  • Today we tackle three projects in the fishroom: 1. planting HUNDREDS of red mangrove propagule seed pods, 2. Planting a few dozen Azalea Spiderwood seeds, and 3. Making some DIY coconut aquarium planters. This was a really fun day with a TON of knowledge to share, so make sure to watch the entire thing!

Hey just discovered your channel. Love that you're doing a vid on red mangrove and a how to on them. I'm in the Philippines and I regularly collect them here. Fiddler crabs, mud skippers and shrimp fish are mostly what you see in the shallow area where the propagules root themselves. The trees shed their leaves and fall in the water making the sand in that location into mud. So I've found that the propagules dow very well in clay-like substrate.

For the coconut plants you did, I only have one suggestion/ potential idea for improvement. Drill a few additional holes toward the bottom to allow for water circulation. 2nd buy/Utilize Window screen from a home improvement store and super glue on the interior of the coconut to hold soil in-place and you'll very likely be more successful. My only concern is that the lake of aeration from water flow will cause unwanted rotting from a unwanted bacteria or algae. Just my thought. Great video though. Thank you.

This is cool! I'm learning alot. I'm a tour guide in Brunei and we have a Mangrove forest here along our river and ive been trying to learn more and more on how the rhizophora species grow. Admittedly, there are other mangrove species growing in our mangrove forest but the red mangrove and the nipah mangrove are the dominant ones and where we can usually find our endemic proboscis monkeys. Thank you for providing educational videos, very helpful!

Definitely get some mummichogs in there and maybe some mollies, mangroves will feed very heavily and will outcompete each other.

I find mangroves very interesting I first learn about them on the Smithsonian video library and how the small fish and crabs and other sea life feed on them. They are very important to our marine life. Smithsonian did not say how they were planted. Thanks for the information. and I hope they grow very well for you.

Amazing. Teach me to plant mangrove propagule in a swampy mud flat in the Niger Delta Rivers state Nigeria Africa

  • @RipVanWinkle_Nature_Discovery

Fiddler crabs come out of their sand burrows at low tide and are out on the bare sand between the trees and propagules when the tide is out, so the best environment for them would be a flood and drain system, with at least an hour where the top of the sand is exposed. Just a suggestion for you. I subscribed. :)

I wish I could just go outside and collect them. They sell the pods here (Germany) for like 8€ (9,10$) a piece. Your bin would be so much worth over here, haha.

you can, the ones i kept in freshwater developed a magnesium or iron deficiency i believe, easier to dose/fertilize these in their own brackish tank
