Sharpening a Damaged Wood Carving Gouge

- Watch as I go through the process of sharpening this wood carving chisel and bring it back into decent condition.
I found this gouge had been damaged, I guess it had been dropped as there was a large chip broken out of the cutting edge. In desperation I dug out this hand grinder (yes the wheel is off centre) and ground the edge back into life then sharpened the chisel to a decent edge.
The old oak seen at the end is very hard and a good test for any woodworking tool.

Thank you for posting, useful for me as I have 'inherited' some badly sharpened gouges and I wanted a simple guide to rescuing them.
Cool grinding wheel!
I'm going to try and dress the stone with a diamond wheel in the next couple of days, get it to run true. Thanks for watching.
In Sweden it's common praxis to dress up stones with a steel pipe hold against the stone in a 45 degree angle. Works really good.
+Johan Friman thanks for the tip, I will look it up and give it a try.
Beautiful video, Francis.
I sharpen my carving (trademark arrow) with Diamand-sharper
I have a good flat wet stone in the workshop for all my normal chisels, i try to use only the old oil stones with the carving gouges, it keeps the good stuff flat and true. Thanks your your comments, much appreciated.
Here you go, I have "a set" (280/800, 1000/3000, 6000 and 8000) Japanese Waterstones. The 8000 and a leather strap I always polishing.
I bought Woodprix once and now I have lifetime access to thousands of woodworking projects.
