    Thank you for this video! I’ve been wanting to try shapes. I’ll be on the hunt for the patterns you need mentioned . I’m currently making rag throw pillows for my couch. I also wanted to share my technique for adding a border. I cut strips 1 1/2 - 2” wide and sew them on to the edge of the blanket. You don’t wrap the fabric over the edge, but instead just butt it up to the edge. I usually do 2-3 layers. I pin them on, then do the seam around the edge. That way you are only making one seam, then rag like usual. It makes a dramatic difference in the look. You don’t have to attach the strips together in length, you can just use your scraps. I hope that makes sense. So it’s essentially like how you did it, but you don’t fold the fabric over the blanket, you add it on top.

    I have been sewing for 60 years. Quilting for 20 years of that. Making my first rag quilt now.
    I did learn that if you are using up batting leftovers, do not cut batting the same size. Batting should be smaller 1-1/2 inches on each side so that you cannot see batting after washing.
    I have now prepared over 70 squares now. My squares are 10 inches and I anticipate another 1-2 weeks for this.
    This is not as easy as it was reported. If I had to advise a newby, I’d say to proceed slowly. Those scissors can ruin it. Careful and methodical is the way forward. I will post my finished quilt. 120 squares and mostly denim, which rags so nicely. Just take a deep breath if you get overwhelmed and walk away for a while. All be be okay.

    I love the idea of adding a "binding" on the edge to make the edge ragging fuller. I'm recycling a flannel sheet set to make a twin size quilt for my great niece Kylie. The original sheet set was queen size. The fitted sheet is the "batting" because it is worn. The selvedges on the flat sheet will be perfect for the binding. It will add strength to the edge and use up all the sheet set!

      @@TamarasJoyDIY When I buy the satin blanket binding in packages, I open each one. They are not all made with one side longer than the other. I buy all the even ones 😇. I also, put the binding on before ragging (word?) the quilt, and use a walking presser foot. It gets pretty thick at the seams. I didn’t on the first blanket, and it looked a bit rough.

    For the edge on the quilts, if you place the fold on the back leaving it at it 1/2 inch and 1 1/4 in on the front on the front-equally 3 1/4 cut of fabric. This should give you two layers and the back should look good when you sew the 1/2 seam.

    Hi! One more question. Do you recommend prewashing flannel which will be used as a center for a cotton rag quilt. You told me in a previous posting that you usually don’t prewash cotton fabrics. I have decided to follow your practice. I thought I heard you say in one of your tutorials NOT to prewash flannel but a friend of mine suggested I should. Your opinion?

    • @TamarasJoyDIY
      @TamarasJoyDIY  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi 😃If you are prewashing one fabric then definitely prewash them all. If my blanket is only flannel and I want it to rag out anyways I don’t worry about washing. Often fabric is prewashed these days before being sold as fabric is also precut into smaller packed sizes for quilting and other crafts. HOWEVER it really depends on the quality of the fabric you are buying as well as the colors. If you are planning on putting red and white pieces together then for sure prewash to take any risk of bleeding away. In the end some prewashing is only going to take a little extra time and if it makes you feel more comfortable then do it. It will only help your project💝be that much better😁

      Hi Holly, Welcome! The sewing foot and needle can be the same used for cotton. A good needle would be a 90/14 Quilting needle or Universal needle and if you want to use a special foot I would suggest a walking foot. But with my rag quilts I used the normal foot that my sewing machine came with. Hope that helps!

      Hi Michelle and welcome to the world of sewing! Rag quilts are a great place for beginner sewers to start. However I have never added photos onto fabric with fabric photo paper. But if I were to do this I can only assume it would work better on cotton fabric then flannel fabric so I would suggest doing a rag quilt using this method: czcams.com/video/_Sya4HdwF-s/video.html that way you can use the photo's on cotton fabric but still get a nice ragged look. Hope this helps!

      Hi Joyce, I know what you mean. In the beginning I used to feel the same way. but then I realized that the blankets are always appreciated and as long as I give them washing instructions with the gift it is all good. So first I take some packing tape or a cheap shaver to take off the excess lint that is on the blanket after I wash it. This way it looks nice and new again. Then I let the person I have gifted the blanket to know that they should wash it with some old towels for the first few washes, after that it will stop ragging up so much. They always seem grateful for the gift and the tips. Hope this helps!

      @@TamarasJoyDIY I feel like I’m standing on my head to come up with a design. I don’t do random well, I guess. Can I match the front with the back fabric so it looks good on both sides? Or will the fringing not look right with the same fabric on both sides?

    • @TamarasJoyDIY

      Absolutely! Matching the front and back is something I have done too. Makes things much easier when it comes to keeping the design on both sides.

    I so badly need help. My grand daughters fav. holiday is Halloween. She is dealing with her 3 year old daughter having Leukemia. She h has asked me to make her a large RAG quilt with vintage fabric. She wants the solid in between. SOOOOOOO I have 16 different fabrics, 8 for the front and 8 for the back. I have the solids also. I have 16 squares of each cut. I a.m doing cotton with flannel in the middle. I don't know how to lay it out. That is going to be 16 sqaures in a row and 16 columns. I wanted to do it where the squares formed a pattern like steps going down. like the first one being the second one in second row and third in third row. I really could use any advice suggestions even pics. I want this to be special because Violet is getting ready to go through a hard dose of chemo. through the end of the year. Please quilters help me. I also am thinking of making the solids 4 inch finished size as my squares are 8 in and will be 7 finished. Thanks for any help. I have made rag quilts before but not with this many fabrics. I am an intermediate quilter

      I am so sorry to hear about your families heartbreak. A three year old should never have to go through anything like that. I will pray for her and the doctors who are caring for her. As for the blanket I would suggest laying everything out on a queen bed or open floor space to see what the pattern would look like. If you want the step down look take your stacks and start with the first row. Place one of each of the fabrics down in a row and then start over doing that again until you have laid out 16 sq. Then for the next row start your pattern one off from the previous row. Doing this will naturally make your blanket have the step down lines you are looking for. One you have laid out your pattern pin your rows together and then number your rows so they don’t get mixed up during the sewing process. Taking a picture of your laid out pattern will help too! I hope this helps! Happy sewing 🧵💕

    🙂💜💜💜 hello i just want to ask you can cotton sarongs be used to make rag quilts as i own 166 sarongs i dont wear them much any more so i need your advice please can my sarongs be put too better use thankyou

    • @TamarasJoyDIY
      @TamarasJoyDIY  Před 2 lety +1

      I don't see why not! The sarongs will no be as thick as a quilters cotton or Flannel fabric of course. But if you layer a few together I think it would end up beautiful! Or Layer one over a plain white flannel layer. I think the sarongs would rag beautifully as well! This video will help you see how to make one with cotton: czcams.com/video/_Sya4HdwF-s/video.html And this video walks you through the whole process: czcams.com/video/Fia6ApOPBIw/video.html And this video could be a fun way to do a test run with one sarong to see if the concept is what you will end up liking: czcams.com/video/5SUEKtD-iTc/video.html Hope that helps! What about fleece?? Has anyone used that thick fleece

    • @TamarasJoyDIY
      @TamarasJoyDIY  Před 2 lety

      I have seen these done in fleece. But because fleece doesn’t fray it just won’t rag out. But you can still clip it so it has a nice “ragged” look. The biggest concern I would have with fleece is that it will make the layers you see through quite thick. So maybe do one layer of fleece with a layer of flannel?

    i'm not a very experienced sewer..but how bout when attaching the binding just sew it to the one bottom layer, pull forward the upper layers. 2 of the upper layers up out of the sewing line will decrease the bulk in the binding plus, with 2 layers of binding added with 2 you kept out will be a nice thick raggy layer...does my reasoning make ant sense?

    • @TamarasJoyDIY
      @TamarasJoyDIY  Před 2 lety

      Hi Mary, I think I understand what you are saying...but the layers are already sewn together. Or are you talking about the binding layers. Either way, if you have a better way that's awesome! I will have to sit down and give your suggestion a try. Less bulk is always a plus!

    • @skinnylittlebitch7479
      @skinnylittlebitch7479 Před 2 lety

      If I'm understanding correctly, this way would mean that the binding is only attached to the bottom layer. this would created too much weight & stress on that one layer. I've seen where the sewer added a (multi layer ???) strip along all of the outside edges, sewed two seams, one at the edge & one about an inch or two in & ragged those to get the full edging. This is how I would do it.

    • @TamarasJoyDIY
      @TamarasJoyDIY  Před rokem

      Hi Kathi, the best way to have more ragging is by adding another layer of flannel to the project. But I do find that over time the ragging does disappear from some of the edges depending on the animal. Hope that helps! And happy sewing!

      To avoid that I would suggest using a cotton layer on top. But prewash the flannel and cotton fabrics ahead of time as they will shrink at different rates.
