    John Scofield said something I'll always remember well, "creativity is something you had before you picked up the guitar". Shawn's style is creative with straight forward intervalic concepts that don't get lost in complicated theory. Great lesson.

    I love this. The bit about not always starting on 1 - as important as side-slipping and the sweet slides. Your tune for the APE is just so wonderful. While so original, and fresh, it has things that remind oF Phil Keaggy - and Mary Spender.

    Hi Shawn, starting your musical idea on other beats(or offbeats) besides 1 gives you so many possibilities and can be used as springboards for new ideas. I'm glad you covered this because not enough people use it.

    As always, great playing Shawn. Playing in a blues/rock context in A as you are, one way I think about the notes in an Eb triad is that two of the notes, the Eb and the G, are coming from the A blues scale, leaving the Bb as the only “out” note. Great stuff!

    Excellent lesson Shawn. I especially like how you addressed phrasing. Many, myself included, find this to be the hardest thing to get a handle on, when trying to get into more sophisticated solo phrasing. Listening to a lot of Jazz helps. ;)

    This is great! Watched some of your Tone King demos, and noticed you often add non-pentatonic licks right near the end of a progression; was literally *just* asking someone "WTF is he doing there?" 'cause it didn't seem like you were following any standard scale/theory patterns. Thanks for the insight into your creative process!

    Right on. I see how your mind works. I kinda look at Eb/A like Am7b5. Bb Melodic minor licks also sound cool to me over an A7 as long as I bring it back to the blues after going "outside".

    ....actually beautiful played slow these lines are very reminiscent off Bernstein West side story score..or Twilight Zone music in the episodes Some Star Trek etc...that SUPER KOOL 50S AND 60S MODERN JAZZ ...great video! Its actually super melodic "outside playing" without getting to heady into serious jazz Kats like Holdsworth etc

    Triads a tri-tone = very diminished. Shawn, found you looking at pedals. You're playing is incredible, tasty and fun to listen too! By the way, you caused me to buy a The Dude pedal! I tried to convince myself to get the GTO and the Majestic but my Carlton addiction made me wait on those. Thanks man!

    I watched a video you did with Bret Papa a while back and since then Ive had a hard time finding you as I couldnt remember your name. I remembered however that you played some killer outside licks over blues a blues progression (145) I believe.
