it again. Hopefully it's not worn out.....🤔
Illusive Man!
I just see Jed Bartlett who played Robert E Lee
Nice interview sir, I always thought Martin did a good job portraying General Lee. Although none of us ever saw or heard him in person I think he made me believe I was watching Robert E Lee.
Great interview! Gary never disappoints.
Thank you
One of the coolest places I’ve ever been. Highly recommend.
Martin Sheen is Brilliant.
Wow! Burns is doing the American Revolution!? Is that's even half what the Civil War was in the 90s, it will be HUGE!
