- This is a lesson based around an "outside" riff I came up with. Use shapes and scales you already know.

Shawn Tubbs "Demolition" album. A collection of short but sweet guitar jams. shawntubbs.bandcamp.com/releases
Shawn .. Demolition is awesome ! Thanks for all you do and sharing your skills !
I cannot stop listening to it.
John Scofield said something I'll always remember well, "creativity is something you had before you picked up the guitar". Shawn's style is creative with straight forward intervalic concepts that don't get lost in complicated theory. Great lesson.
Great lesson Shawn! More cool triad licks please!
rj u are amazing
Thanks, RJ I really appreciate it man!
Everybody please give Shawn a round of applause for this lesson! Thank you Shawn... please do more lessons!!
Thanks Shawn, i love your approach to this sort of stuff. Thanks so much for sharing.
Amazing Shawn! You need to do more of this!
Awesome lesson, Shawn. Thanks for that. Love your outside playing!
Great Lesson Shawn! Please keep em coming, I dig hearing your process.
Great video,I hope there are more of these to come ,thank you
Probably my best week ever: this video and just bought your album yesterday which is just beautiful! You rule, man.
Loving this video too! Great to see how you approach certain lines over chords, best to you man
Thanks Shawn, love your playing, your tone, and appreciate your generous and clear instruction.
You’re a great teacher Shawn! Love the approach 👍 more of these vids
Thanks Shawn! Our community appreciates what you do to help us enjoy playing. Truly grateful!
Definitely a 2019 rut buster I needed desperately. Just amaz balls how simplicity is over looked but so freakin cool and satisfying. You win and now a guitar god as I see it.
More please!!!
🎸🤓🎸
Shawn!!! You're amazing....please more of this!!! Of course without leaving out your gear review videos!!! LOOOOVE YOuR PLAYING!!!
Hi Shawn, please give us more of this beautiful stuff!!!!
Lightbulb moment! It only takes a couple of outside notes in the right place to add spice. Awesome as always, thanks man.
OMG more outside concepts please! You and Jimmy herring are two of my favorites when it comes to outside lines always a pleasure to hear!
Thanks for another great riff Shawn!
My favorite guitarist of all times . Shawn knows his stuff ! A bad dude.
Great video, it’s awesome hearing your thought process behind some of those killer lines!! I’d love to see more videos like this!
Jake Bisognin me too
Times three ;-)
Always the best TONE! Awesome man
I love this. The bit about not always starting on 1 - as important as side-slipping and the sweet slides. Your tune for the APE is just so wonderful. While so original, and fresh, it has things that remind oF Phil Keaggy - and Mary Spender.
Very well done. I learned something today. Thanks a lot!
Guitar teacher: Hey! Come on folks, it`s not rocket science.
Engineer teacher: Hey! Come on folks, it`s not music theory.
This is the kind of thing I was hoping you'd do. Fantastic! Thank you
Great content Shawn and superb playing as always. You rock dude 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
LOVE this Shawn! Keep em' coming! Time to study!
Awesome video! It assisted me a lot!
What a wonderful lesson!
This is cool as the day is long!! Thanks Shawn!
Superb lesson!!
Excellent lesson Shawn. Thank you so much for this! 😊🙏 really appreciate the way you explained the simplicity behind it. I’ve been experimenting with it all over the weekend and those outside phrases are starting to come! Yay! Have an excellent day man! 😊🙏🤟
Very cool lesson thanks for sharing
listening to your album now. and will be buying. killer stuff.. will be great for driving on road trips. keep the ears interested and finding new stuff every listen. awesome work !!!
Thanks so much!!!
Awesome and easy to understand. You’re a great teacher!
GOLD! Thank you, Shawn. You’re one of the best!
Was just talking about this on another Live Stream today. So cool, thank you!
Ya, great video, Thank you for taking the time to explain! Luv this channel!
Simply Amazing ... Thank you!!
Thanks man. That's one i'm gonna remember. Plus, using chord shapes as a guide is really helpful!
Hi Shawn, starting your musical idea on other beats(or offbeats) besides 1 gives you so many possibilities and can be used as springboards for new ideas. I'm glad you covered this because not enough people use it.
much love for this. Thank you very much.
It’s nice to be able to fit in the half steps between regular pentatonic...awesome
One of the most interesting players to listen to on CZcams. Great vid Shawn!
Great video! It helped me a lot!
Thanks brother that was great. I used to visit you and your brother at Mesa Boogie in Fountain Valley many many years ago. I am so blessed by your playing. God bless.
As always, great playing Shawn. Playing in a blues/rock context in A as you are, one way I think about the notes in an Eb triad is that two of the notes, the Eb and the G, are coming from the A blues scale, leaving the Bb as the only “out” note. Great stuff!
Awesome as always...
This is perfect!! More lesson videos, please!!
Pearls! You're giving out pearls here and players need to recognize that. Great recommendations for creative phrasing too.
Love your lesson videos. Still have Demolition on constant rotation!!
This kind of playing is my bread and butter. Hearing shades of Marc Ribot and Fripp in your phrases. Awesome!
This is gold I tell ya
JUST what I needed to break me out of my rut....THANKS SHAWN
Hey Shawn: thanks so much for sharing your tricks for tempting to approach your awesome playing style !! \m/
Yup. This is great man!
Excellent lesson Shawn. I especially like how you addressed phrasing. Many, myself included, find this to be the hardest thing to get a handle on, when trying to get into more sophisticated solo phrasing. Listening to a lot of Jazz helps. ;)
Thanks Shawn. Great Playing and Great Lessons. Have been in a Deep rut lately.
Thanks for the lesson!
Great vid! Really useful...cheers from Italy
cool great lesson
Awesome Lesson man!
Oh the irony! I spent the last 40 years practicing playing IN key, only to find out to be cool I needed to learn how to play OUT again. Thanks for the tips! Great video, and tasty chops as always.
Awesome , Yesterday I was going to ask if you could make some video about your technique or lesson, you've read my mind.
That tele sounds ridiculous ! What a great sound and player.
Gen-I-Us! Killer playing
Great lick! Thanx!
Nice riffs.
Shawn, this is great. I suggest you consider putting together a compilation of these lessons and offering them for a fee. I know I would pay. Great stuff.
thanks for the lesson Shawn - I hafta shed this with some brain nutrition. ;) Also good luck on your new album - lookin' forward to it ! Tee.
Awesome thanks 👍🏻👏
Amazing!!!
Thanks Robert!!
More lessons please! !!!
just what I needed :)
Yes, by all means please drop a lesson any time you have the will.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!😍😍😍😍😍
\m/ we need more of this! \m/ awesome!
opening thing reminds me of Jimmy Herring so much :) great vid Shawn!
Fantastic lesson! I also bought your soundslice package!
Thanks so much!!
Great lesson. You are one outstanding player Shawn. Definitely one of my favorites. Would like to see you do some hangouts sometime.
Ah Sensei Tubbs, thank you for the lesson
This is great! Watched some of your Tone King demos, and noticed you often add non-pentatonic licks right near the end of a progression; was literally *just* asking someone "WTF is he doing there?" 'cause it didn't seem like you were following any standard scale/theory patterns. Thanks for the insight into your creative process!
Really great hearing this stuff Shawn, love your approach!!
Right on. I see how your mind works. I kinda look at Eb/A like Am7b5. Bb Melodic minor licks also sound cool to me over an A7 as long as I bring it back to the blues after going "outside".
Thanks so much Brett!
Thanks for this great lesson! It's funny to me that you associate the Am7 triad with Robben Ford; to me that shape screams "Purple Haze Intro"! Would love to see more lessons like this, you have so many great insights to share!
Thanks Shawn ! Gawdd, what a cool door you've opened for me. I've applied that using my neck p.u. (Anderson H1) clean, percussive in a funk shuffle. Dang, you're smart !!
Anderson Cobra?
@@ShawnTubbs Hollow T. Way back in time you got me hooked on Tom''s guitars. In fact you sold me my first Anderson...it was a Cobra. Sold it several years ago...hate myself for it,
@@boblstclair4023 Oh man, I really miss my Cobra as well. I had an amber burst. I miss it as well and am hoping to one day acquire another!
....actually beautiful played slow these lines are very reminiscent off Bernstein West side story score..or Twilight Zone music in the episodes Some Star Trek etc...that SUPER KOOL 50S AND 60S MODERN JAZZ ...great video! Its actually super melodic "outside playing" without getting to heady into serious jazz Kats like Holdsworth etc
Thanks for the lesson!
Triads a tri-tone = very diminished. Shawn, found you looking at pedals. You're playing is incredible, tasty and fun to listen too! By the way, you caused me to buy a The Dude pedal! I tried to convince myself to get the GTO and the Majestic but my Carlton addiction made me wait on those. Thanks man!
Thx Shawn, I'm all for not thinking too much. I hate thinking.
Thinking makes my thinker hurt!
I watched a video you did with Bret Papa a while back and since then Ive had a hard time finding you as I couldnt remember your name. I remembered however that you played some killer outside licks over blues a blues progression (145) I believe. Anyways,,, Im glad I finally found this YT today,,, I am Subscribed and now looking forward to more of your outside the box lessons. Please go easy on us lol,,,, SUBSCRIBED !!!!!
Hey Shawn, I just watched the Letterman footage. It might not be what you wrote but what you played was stellar. 99% of guitar players wish we could play those licks.
Thanks very much Ron!!
nice...!
thanks
Man, that's a beautiful tele copy!
Thanks! Yeah, Suhr do a good Tele style guitar for sure!
They Surh do!
Killer playing, Shawn! Love all the videos and the insight you give to each of us!
Ever any thought into a solo album?
I'm working on the idea of getting one done. It's expensive and will take a minute but I do really want to put one together.
@@ShawnTubbs make it quick people are starving out here and I enjoyed the video you were talking about Django it blows me away every time I watch it thanks man you are a amazing player
I hear you on it being expensive!I'm glad its floating around in your head though! Well, I will definitely be continuing to enjoy your videos and will definitely purchase your album when it comes out in the future!@@ShawnTubbs
Awesome lesson Shawn! Playing outside adds a whole range of possibilities
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing Shawn. Who needs boxes anyways? :)
Yes ! More Lessons ! Tell Us what's the pedal behind you to your left?
Thanks for watching! That pedal made by Grace Designs and it's called the Alix. Killer acoustic guitar pedal.
