Lex is the creator of the sound. Southside was a pupil that took the masters teachings and ran with it. SouthSide brought in a lot of producers in 808 Mafia to copy off of as well. SouthSide didnt originate shit. He copy everybody style hard as fck. He the guy that come in the studio and switch up a few kicks and add a few snares and get credit for half the production. Now i will say this. When it comes to bussiness and making money off beats. SouthSide is in the lead. He has the strongest hustle and bussiness mind. I REALLY respect Southside's grind & hustle. He's REALLY puttin' work in, salute for that.
That said, for a while I've felt his ego is a bit too big. Lex Luger started the TREND that made a lane for people like Metro Boomin', Southside and the whole 808 mafia.
Sure, Southside has been getting more placements as of late, but that's more of a CONNECTION thing than skills/talent. 50 Cent said it best back on a SMACK dvd interview, when he said "WHO you know will get you in (the game), WHAT you know will determine how long you stay."
Southside most likely has better relationships because he's actually from the same city and state as most of the rappers he produces for, so naturally he has a closer relationship with them, which translates into more placements.
Lex is from Suffolk, VA. Most people have never heard of that place. The Hip Hop scene there is not exactly on fire. Even with the hits he has under his belt, he;s seen as an OUTSIDER to the Atlanta crowd. Which is probably why he was kicked out of 808 Mafia. Southside and TM88 are from Atlanta, Lex isn't. Not hard to see how that clique mentality affected the business there.
I also thought it was odd that Southside said he wouldn't battle Metro, because they worked together. He worked with Lex Luger as well, but has no problem battling him. Just goes to show that he see's Lex as an outsider and whatever relationship they have is probably more business than anything else.
