- Ready to get growing with deadlifts?
I wanted to make this video to point out a couple of things, the biggest of which is how you pull through the movement. A lot of times I see people perform these and focus on driving with their legs to get it started off the ground. For me it’s a missed opportunity to really put GOOD stress on your entire back so shift that weight into your heels, keep your knees behind the bar and pull from your hips with a flat back!
Let me know what you think in the comments below and what video you want me to do next!
SONG: Blues or Something Like That - Tigerblood Jewel
“It was awful.” _ Ryan Humiston
Most honest statement ever made.
I lol'd. I love this dude.
Ryan - what is the brand of workout pants are you wearing?
Hey Ryan do you have any fucking clue how hard it is to get a message to you on CZcams? If I use Firefox to watch your videos it blocks all the stupid ads I have no interest in. But I am not allowed to comment on your videos. I have no clue if you will see this. You are still in your prime. Please break your advice down to guys in your age group and people like me 20+ years older than you. YES 60+ years old really look forward to your advice. Please help us. And no we don't need financial advice when we are looking to find a way to get a pump at the gym.
100% agree but at the same time his a funny dude 😅
True indeed 🤣. I’m all smoked out when I do this. I’m 56, so I thought it’s years. Hearing him say it just lightened my load a lot.
*ryan your channel is actually quality*
Yes I agree

This man is so swole, he became a deadlift and had a son of a deadlift.
That was funny right there!
Wut
Swole is the goal
this man is awesome but on a boatload of drugs
@wulfgar3000 oh im sorry hes a complete natural. My mistake!!!!!
You keep correcting my mistakes I'm beginning to wonder if you've seen me in the gym. I guess my mistakes are common. At any rate, thank you for all these videos.
God bless 🙏
man you're on another level. Seriously you can explain the hell out of a movement. A few minutes of your videos and I finally understand how to connect with my muscle. Best channel on CZcams.
This man is truly helping me sculpt my body back into shape. Thank you sir.
Finally just found a video on deadlift I actually find fitting and helpful. You have one of the best workout channels period, thank you man.
i finally understood deadlifts thanks to you .over 20 years of going to gyms and never really got it! may you live long and prosper!
Ryan, thank you for getting straight to the point and offering awesome advice.
Keep going Ryan! This is definitely my favorite channel for fast and no-nonsense tips. You're approaching 150k so quickly good job keep it up!
Redgrave Strength The future called: October 2020, and almost 500k subscribers! Ryan's flyin'.
@Stik 1.4M!!
Really appreciate your no BS approach to growth. I’ve dealt with little to no growth for so many years and after a couple of recent surgeries I came across your videos. I’ve seen some serious improvements since following your workouts. Thanks again!
Ryan has great advice. I've been lifting for 37yrs and I'm still picking up good stuff from his channel.
Best deadlift video I’ve seen. Literally exactly how I train it.
Thanks Ryan! This is my go-to channel now. So glad I came across this video
No BS, Just pure knowledge and work! Thank you Ryan! Let's get after it.
I know this is 2 years old but this guy cracks me up, he's switched on, informative and jacked plus I'm about to Sunday afternoon deadlift n this got me fired up.
Thank you brother.
Glad I found this channel during the winter bulk. Straight to the point.
The power of the beard adds 20% to any deadlift
True. I forgot to shave one day and went to the gym and had 10% increase in strength.
@Yirlani stop drinking soy ;)
You’re right
@Yirlani grown ass MEN have beards, and it's coming from a 19 year old lol, i don't have good beard growth yet but it really does make you look better if you dont have a nappy ass beard and just a mustache and some little hairs on your chin, makes you look more masculine, grown and looks better, so idk where your thought comes from
I actually lift with just my beard
I love that someone showed how cardio can be done with deadlifts. I adore heavy deadlifts, but you cannot do them every week and that is a nice way to get this fix every week on that special day!
I like your style. It’s do or die for me now. You’re my new coach! Thank you
The only person who would dislike this video is just another PT CZcamsr who can't handle this mans trending growth.
Hell yeah! My favorite day! Thanks sir!!! Always into learning something new. Thanks for the lesson!
Absolutely love your channel - straight, honest & to the point.
The only people giving these videos a thumbs down are all the other channels losing views to this no nonsense, straightforward, logical, and scientific approach to getting results. Great channel, you deserve the subs.
Amazing. That form looks exactly the same as the first 2 reps, each time!
I love it when you said" That was awful " 😂😂 good old deadlift. I always sleep sooo well after a heavy deadlift session! great
Seems like the type of guy to be honest and straight to the point... i love it.... new subscriber
I've been doing several reverse hyper reps before and after my workouts. Feel like it really preps the lower back beforehand and relief at the end.
Mate, I absolutely enjoy your videos! I very much appreciate you for making these videos. You have helped me so much in my workouts! So many things I didn't understand until I watched your channel. Grateful for me finding your channel
I believe my form is good but I'm going to start concentrating on forcing my knees out. Ryan is a beast!!
Ive watched 100s of training and how to grow muscle on you tube and Ryan os the best ive seen. Hes knowledge and approach to training makes complete sense. I was so confused with my training after 5 years with all the info online until I stumbled upon this chanel.
LEGEND DUDE 👍🏼
I can appreciate the fact his videos are short n to the point. Quality over Quantity.
I’m just so jealous of that open gym man! Noone to be seen. It seems so meditational
Eh... Personally I’m an environment guy and being in a packed gym helps motivate me
@@aussie97531 I feel you on that...but for some people i can see how an open gym helps with not ego lifting as well.
@@aussie97531 Packed gyms help with showing off to the opposite sex.
I go to a gym that's 24/7 and it's almost completely dead, during peak hours you will see around 15- 20 ppl in it, and it's not small by all means, I usually go around 11pm there is usually 2- 4 people lifting
But..... A sad but... It's a cock fest
@@aussie97531 You just like it cus of the thicc booties that walk past. Don’t lie.
Love your videos straight to the point and you always hit the key topics! Your videos have definitely helped me out in the gym! Keep up the good work!
Man pushing my knees against my arms was the best advice I received on DL in my 17yrs of lifting. Thank you
I discovered this by accident myself and never knew it was actually right!
Quality channel with quality information and guidance. My wife brought me here for your witty comments and jokes I stayed for the GAINS!!! Love the channel bro stay solid stay healthy
4:28 i always do deadlifts this fast, best growth ever. thank you !
I love how Ryan basically tells you to not bother with any lifting equipment other than straps because I really can't be bothered to buy any
I know right? If we were supposed to do these moves with extra equipment then why would you do these moves in the first place if they're useless in real life?
I use belt only. Cause my grip is relatively strong
Since moving to barefoot my deadlift form has skyrocketed.
Was really happy to see this as one of your tips.
This guy is great. Very straightforward and to the point.
Valgus knees aka knock knees were a huge problem for me when performing squats and deadlifts back about 5 months ago, lately I’ve been pushing them out just like Ryan Humiston stated and it does help drastically. Amazing channel and glad I found it
Hey man any cure for knock knees you found?
@@adarshsrivastav3991 Asian squats bro, literally worked a few weeks into adding it to my stretches, and ALWAYS stretch before lifting or performing anything. Can also help to gain more depth.
I love versa grip! They are easily the best straps.
Really grateful I found this channel. Its like having a friend telling you the shit you need to hear.
I use to watch a lot of BS youtubers videos but every since I been watching you I’ve been getting way stronger and my form is better …. Thanks bro 💯
I’m hungry for this video Ryan. THANK YOU for attacking the deadlift. I needed this. Cheers man
If only my gym was that empty all the time.
Thank you Ryan! Every time i watch your videos i learn something new and i apply in my routine and it makes a difference. so Thank you and keep up the good work!
This completely changed my mentality when it comes to training, actually getting stronger fr fr!
What I like about you Ryan - and what I’ve done most of my life - and what you emphasize and motivate me to continue - is BURN OUT sets. Just go to complete exhaustion. I sometimes do legs and after a burnout set I literally feel like I’m gonna black out (not quite) and I need to / want to hold onto something and BREATHE deep - 4 seconds in, 2 second hold, 3-4 seconds out. I sometimes need 90 seconds of just breathing before I can move on in my workout. In this video after your burnout you had a bit of a hard time talking. I KNOW you did the burnout! I don’t know how long you went after that set before you hit Record on the camera but it was evident you still were gettin after it. I see so many guys in the gym who probably are in the gym for an hour but their actual time under tension is minimal. They do quick and fast reps and just 3 sets and move on. Better than nothing. But not for growth. I like walking out of the gym maybe 40 min later and am completely DONE stick a fork in me. Thanks Ryan. You do help me to get after it.
Lmao at the way he walks away from that long set. I know the feeling.
Lol it happens on leg day like on squats i dont do deadlifts cuz i can just squat
Yeah I almost passed out a time lmao walked away just like that and leaned on a machine 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the high quality information. I am just getting back into deadlifts as I have really bad piriformis and you are showing really good form for us to imitate.
HARD WORK, not gimmicks!!
Thanks for your emphasis!!
Just love how you can trust this guy purely based on his tone of voice💪🏼
Zoefboy H That’s what I was thinking too
Ryan! Dude! Those v-grip pullups were amazing. I just did a slow and controlled 4xfailure and I felt like a damn Harrier jump jet afterwards. I've literally been following your channel for 5 days and I've learned so much. Keep up the good work!

I first started following this guy 3 or 4 months ago. I never heard of him before that. He had 225 thousand followers, now he has almost 600,000. I guess it means a lot of people have discovered him just like me.
I like to say “get after it” now
Especially when your showing your buddy a girl at the gym.
Just finished the vid Ryan and you know what, I forgot how much I love the deadlift and I miss executing it for that overall huge feel.
The issue has been the small of my back. I’ve watched Rippitoe (spell?), and some other dudes I respect.
But you know what man, every time I follow those “correct” instructions, I tend to feel vulnerable in the pull - the start. The whole thing just freaks me out and it’s infuriating.
I’m going analyze this vid and get after it. Thanks again 🙏
great channel for anyone, especially the beginner. i love the NO BS approach & instruction. keep pushing the awesome content
Honestly one of the best deadlift tutorials I have seen well done Ryan good cues and fantastic solutions to fix posture.
Next back vid can we get rack pulls. Been moving away from the deadlifts lately.
@K. C. W Rack pulls def good for the back
Above the knee at the knee below the knee all target em well
Could you do a vid on what you eat/dieting advice?
Thanks love the vids!

I needed this..was having problems with my deadlifts and you answer the question that i was having problems with!!! Thanks!
I learn more and more everytime I watch. Thanks man !
Started deadlifting right when I started lifting (last December). Started at a 135lb DL at 149lbs body weight (6ft tall). This September I hit 405lbs for 2. I am preparing for a fitness test in a few months and have stopped deadlifting due to small back strains occasionally. I weigh 182lbs at 6ft and 13-14% body fat and I attribute this weight gain to mainly the deadlift. An excellent exercise that I am now leaving in the past. Thanks for the video.
Congrats on your accomplishments man, never quit! Speaking of that, i hope you never quit deadlifts either and eventually come back to them!
@@EvsPersonal Isn't it too taxing on the CNS and dangerous overall?
@@GamingCentralTV1 its taxing to the cns yes, but you have to make sure you recover well and sufficiently after doing them. And no, they are not dangerous when done correctly. Arguably the best exercise out there as well
@@EvsPersonal The devil is in the details.. "When don correctly..." And it turns out it's hard for many to do them correctly. I injured my back and it took about 6 months before I was back 100%. These day's I focus on RDL's and rack pulls. I'm actually probably fit enough to return to the deadlift now, but I'm not really a powerlifter planning to compete so I can hit those muscles with safer alternatives.
@@EvsPersonal i would imagine its dangerous once you're repping 405+ but then again with that logic any lift is dangerous once you start putting up some decent weight. I have no real argument for this I prefer rack lifts personally.
4:22 Ryan Humiston, what was that growl?
Short and simple. Quality advice!!! Thank you
Best lifting videos online bro straight to the point god damn refreshing

This is a great channel. To the point, succinct, and accurate info. Thanks, Ryan
Second Ryan releases a program, I will be buying it! Never has “shut up and take my money” applied to something I want to buy before.
I went from deadlifting with Chucks, then to barefoot, and now lifting shoes. I would recommend giving the shoes a try (sans socks). It’s by far my favorite anchor, so to speak.
Will you do a video on breathing/bracing with DL, please? I’ve learned so much from this channel. It’s all easily applicable info. 🤙🏽
I would really like to know about breathing patterns for the different exercises that you demonstrate. Most especially for the heavy lifts.. Dead lifts, RDLs, etc.
Really enjoying your very informative vids.
I use resistance bands as I workout at home and don't have room for a weight set\bench etc. But I find I'm able to adapt much of what you've shown.
Thank you for the vids.
lunaticprophet
My understanding is such that ideally you exhale after each rep is completed and then take another breath to build pressure in core. The point is to maintain positive pressure while loaded. If you must exhale at the top (which is what it sounds like is being done here) it is acceptable provided you take another breath and pressurize prior to controlled decent.

You're exploding man, I saw you back at 25k subs, I've implemented alot of stuff from your vids, I appreciate the advice.
You’re a true inspiration! You inspired me to start my channel.
Ryan, do you normally dead lift on back or leg day? I switch it up personally
Walonzo Santana is your name Ryan
Bantersaurus Rex nice joke lol
This dude casually doing my max for reps. Of course, I’ve only been lifting for a couple months and he’s built like a trim hulk hogan so that makes sense I guess
And good looking too ;)
There are people who lift 450kg for reps...
135?
For every 1lb its 2.2kgs. So without calculator I'm thinking roughly 200ish

I’ve been training for a number of years and D/L has been a lift I’ve really enjoyed. But even though I’ve competed in powerlifting (light weight master 1 lifter) bad habits are ever present and my nemesis in D/Ls is incorrect knee movement. They travel inward ever so slightly. Something one of the guys noticed just last night which got me working on driving my knees out when setting up and loading the bar. The exact same advice you’ve offered. One of your vids was in my feed and I’m glad it was...you’re coaching and tips are on point and I like your matter of fact / humble style. Im now a subscriber.!! Cheers fella :-)

***I rather run that mile!!! 😂
Kind of dangerous advice. Deadlift is not to be messed with. It's a compound movement. Legs should be used with the back to lift safely
What did you expect from a guy who buys his shirts at Baby Gap?
Moss Phelan I agree. Maybe if he was making a vid on the stiff leg version I would agree with him. But if we’re looking at a perfect deadlift for strength, there should be leg drive.
In any case, isn't the deadlift mostly for the hamstrings anyway? Surely there are better exercises out there if back is your focus.
therealdonut45 more so glutes, but you’re right, better off doing rows if you want to build a back
The usual no-nonsense Ryan Humiston stuff 👍. Checked all the boxes in a short crisp video. The man doesn’t bore you to death with unnecessary detail. Addressed every single potential FAQ without them being asked. I’m 56, have no problem lifting heavy, but do want to keep it safe. This vid definitely works for me. Keep it up Ryan. Good as ***k 😀

This video has easily been the most beneficial info for my deadlift form.

LOVE your content and I appreciate all of it Ryan! Thank you!
Great video !!
I noticed that most people dont do a deadlift but instead do a clean pull . I made the same mistake for long time and wondered why my hamstrings werent growing . This video exactly covers this problem . And one thing to mention is that if you deadlift in oly shoes you engage your quads more in comparison to deadlifting in flat shoes even if you dont want to .
