    I knew my dad worked in construction but never knew he’s a rodbuster until today. Showed him one video and led to him telling me about his job, a rodbuster. I have a newfound respect knowing he does this kind of work. Now I know why he’s always pointing out certain buildings.

      I started just after my 18th birthday, about to turn 28 in a month this year. The rodbuster life is the only life for me, I lcoe the environment, I love the crew, I love the work, and it's one hell of a confidence boost now that I'm running my own crews and in charge of my own towers. Best job I ever had and I'll die with rebar on the mind lmao

    “You just gotta do it, it’s not really a big deal. If you get inside your head about it aww this is heavy… it’s gotta be done.” As a steel fixer myself (rodbuster), such true words. Those are the hardest days when the body is fatigued, a big push and you start getting into your head, that’s when you tell yourself “oh well, it’s gotta be done.” If you’re a good worker and the body isn’t functioning like usual, if you’ve got a good crew they’ll pick up the slack, just do the same for them in the future.

    I'm an industrial carpenter, and there's alot of hard days in that field. I work beside an awesome crew of rodbusters, on the project I'm at, right now. One thing I've learned over the past few years, especially on this job with the scope that it is. Rodbusters...there's not many days that are easy. Some days may be easier than others, but to most people they're still hard days.

    Probably only vid I've seen where I can relate to what the fixers are saying.
    Not sure if the diameters are the same in the US but that bottom mat looks like full length 40 or 50 mil bars and you know you've done a shift after throwing a few tonne of them babies around.
    I'm out of the game now but managed 30 years before tendonosis f*cked me up. My old man was a fixer and when I was a nip hand he'd dog me to hell all day but some how I stuck at it and like the young fellow on here said some guys can't even manage a shift or don't come back the next day.
    These guys are proper fixers and that's kind coming from me because I usually hate to see them using those darn plyers 😉 we spin 8"nips over here.

    • @jonasjelich4576
      @jonasjelich4576 Před rokem +1

      Are you Canadian or from Europe? I've worked with Canadians and Bosnians they used nips I never could get the feel for those things always broke the wire haha. Bars in the USA all go by 1/8ths of an inch so a number 4 is 4/8ths which means 1/2 in. A number 8 is an inch diameter. Goes 3-11s 14s and 18s I've heard of bars bigger then 18s but never worked with or seen them

      @eardwulf785 Před rokem

      @@jonasjelich4576
      Hello mate I'm from Northern England. I suppose that the nearest thing we've got to am inch bar would be T25, that's 25 millimetres diameter tensile steel. On our drawings, say a bottom mat it would read something like this:
      126 05 150 B1
      so that's 126 bar mark 05 at 150 centres on bottom one which is lowest on the cross section so B2 is the bar on top that laces the mat; T1 & T2 is top. In walls it'll say FF & NF or EF which means får face, near face and each face.
      Then on the schedule (bending sheet) it will detail what 05 is: diameter, length, shape and amount
      American fixers are known as Rod Pushers I've heard? You guys will have lots of sky scraper experience in the States I guess. I still do the odd shifts, just small private jobs like rafts for house or garage extensions, swimming pools, that kind of thing but I retired a few years ago

      Your 18's must be same as our 50mm that's the same as the external circumference of a scaffold tube. Our stock lengths are 12m (40ft) but in special circumstances it can get bigger) I worked on a nuclear reactor base and that had 13 layers of 50mm at 18 lengths shaped like half of a key hole.

      @@eardwulf785 Oh England nice cheers from across the pond brother! The bending sheet and wall detail is the same thing here. A straight bar they'll say length in feet and the quantity needed liked 2×15 #8 30ft @12in which means at two different locations you will have 15 number 8 (1 inch diameter) spaced out at a foot. Special bars like a wall dowel or a bar with in awkward bend like a Z bar will have a mark number on it to identify it such has 9B02. The first number will always tell you how big the bar is so that would be a number 9 (1 in and a 1/8 diameter) we do lots of high rises and skyscrapers an every since 9/11 they have started using core walls in the center of the buildings where the elevator shafts and stair wells will be. It used to be all sheet rock now it is all reinforced concrete since 9/11. Congratulations on retirement enjoy it! We have a hard job but honest and very rewarding! And we are called "Rod Busters" over here in the USA

      Sounds like we're not so different infact technically speaking I have worked in America. We have USAAF bases scattered across the UK, in the south east mostly. Many moons ago around the time that the Berlin wall came down I worked on USAAF Alconbury and although the RAF were based their too it was known as little America. It was fucking great I was still in my twenties, American currency was used on site so we couldn't use the cigarette vending machine but some of the servicemen would sort it out for us.
      Every morning without fail the American national anthem would be played over multiple tannoys.
      It was used by the Eighth Air Force, 93rd bomber group since 1942. With Russia becoming less of a threat it was closed down along with other bases but I've heard it is going to be recommissioned as a result of the situation in Ukraine.
      Yeah the Eighth AF are a legend around here.

    That "rodbuster" is to tough job and at last in Europe didn't pay much. Do framing and trim here in USA with wood, much easier at body. Stay away from rodbustering if you can. Ironworkers are guys that install steel structures, and it is much better job that pay better and require some technical knowledge. And rodbustering require only one guy to think something, to read blue print. All other guys can just carry rebar and bend it. Hope they are paid well here in USA but I doubt it.
