afroman esposito perhaps a safety period if the first sowing gets killed by a late frost. That gives time to replant and not run out in the stockroom.
Personally I love onions, both fresh eating and cooked. And many times I use them as a filler in dishes to cheaply increase the volume without adding carbs.
I would calculate 5 onions per week per adult (age 13+) and 3 onions per week per child (age 5-12) and anyone under age 5 gets to eat leftovers ;)
I would also add a 10 week overlap between storage and harvest

I grow Redwing, Spanish and shallots. I figured out a great tip after a couple of years of growing 250 a year. I do green transplants into the garden in March. They grow larger with more irrigation. I leave them in until after they die down and completely cure in the garden. The tip is to turn off the irrigation to onion rows once it's evident that they are almost all bent over. Then you pull perfectly cured onions right out of the garden.

@@michellereichert9420 No, I started the onions from green transplants, from dixondale farms.
I am sure seeds and sets work, but to get the largest onions, transplants work best in northern climates.

Haha.. I just came into my house for a cuppa after sowing a new tray of onion seeds and I see this. I like to have onions in my garden year round. Given onions are daylength sensitive there are friends closer to the equator who are not able to grow onion bulbs and make do with just long onions. Just as good in my opinion. I agree on the space advantages in growing them, as well as the ease of having plenty of them for fresh eating and/or storage. I'm lucky enough to be able to grow both storage onions and spring onions with little effort and the weather here allows me to have spring onions all year round. I have a few spots I like to transfer or plant a selected type in to in order to save seeds too, meaning I can also easily collect plenty of fresh seeds from their abundant and beautiful round flower heads, which the bees love, for new crops for the next few years and also delicious onion sprouts. Yum.

I don't know a lot about growing onions, so I found this video informative. Especially your approach for using the "clumping" method. As you described, your approach is to remove the largest onions from each clump to free up room for the rest of the clump to bulb out. My limited understanding for harvesting onions (for best storage) is to harvest the bulbs when the leaves fall over and start drying out. With the clumping method, you recommend removing bulbs before the tops fall over. Doesn't this affect the long-term storage of the bulbs that you harvest early?
    And thanks for posting. Cheers.

That is good. They tip over to pinch off the opening so fruit flies or rot does not set into the center of the onion. At that point cut off irrigation or quit watering. Let them dry in the ground until there is no green. Then pull them out and dust them off. They are cured. The only time to pull them otherwise is to eat as you go or if you are about to get a ton of rain for an extended period.
