      He might actually have a shop of his own.
      We bought a used car for my son and the dealer (who also had a garage) said it had a 90 day warranty. So when the cat trouble code appeared we took it back. He hemmed and hawed around for a week, then finally said he'd install a bypass pipe for free if I bought the parts.

      @@dubious6718 but sometimes you hit that spot within the gearbox thast allows you to actually engage the wrong gear... which isn't bad necessarily.
      until you engage the clutch, too. some engines die, some engines refuse to be revved up that high and make you chew the steering wheel instead.

    When I was 16, I had a 62 Corvair 4 speed. I thought I was hot shit because I had a Sears Tachometer. I purposefully wound it out in 3rd gear and downshifted to 2nd to see how high the engine would rev. Instead of blowing up the engine, all the lining material came off the clutch disc. Had to call Dad to get towed home. Never did *that* again.

      At tech school, a kid inherited his grandads flawless Ford Taunus and installed a tachometer on it.
      He was the cool guy with a new gauge and revved the engine to see how high he could get, i don't know what he reached but the flywheel bolts gave in and he had no car. 😅

      Had a 1984 300D 4speed manual Mercedes Wagon long ago. It had incredible engine brakeing. Shifted into 1st at around 30kph on wet surface (with nobody around and let the clutch go.
      The rear wheels squeeked and skid over the asphalt and the car decellerated fast just like if you pull the handbrake in a normal car in that circumstances. Nothing broke, still i never tried that again.

      To be fair, it would only be surprising if it didn't. First vehicle of its kind for a relatively new company, that sold a bunch. Objectively speaking that is a recipe for seeing lots of issues in a short amount of time.
      edit: also to be fair, a lot of the time, the problem lies inbetween the drivers seat and the steering wheel, or yoke in this case.

    I had a squeak in the rear of a Jeep Patriot, the car had 275,000 miles on it. I bought it new and had long commute to and from work, then I retired. I noticed it getting louder so I spray lubed all the joints etc. on the rear bushings etc.. Still squeaking. A mechanic friend of mine got in back as I drove and he said it’s rear differential!! He found a used one ( 300.00) a new was I think like ( 3000.00) installed it. I got sixty more thousand miles on it and gave it away. Saw it the other day still going 👍

      Sort of. Like everywhere, there are "tiers" of customer.
      Mechanics make more money off the normal people who bring their vehicles in for normal maintenance and repairs than they do off weirdos who neglect maintenance or do stupid stuff and then decline repairs. The weirdos and paranoids also can take up more time arguing about each thing compared to regular customers who understand or at least trust the mechanics and pay what's needed.

    Friend drives an electric BMW...totally crapped out in the MIDDLE of morning rush hour one day. Couldn't have been more than 6 months old. Simply gave a message that said "Get Car Serviced". She was terrified as cars zoomed around her. Fortunately, a cop showed up and helped get the car towed and gave her a ride to work. But it's still unnerving when, unlike a gas car that usually gives some sort of warning...your car just stops being a car.

      For newer cars, that increasingly drive themselves rather than being driven, I always refer to Scotty from Star Trek 3. "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain," after he disabled an entire starship by pulling out a few computer components because it was designed to be completely controlled by computer.

      There's a lot of rushed EV's out there with overly complicated systems, but cars just shutting off and refusing to start is nothing new... it's just new for people buying brand new cars. For those of us that have never owned a new car, it's nothing new. Had the ECU let out the magic smoke in my 96 truck, a crank sensor go in a 95 town car, and the ignition module go in my 87 mustang. all of them the car just stopped in the middle of the road and didn't go again till they were fixed.

      Kind of the same with me. I bought a car and knew it had them, but the switch was on the side of the seat and you couldn't see it, and as I was driving it home from the dealer in the summer, my butt was getting hot, why is my butt so hot? Then I remembered the heated seats. First car with them.

      To be honest, I've missed gears sometimes. Maybe I even hit second doing 65, but if I did it wasn't an event. I wonder if the driver just slams into every gear as if they're drag racing. That would buy new synchros even if they nailed every shift.

      it blows the motor more than damages the transmission. Hitting 8,000 rpm because you down shifted to far at speed is why the rod was hanging out the bottom.

      It doesn't kill your tranny. I did it the 3rd or 4th day I had my 96 GT when I was still learning stick shift. I shifted from 3rd to 2nd, instead of 4th, going about 55 mph, oh and it was raining. It revved real high and threw the whole car almost completely sideways, tail whipped it a time or 2 back and fourth, and then regained control. Luckily it was raining and there was almost nobody on the road.

      I read that the build quality isn't that good, and that they've had at least one recall. It's amazing though how people who don't know much about EVs pile on the bad comments without first reading and learning about them first or firsthand. Meanwhile, I know a guy whose 500 mile 2024 Ram truck wouldn't start and needed towed to the dealer. It took two weeks to get it fixed and back to him. So, I guess a gas-powered truck that costs $55,000-$75,000 isn't any better.

      @@Lrules364 I have seen some new petrol cars with OTA software updates unfortunately, It seems to mostly be a general new car thing. But I think that you are right that it is especially prevalent in EVs since they are sold as being "techy" so they have loads of extra computerized crap in them. But again even regular cars are getting worse. I will never drive a car with a touch screen and internet connection, It is so dumb to have a cars computer connected to the internet, it is such a huge failure point. You can't even get a basic simple car new anymore, even base models have loads of unnecessary rubbish in them. Old cars are just better.

      Automatics have gears too, and most modern automatics have cutches instead of bands, including the transmission used in the Pilot. Dropping from 8th to 2nd at freeway speeds will absolutely make very bad things happen.

      I don't think there is. And even if there was, 60 mph on second gear is not that bad. Most cars will do about 60 on second gear no problem.

    I would have refused or torn up the contract if there was one, on that car where the customer was spitting into the passenger side. Spit is a germ carrier. That is disgusting in itself, but there is no doubt phlegm in there. There are reasons why they are laws against spitting in public.
