This wasn’t in the game. The story of Bill and Frank in the game was…not great. Much more bleak and tragic. But they decided to do better for the show. And it’s one of the best episodes of television I’ve seen in a long, long time.

Agree 💯 I loved it so much better in the game, loved getting to know their relationship and see how much it changed Bill for the better and the ending of their relationship was so sweet and heart wrenching but worth it to see!!

And it carries so much weight when you hear, "You were my purpose." Like, that's a choice Joel has to make now. With just him and Tess the purpose was stay alive as well as you can, now…

I like the twist of how Bill was older and worried about not being there for Frank but Frank ended up being the one with the illness. A lesson in there.

The episode is about the main theme of The Last of Us. Surviving vs Living.
Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live.s
That argument in the street is where the game Bill and the show Bill's timeline diverge. In the game Bill says absolutely not, Frank starts resenting him because he’s an extrovert. Eventually Frank leaves, gets bitten, hangs himself to not turn. And leaves an angry letter to Bill, to which Bill swallows his tears and feelings and goes, “Well then fuck you too”. Bill will die bitter and angry having never lived at all.
In the show Bill compromised a bit, and let Frank love him how he wanted to love him. Let him make a friend, Tess and Joel. Spruce up the neighborhood. Frank in turn compromised and settled for just that. It’s still an apocalypse, he can’t invite too many people or do too much. So they both died satisfied, in each other’s arms, after a full life.
In either case their plot purpose is to teach Joel that surviving isn’t enough. In the game Bill shows Joel how bad and purposeless his life can be if he doesn’t open up. In the show Bill shows Joel how good it can be if he opens up.
Bill lets the "danger" song play so that Joel and Tess would come, and get all the weapons and things they needed to have a happy ending like he did. If you read the rest of the letter Bill tells Joel which wine to use in order for Joel to woo Tess and start doing more than just surviving. But it's too late for Tess. Joel reads the letter and realizes that Frank died happy. And Tess died never having that chance. He looks at the key in his hand, and he could part ways with Ellie, but now Tess told him to save who he could save. Bill told him to protect others are what they're for. And he decides to open up a bit, the first time since the time stuck on his broken watch.
Both Bill and Franks from the game and show are sides of the same coin. The bad ending. And the good ending.

This episode is so amazing, for so many reasons. It's so rare to see a queer love story in non-queer-focused media that spends this kind of loving time just lingering on the development of that relationship. And honestly, it was incredible because unlike nearly anyone else in this damn mushroom apocalypse, Bill and Frank had agency in their lives...including in how it ended. That's so unheard of in a setting like this.

    Something special!
That is how i felt after watching this episode! Not that i had watched something jaw-dropping or mindblowing! Just that i had watched something special that i propably will remember for a long time!
This episode really showed the strengt of this series! Giving backstory to the side characters was an excellent idea! The story of Bill and Frank was very human and emotional! I will never forget that Piano-scene! Surprisingly moving!
The actors did a fantastic job of creating this unique relationship! I think I shed a tear multiple times! The formular of the show might not be new, but episodes like this, makes it feel fresh and unique!
    Look forward to it!

Added detail: in universe, the world ended in 2003. Gay marriage wasn't legal yet, so them getting married on Frank's last day is an extra punch. It wouldn't have been possible before the end for them.

Great episode this show just gets better and better with each episode. Kudos to everyone involve from the writers, staff and the actors of Murray Bartlett as Frank and Nick Offerman as Bill. Some people don't like the change in bill story from the game. But it was a better send off to the character as it changes Joel moving forward. Bill see himself in Joel. As these two try to isolated themselves from others. Because they don't wantt to be attach to no one. But you can see as Bill allowing Frank in made him change as a person. As you're now starting to see Joel open up to Ellie.

The way I hollered with "Im'ma have to do something strange for a piece of change" 🤣🤣🤣 Haven't heard that in a minute.
Y'all are right, this show does mess with various emotions each episode. I don't think I've been captured by a show like this since This Is Us.
If I were in their situation, I would have done what Bill did. I wouldn't want to watch the love of my life suffer, but I also don't know if I'd be able to go on with out them (and I mean this STRICTLY for an apocalyptic situation...not like now 😏)

About 90% of all you see is in the video game. Bill's story was expanded upon and improved. There are many video games that have great characters and brilliant narratives. This is perhaps the best game narrative or at least in the top five.

No spoilers, but this is not how Bill and Frank's story plays out in the game
Them being lovers is touched on briefly, but we don't see any of it
What the show did was give them a full, and fulfilling, life with one another
A huge deviation, but one that I think served the narrative well and made for some great television

I didn't play the game either, but from when I've seen, the Bill/Frank story is told differently... I suggest ScreenCrush or New Rockstars for a better understanding. I can say for sure that a lot of character back story in the game is revealed through letters like the one Ellie read and a good portion of the game is about scavanging and coming across similar letters that help you find tools and supplies to help with missions.
    Happy birthday AAJ.

In the game Joel and Ellie navigate all of Bills traps to finally meet him. Joel asks Bill where Frank is and Bill says he has no idea. He says Frank just left him and because of that Bill is extra sour and hates the world even more than usual. Bill decides to help Joel as long as he leaves and never comes back. While helping Joel get the truck, Bill finds Frank hung in the garage next to the truck with a note. The note says the Frank has been infected and didn’t want Bill to have to deal with that. Bill then finds some peace knowing Frank didn’t just walk out on him and doesn’t seem to hate the world as much. Other notes left around town describe Bill and Franks relationship, both the good and the bad. One of the notes is basically the argument they have in the street that’s in the show. In the game the truck won’t start and Bill helps to push it for a rolling start as a swarm of infected are surrounding them. Joel and Ellie escape with Bill fighting off what he can but eventually goes down to the swarm.
Although many deviations from the game in terms of action the show gets the tone down perfectly and is one of the best episodes of tv I’ve seen in a long time.

    • @lalalalisa41
      @lalalalisa41 Před rokem +2

Bill and Frank in the game ended on bitter terms. The suicide note you find and give to Bill basically says that Frank couldn't stand Bill anymore and he decided to steal the car battery to try and get out of there with the truck, but Frank ended up getting infected so he committed suicide before that happened. He also went into the part of town that "Bill was too scared to go to" and the note also said how Frank rather take his chances out there than to spend another day with Bill. Bill after reading that, cursed Frank and well yeah, their relationship didn't end so well...
I like to think the show version is like the "happy ending for Bill" version if the game version was like the "bad ending" one lol.
