Even as someone who played the game, it hits. You just know how much armor has peeled away from his heart throughout these episodes that he let her in like that. Next episode is going to be dope.

This episode went DARK...I too am glad Ellie was able to save herself.....I CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE what Joel would have done if he walked in on that man on top of Ellie like that....LAWDAMERCY....he better be glad it was her cuz if it was ME and I went in and SAW THAT....my humanity mercy and thought is out the damn window
In the game you get a small taste of what Joel would have done, but this really is Ellie's biggest moment and I love what they did with it. Very well done.

I love how even after Ellie proved to us that she can take care of herself no matter what physically, she still crumbled into a little girl when she saw Joel. She couldn't even form coherent sentences from the shock. She just need her daddy to hold her and she be ok.

You can sense the fear and rage take over Ellie in the restaurant scene, it broke my heart to see all her innocence leave her due to one sick man’s intentions.

When he called her baby girl the camera went to his watch right after.
Ellie didn't need Joel to save her, she did that on her own. But she does NEED Joel to be there for her, and sort of to save her, cuz no one can be on their own. their acting is so god damned perfect that we know what's going to happen but its so fucking good to watch.

I agree there were others. David said he wanted to "save" Ellie to be her father and he told that girl he slap he was her "father". In hindsight, he meant "Daddy".😱😱😱
I love how the other guy is just utterly shocked when Joel stabs his buddy. The fuck y'all thought this was?? This ain't no game! Y'all forfeited your lives the moment y'all went after Ellie lol
I don’t think it just because of Ellie. This is who is now. Thats why the people in Boston were scared of him.
This was an amazing episode. Very intense and brutal episode. This episodes shows how badass Ellie is and how much she has change since the beginning of the show to being protected by Joel to being the protector of Joel. And showing how much she has learned from Joel when it comes to survival. I really like the ending when this time Joel comforted her after her traumatic attack from David. But as well great job to Troy Baker as James as well the voice of Joel in the games and Scott Shepherd as David. As well a wonderful reaction from you three.
I was hoping that they would cast Troy in that David role. That would have been traumatic, but I wouldn't change it for anything. Scott Shepard was perfectly evil and I loved watching him die. If it had been Troy, part of me would have been taken out of it.

A penicillin injection like that is an IM (intramuscular) injection, i.e. it should be administered in a muscle. The thigh or the butt are some common places. But some types can simply be injected under the skin.
Where Ellie injects it... It should be effective.

Watched so many reactions to this episode and this one is my favourite so far. Loved how you guys mentioned that David definitely has been doing this before, even before the apocalypse. This was a very hard episode to watch story wise....cause grooming and eating people, but this was one of the best episodes of tv yet. I got so teary eyed when he called her baby girl. That's his child and there's no denying it now. My favorite part was when she chopped that man up in to itty bitty pieces. Oh and I haven't read the other comments yet so ya'll may already know, buuuut just in case - did ya'll know the actor who played James in this episode was the voice and mocap actor of Joel in the game? I thought that was really cool.

I’m a man of faith but I can honestly see myself doing horrible things in order to save and protect those that I love. I know that I will cross that line, if it means I could save my child or godchildren. I myself am not a parent yet, me and my wife are waiting for the moment, but I already know I would do what it takes in order to protect my child even if it means my humanity has to go on the back burner. Joel honestly did what any decent parent worth their salt would do. It’s just like what we saw Rick do in The Walking Dead.

The interesting thing is Joel used to be a murdering savage, especially in the early years after the outbreak with Tommy, and we see a glimpse of his old self here. It raises an interesting question about how much redemption you can actually achieve in this world; he now only kills in the name of (a sort of) righteousness but can that undo his past?
No spoilers, I want to ask a longwinded question to your question. How much is Joel willing to sacrifice to get back just the feeling he had when he had his daughter? Prior to the outbreak, his life was fine. He had his family and job. Then the world ends. You have to become A MONSTER to survive. Thats why the people boston are afraid of him. Joel probably liked it since he is VERY efficient at killing. He kept his watch like he was holding hope. How hard do you think Joel would fight to get that back? Especially if could you use your effective killing to get it.
2:54 These guys are experienced hunters and shooters. Given Ellie’s small frame and how she was holding the rifle, I think David realized she would have trouble shooting accurately.
Without being braced against her shoulder the rifle would probably fly right out of her hands if she pulled the trigger.
That’s why (and other reasons) David was willing to talk not because she was being overly perceived as a threat.
It’s a rifle not a 12 gauge shotgun. Accuracy problem maybe. Wouldn’t have hurt her or went flying though, plus she coulda shouldered it quick before shot from there that close. They were scared cause had drop on them, not terrified cause she was a little girl and alone but scared enough.
In the game she had a bow and arrow. I always thought David thought he try to manipulate her cause chances of her taking out two people with a bow is slim. He wasn’t scared of her because of that.
I echo the chorus of folks happy that she fought her own way out. The two of them are really taking care of each other now.
I don't disagree with David about one thing, though. Cordyceps isn't evil. It's just an organism trying to survive. I don't know about "love" being part of it, but life, for sure.

7:22 I think this trend exists because most if not all cult leaders are narcissists or have other Cluster B personality disorders, and people are naturally drawn to so many of the characteristics that those disorders possess. They're charming, manipulative leaders that feel little or no remorse. You'll find this in many high profile careers and fields, but religious figures often have the most direct control of and influence on the largest amount of people.

In hindsight, maybe the reason James and the other men wanted to kill Ellie was more of a mercy kill knowing the kind of person David was...The look on their faces as he was holding Ellie in his arms kinda says they were not with this guy.

@@tananario Well, I mean before, James just suggested letting Ellie go but as soon as David made it clear he wanted to bring her back, he resorted to killing her with all the other guys there being in agreement. So it made me wonder why he suggested letting her go at first to now wanting to just kill her before David could get there? Why not just go with what David said and bring her back alive?
This episode is a great example of why religion is not something one should organize a society around. Faith is a powerful, beautiful thing. It is also something that is easily exploitable by an organization or individuals. David is revealed to not even really believe in the stuff he preaches. He just saw an opportunity for self-aggrandizement, and an opportunity to exploit.
Before the apocalypse, he was a math teacher. And given everything we know about him and the shit he said about himself... Those poor kids. David had found another system and weak group to exploit.
Jackson works cuz they're sharing the resources, they're all working together, for one another. They've got a council that makes decision and the people have a say.
That's something a community can be formed around.

Amber raises a fascinating point: What is the "right" city to be in during the end of the world? Yes, clearly it varies depending on the TYPE of ending, let's just stick to fungus zombie one of TLOU.
"Cordy" prefers it when it's cool and moist, dark and dank, like sewer lines and basements. So hot, dry regions would seem better for humans, like Southwest of America, around New Mexico, basically where Breaking Bad was shot.
Also, it's a plant and hates wintertime cold so the North in general, especially along the Canadian border or on mountaintops where it stays colder longer. So Graham Greene from many shows and movies, like DANCES WITH WOLVES, and his wife from NORTHERN EXPOSURE, cabin or in Anchorage, Alaska, would be great. The South and Southeast, where it's hot and humid would be terrible but the middle areas between North and South, that temperate zone where it's not too hot and not too cold for Cordy, and gets humid, worst area to live.
QUEEN SUGAR's Nova aka TRUE BLOOD's Tara has a great idea of living on a hydroelectric dam in a snow resort hilltop. Genius. Self sufficient and has modern technology.

Very true. In a post apocalyptic or major disaster scenario, people don’t want to be lone wolves they want to be part of pack. Being part of a pack means you are protected and get fed.
So whether it’s Karen or Reverend Jackleg James here people will go along to get along. Trust and believe if all of these modern comforts vanished nobody would be trying to stand apart from a group to belong.
This happens in prisons everyday. A new inmate joins a crew or is considered a target of opportunity for others.

The great in this episode was that "baby girl" line. Chills. I would say romantic in a father-daughter way, which is so weird. I don't know, yall, I wasn't really into this episode. Hit and miss for me. I think every villain in the show was so nuanced and this was so trope-y stereotypical "white religious preacher leads evil cult" thing that I've seen in a million places. Even the cannibalism was underplayed to me. I know I'm in the minority, though. Great response, Ladies! I can't believe you guys are not blood sisters!
