Timber Framing Tusk Tenon
Timber frame Tusk tenon joint, this joint is used mostly in floor construction. The tenon passes through the mortised timber and is wedged to hold tightly in place, the wedge is working in a similar way to the draw bore of pegged joinery. The top shoulder of the tenon is tapered back to reduce the material removed from the top side of the mortise.

Watch as I go through the process of sharpening this wood carving chisel and bring it back into decent condition. I found this gouge had been damaged, I guess it had been dropped as there was a large chip broken out of the cutting edge. When I cut tenons with the saw to waste method like that I run two or three cuts right next to each other at the shoulder, then the bit the handplane misses at its edge doesn't need planing down.

    Are there any guidelines or general rules of thumb to follow with respect to joint proportions, taper angles, etc? Im building a timber frame driveway arch and was going to use a scarf joint to get the length I need for the horizontal beam going across. Timbers need to dry but will probably be working with an 8x12 by the time I mill it down.

    If I wanted to span 24’ for a lean too shed, and my mill can only cut 18’ logs, could I do this with two say 6x6’s to have it completely open in the middle. I plan on using 2x6’s for Perlins to screw tin into. 3 poles, 24’ wide, 20’ deep poles spacing 10’

  • @michaelmewis4761

    Nice job, thanks for sharing. As a carpenter myself, I have always argued that the joist/beam is compromised in depth from the base of the tusk, its like notching out an 8x3" to a 6x3". This is why when the joint is structural, I always do the base of the two members the same as the top so that the whole beam is supported in its depth.

    I would love to see a full hour video, descriptive video with narration. I’m in need to learn all of this and make 2 of these joints in the coming 3 weeks. I would love to know where you would place this over a post. I have 3 posts and the middle post will not have braces, would you place the exact middle of this scarf joint under the middle of the post? I am also thinking of doing a tenon and mortise joint from post into the scarf joint.

    • @whirled_peas
      @whirled_peas Před rokem

      Don't do it like this - it's layed out wrong. It *is* a type of scarf joint but it's inferior to the hooked variety. Look up the difference. The hooked variety allows the wedges to work fully, whereas this type leads to the wedges potentially jamming inside the rebate.

  • @whirled_peas
    @whirled_peas Před rokem

    This scarf joint is layed out wrong. There should not be a groove in both pieces (forming a rectangle) - the wedges are not working fully to push the pieces together (they'll only work if your rectangles are not aligned). A correct undersquinted scarf joint is a hook shape - not a plane with a groove.

    • @whirled_peas
      @whirled_peas Před rokem

      This will still function fine for most intents and purposes, but it's not optimal.The wedges have half the bearing surface they should due to this design.

    • @whirled_peas
      @whirled_peas Před rokem

      I've just uploaded a quick video showing how one should be layed out.
