    There’s a scene with Connery in disguise in a worker’s jumper and he takes it off and he has a suit underneath. It’s a homage to Goldfinger

    I was on a mission in Bosnia when this film came out. I was working with young, 20-something female Serbian interpreters and told them about this movie. When I mentioned Sean Connery was in it, all the girls were, "Ooo, Sean Connery! 😍😍😍"
    I remembered thinking 'wow, the old man's still got it.'

      It seems like it was very much her decision to slow down as she decided to focus on her family in the mid 2000's [as well as doing stage work] before making a comeback in the 2010's although mostly in supporting parts/lower profile stuff [more recently working on streaming shows like 'Wednesday'].

    Fun Fact:
    Catherine Zeta-Jones was dubbed in Japanese by Rika Fukami (best known as Minako Aino/Sailor Venus of the original *"Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon"* anime series & film trilogy) who had previously dubbed for Bond girl Kara Milovy (Maryam D'Abo) in the 1998
    TV Asahi edition of *"The Living Day-lights"* (1987).
    On a side note,
    Kara had been previously dubbed
    by Masako Katsuki (Michiru Kaiou
    /Sailor Neptune) for the film's TBS
    (Tokyo Broadcast System) edition
    in 1993, and she went on to dub
    for Dalton's second Bond girl: Pam
    Bouvier (Carey Lowell) in both the
    1990 VHS & the 1996 TBS edition
    of *"Licence To Kill".*

    I've always loved Entrapment. It's just a fun movie, definitely in the same line of movies as those you compared it with. I've never really seen the relationship between Mac and Gin as a romantic one though, even though the movie does kind of nod to that at times. They seem much more of a mentor and mentee, each learning from the other and gaining respect for each other, in some similar ways as Connery's character was to Christian Slater's in The Name of the Rose.

    This films does feel very '1999', not only in the millennium countdown [originally planned-like Tomorrow Never Dies-to be around the Hong Kong hand over in 1997] but also the locations- Malaysia hosted an F1 race for the first time that year, hosting the commonwealth games in 1998 [when that was more significant competition than it is now] and, like Saudi Arabia currently, was making a big push to increase it's profile internationally. Bar jokes about the 'laser scene' [and age gap], it does seem to mostly be forgotten now [personally I don't recall seeing it very much after it's initial TV premier and I can't say I have much interest in changing that].

  • @jamesatkinsonja
    @jamesatkinsonja Před 6 měsíci +2

    I do feel if there is an issue with 'age gaps' in films, it isn't really to do with specific examples [as chemistry is always a personal thing] but more that you rarely see films [especially big Hollywood films] where an older female actress is romancing a much younger man. The Bond girls are generally much younger than Bond's [as shown by Honor Blackman being one of the older ones at 39] which was something Roger Moore felt uneasy about. Maybe it's why Monica Bellucci being 4 years older than Daniel Craig was deemed newsworthy for her Spectre Cameo.

    I have seen Catherine Zeta-Jones being linked to the 'lost 3rd Dalton film' by some Bond fans-probably due to this film as the lead Bond girl-Connie Webb-was a cat burglar. It really doesn't tally to where Zeta-Jones was career wise in 1990/91 [just making her breakthrough in 'Darling Buds of May' in a 'girl next door' role] and [like many Bond girl roles at the time] the part was earmarked for an American actress.

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 Před 6 měsíci +1

      To be fair, even though she was playing a farmer's daughter in Darling Buds she was meant to be and was a knockout, both looks and personality wise. But although the show did make her talked about in the papers as a national sweetheart, she wasn't been talked up for movies. In fact after the series ended she had a few empty years. Seemingly overexposed in the press because of her love life, she couldn't get much notable work in the UK and so moved to L.A. There a part in a Titanic mini series caught the attention of Spielberg who suggested her for the female lead in The Mask Of Zorro to it's director, none other than Martin Campbell. And the rest is history. Interesting comparison with the Gin character to Connie Webb though.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@davidjames579 Agreed-she was very much an It girl [by UK standards] but had a bit of a fallow period after the 'Darling buds' finished before Zorro [I didn't know Spielberg recommend her for it!-that's cool]. I've heard Campbell wanted Goldeneye's Izabella Scorupco for the Zorro part but she turned it down [she does show up in Campbell's 'Vertical Limit'] It's interesting that when the 'Bond 17' script pretty much became the basis of TND, the Webb character was dropped and the supporting character of the Asian agent was beefed up to become Wai Lin.

      @@jamesatkinsonja Yeah Spielberg produced The Mask Of Zorro. And selected Campbell based on GoldenEye. Yeah I'd heard he wanted to work with Izabella again. I believe the beefing up of the character Mi Wai (groan) into a main character was down to Roger Spottiswoode who really wanted to make a film with Michelle Yeoh and showcase her martial arts. You can see that her infiltration of Carver's Hamburg HQ seems like something Connie would do.

    It’s serious pandering to older men who want to believe they age like “fine wine.” As a 31 y.o. who’s been propositioned by a friend in his 60s… no.
    That aside I like the film!

    Great movie. It was awesome on the big screen especially the action at the end. I never really thought about the age difference, i guess Connery and Zeta-Jones were just so fantastic in the roles that it didn't matter. I miss fun movies like this and Thomas Crown with cool actors and globe trotting adventure. LOLs about the poster at the video store. We used to have that poster on the wall in the garage where my old band used to rehearse, for inspiration of course.

    Just noticed something random. In the music video for A View To A Kill Simon Le Bon wears headphones and acts shifty while operating a drone camera from what appears to be a Walkman. In the very next Bond film The Living Daylights Necros acts shifty a number of times while wearing headphones and uses a remote control disguised as a Walkman. A reference or was it just in the filmmaker's subconscious?

    To my understanding originally actresses Angela Bassett and Nicole Kidman were considered to play Gin. However Catherine Zeta-Jones had just made her star making roll in The Mask of Zorro and became an international star and was immediately pursued for the roll and Zeta-Jones jumped at the chance to work with Legendary Sir Sean Connery. The film success led to plans for a sequel but plans were nixed When Connery retired

    As most Malaysian seen the movie, it's pretty cringe how they portrayed Kuala Lumpur. We're a modern city and using special fx they combined the town of Melaka directly with the Petronas Twin Towers in the back ground making our city look like it's back in the 60s or something. 😂 You know who portrayed our city a lot more accurately? Jackie Chan movies or most Hong Kong movies in general, older movies like Police Story 3 or newer ones like The Viral Factor.

    Nice of you to review this Calvin. Great work again. I do agree that I think the film does trend on the age difference sensitively due to the performances of Sean Connery and Katherine Zeta Jones doing most of the heavy lifting.
    The choices of filming Katherine's various "butt angle shots" as I will be calling them...I dunno. I feel their is something a bit male gaze about them and loses some marks of its sensibilities. The film makers knew what they were doing.
    Also, weird how we mirror each other between this film and the Thomas Crown affair. Entrapment was one I would watch with me and my Dad but Thomas Crown Affair escaped me until recently.

      Connery was one of those rare actors who even at pension age, women in their 20's would say is sexy. It was the same thing with Roger. David Walliams mentions it in his interview with David Zaritski where he says that his then wife said Roger really is still sexy after meeting him, despite him being old enough to be her Grandad. So I think less chance of criticism as they could get why, even when the aged male star, young hot female star pairing was a trope.
