  • Today we are checking out the wildly popular Tom's Studio LUMOS pen. A beautiful & infinitely refillable fineliner, writing & brush pen.
    Tom Gyr is a product designer and craftsman who loves using a variety of pens to create illustrations and designs. Having designed calligraphy and fountain pens for creative folks across the world full-time for over 6 years, he decided it was time to apply his knowledge to the pen he used most of all and one of the biggest culprits when it came to its disposable nature: the fineliner. And the LUMOS was born.
    In the package you get The Lumos pen, a full set of 11 Japanese-made tips, a reusable cotton core reservoir, and a sample bottle of Tom's Studio - Deep Black Ink (not waterproof).
    Lumos Pro - Refillable Multi-Tip Pen collabs.shop/zrvsag

    Can't recommend syringes enough. I use them for fountain pen refills AND cleaning. You can fill them with clean water, dip the syringe deep into the reservoir and inject water at the bottom, slowly. It pushes up and out the excess ink gently and in an orderly manner, without gushes and splashes all over the place.

    • @markyourpages

      Someone mentioned a clip for the pens which I think would be great. Something to stop the rolling that doesn’t need a separate holder. Even though it is really nice looking.

      @pilesofthings Před 2 měsíci

      Ahhh I wish I got the new nib holder! Mine is just that first one he had with the slits in the paper and I managed to somehow loose two tips 😅 I like the sleek look without a clip but maybe they can do a kaweco style clip for people who might want one? I had a pen loop on a leather journal cover that would just dig into my journal so I carefully removed it and put it on my lumos as a roll stop 😊

    I got the Mini Lumos because I couldn't escape the ads, but it's actually been one of my favorite pen purchases this year! It's so cute and little and just fits in my hand, so it's what I carry in my bag whenever I leave the house. And it's really well made, too!

    Thanks for this very comprehensive video, very appealing and thorough in all aspects about the pen as well as adressing the fears about cleaning it out etc. I have just ordered mine, going straight for the duo, I could not find the extra reservoirs on the website, sadly, Wanted to have some so I can try out shimmer inks as well (not with the fine tip though), but without some backup revervoirs that is too risky. Don't want to ruin a new pen straight from the get-go. I'm looking forward to your next videos :)

    This is so fun and cool! I can see the point of other commenters that it’s too messy, takes too much time, still uses resources, but what an insanely cool idea! Hopefully other companies will see the utility (and saving of packaging/throwing away plastic) to come up with their own original ideas (and Tom’s Studio likely improving and refining it over time…anyone remember the first iPad? It was so heavy compared to the one made the next year. I’m always willing to wait a little while and watch to see people take a great idea, show how well it works (iPad 1 was still freaking amazing compared to No iPad!) and modify with feedback from users and improvements in technology. I also like a product that makes me feel like I’m doing something positive. I’ve started buying my purses, backpacks, sling bags, etc from a company that is a small business in the US and makes all of their products with fabric created from recycled water bottles that a foundation skims off of the surface of the ocean. Not only are they fantastic products, but I feel good about supporting a small business in my country, a foundation that does something really helpful, and I like knowing that my purse took 75 water bottles to make. I feel good, the product is great quality, and it has a little more meaning. (I don’t want to advertise on your site, but if you want to know the name of the bag/luggage maker, just ask.)

  • @sloanjulia17
    @sloanjulia17 Před 2 měsíci +1

    I just ordered the duo and came across your video looking for reviews so perfect timing for me! I love fountain pen ink because I use a Hobonichi, but I'm too nervous about leaks to carry my fountain pens with me on a daily basis so I thought this would be the perfect solution. I figure one of the writing nibs will be my everyday writer with black, and then I'll use a fun color on a weekly or monthly basis on the other side! It looks fantastic and my biggest concern was the same as yours, cleaning them out, but it's great to know that they're easy to clean (and I bought some extra reservoirs off the bat because lord knows I'll find a way to mess it up 😂)

    • @markyourpages
      @markyourpages  Před 2 měsíci +1

    It's cool, but how inconvenient and tedious for those of us who want to switch colors and tips often. Also, is the overuse of water to clean, that eco-friendly? As a pen lover, I like all my pens. I think pen lovers will all want one, but it for sure won't be the last pen we buy.

    • @markyourpages

    I've been looking at this pen for a while, I'm not typically a fan of felt tip (my go to is a 0.28 gel pen) but ugh, it's SO COOL! something that wasn't clear from the video, will the metal cap fit over the brush pen on the duo, or does the silicone cover have to be used?

    • @dorianadesanto4158
      @dorianadesanto4158 Před 2 měsíci +1

      I have the do. All the different tips fit in the metal cap. The silicon cover an be used for grabbing the metal cap and nibs.

    • @markyourpages
      @markyourpages  Před 2 měsíci +1

      So I was really hesitant to use the cap over the brush pen. To me it doesn’t look like it’s going to fit, so I went with the safe option. It would def fit inside the other side of the pen though if you set it up on that side.

    • @GaryScott-pdx
      @GaryScott-pdx Před 2 měsíci +1

      All the nibs fit under the metal cap though I could see using the silicon cap on the Duo if you needed to use both ends frequently, like for a teacher that grades papers in red but wants to write notes to the student in blue ink.

    I have Lumos duo black. Overall I like it. Brush nib isn't very flexible, but I guess it's a personal preference. What I absolutely hate is how tiny threads are. I am constantly nervous to mess up the thread when cupping the pen. Also a tip: do not overtight cotton reservoir holder (part of the nib holder construction) as it will be almost impossible to unscrew it from the pen. I had to use an elastic band to unscrew it as the silicon cup that comes with the pen doesn't have enough grip.

    This is not at all the way fountain pens work. They have no absorbent sponge style ink "reservoir". Also fountain pens are the OG refillable pen with interchangeable nibs, and I much prefer writing and sketching with fountain pens. And yes as others mention, if you prefer fine-liner style pens like micron, well microns are in fact refillable. Also, there have been refillable brush pens for ages as well, I have a number of them from Kuretake, Pentel, etc. Don't misunderstand, this looks like a functional and well made pen, but it's quite expensive and not by any means a groundbreaking idea. BTW fountain pen users know that a touch of ammonia in a water soak helps clean out the ink.

    • @markyourpages
      @markyourpages  Před měsícem

      I don't think I misused the definition here. Capillary action is when liquids can flow in a narrow space, even against gravity, so it's what allows ink to flow from the reservoir to the nib in a fountain pen. It's the same action that is happening here - ink flowing up, against gravity, to feed the nibs. The material is different - but the action is the same.
      That is a great tip on the ammonia in the water - that isn't something I have heard before. I'll have to give it a look and try. Thanks for your feedback and ideas on other options for pen users.

      The advantage of the Lumos over a fountain pen is that you can change inks without wasting any ink like you do with a fountain pen if you need/want to change inks before you finish a full load. I just pop out the reservoir place it in a small jar with a tight lid and put a new reservoir in the pen and ink it up.

    There is a big problem with these pens. They are like rabbits. I bought one a while ago and it multiplies so I now have three and am looking to buy another this year. Obviously, I give them my seal of approval. I use mine more frequently than I use my fountain pens. I don’t care for shimmer inks so that’s not a problem for me. I will say that if you like sheening inks these are not the best pen as one of the requirements for a good sheen is a wet ink. The fiber tips while great for writing don’t lay down a real wet line. You will still get some sheening but not the amount you get from a fountain pen. I also purchased a handful of reservoirs so that when I want to change the ink I don’t have to wash the reservoir to change ink. I do clean and reuse them just not immediately. Tom’s didn’t have the vials to store the reservoir in when I bought my extras. I’ll have to order a few when I purchase my next pen. I would recommend buying a handful of your favorite nibs as they do wear out if you write/draw on rough paper. If you’re not heavy handed even the smallest nibs will write for a long time on smooth paper. But this isn’t a problem unique to the Lumos. I’ve ruined the nib on more than one fine liner drawing on rough watercolor paper. If you have any questions you can contact me on instagram at garylscott.

      I am sure I could have run that water lower and gotten the same effect. Usually, if you are keeping that same color, you would just refill without cleaning it. Or use a different color. I would portable say that we are more likely to waste on many other things then the amount that we would need to clean this every now and again. I don’t disagree with you, but i don’t think that it’s a deal breaker for me personally knowing that I will only really clean this nib every now and again.

      The pen is made from anodized aluminum so the only plastic is the reservoir encapsulation. So there is significantly less plastic in the Lumos than even a moderately expensive pen. As for cost if you use nice fountain pens the Lumos and Duo are at the lower end of the price range. I like using mine when I’m away from home as I’d rather lose a $100 pen than potentially a $1,000 pen.
