Riot have apparently decided to reveal and release champions on a biweekly schedule again because, I don't know, they're trying to rob me of all my free time.
Anyway, let's have a chat about one of the longest-teased champions (technically) in all of League of Legends, and see how she holds up.

I think Riot may have scaled back on the “monster” element because it’s usually difficult for black female characters to exist as desirable, well-written, and present in video games. There’s also the real world stigmatization of us as more masculine and even less human (it’s even worse when you’re dark skinned). So while I’m not one to give Riot too much credit, I‘m thankful they scaled back on the monster element for her design.

    • @blu5018
      @blu5018 Před rokem +6

Honestly, at that point they should just make good character designs for black women that are attractive if that's their worry. They are clearly able to make strong, attractive, and complex black characters because we got Ekko, Medarda, her mother, and Sevika.
I'm asian and a lot of the media I see from the country I live in with a large Asian population portrays asian women as hyper sexualized, half English speaking, one night stands or the stereotypical dragon Lady. Asian men are viewed as unattractive with personalities revolving around math and science or fighting.
I would much rather have something from love death and robots where an asian woman in prostitution becomes a "monster" rather than representation for clicks. That or an asian man becomes the unattractive monster that the believes the modern world portrays him as.
As such, I'd argue that rather than settling for a character who was made to make a ton of money, set the expectation higher because riot makes plenty of money and I think it's completely fair to ask them to be better as a consumer. I don't mean shit on them, just set higher expectations.

@@blu5018 I agree trope subversion is also powerful, but senna isn’t really a flawed design. Yes she could look more ghostly, but I’m perfectly fine with the story her design currently tells and most of the other skin line iterations it spawns. That said, I totally get your side of it: when one lives in a culture where your race is fetishized (depending on the way the sexualize you) it can be refreshing to see the woman in question break free of it. Senna and Yan (from that LDR episode) both do this, but in different ways that respond to the stereotypes forced on each of them.

@@dgtor_official I have no problems with Senna honestly, more just the general statement of having lower expectations because an extremely profitable and successful company can't meet good ones, if that makes sense.
I don't like patting riot on the back for meeting the floors requirement of non-racist designs and being, not culturally sensitive, but aware that it exists. I'd rather just say, "make better characters" and congratulate them on good representations of minorities. Especially with their recent lawsuit I think more fans need to push companies to just be better and reward with engagement when they do. It feels like a participation trophy for keeping up with the times when the best you can do is an attractive black woman who isn't an embodiment of stereotypes but a kinda meh character overall. Arcane proved they can do better.

I am glad they made her a hot babe. Scaring her up is not necessary. She is not common at all being a rare dark skinned character in video games. I don't usually encounter this hot babe criticism until a beautiful black female character is designed and white characters are used in supporting argument, but people don't do a dedication video to criticizing white hot babe characters--just toning down the skimpy booby armor. The designers took their time to develop this beautiful black female character and I am enjoying that effort.

the character designs this time TB come with an asterisk. You're looking at senna from the lens of just character design which is fair, however you must also look at the context in which senna is launching and to quote a movie I've never seen, "we live in a society".
In League of Legends there are many MANY skinny hot fantasy babes majority of whom are fair-skinned with long flowing locks. While Senna's design may not be unique when looking at the roster of female characters in League, it does become unique when you refine what it is you are looking at. Senna, if I'm not mistaken, comes out as 1 of 2 black women (the other being Illaoi, and no, Karma is Indian or something). Illaoi the only other black woman in the game walks around in stark opposition to conventional beauty norms. She's big, she's tall, she does hit from afar or strike from the shadows, no she wants a 'kick in the head' and an epic brawl. Illaoi was a massive departure from league of legends standard hot babe. However, Illaoi has problems, none of which her fault, see she was the only black woman introduced to a roster of 44 (at the time) women, and of all the *human women, she was the big departure, not only in skin but in physicality as well. Again none of this is bad HOWEVER no matter how well-meaning a design decision may be, it will ALWAYS have to exist in our world as well, and our world has a very marred history with representation and depictions of black people and stereotypes that are associated with them. Illaoi, unfortunately, fell into so many of the ones for black women she was almost a joke, and I understand if you don't personally know them or notice them you're (I'm assuming here) a white male, hell I didn't see them and I'm black, but they do exist and the people who do see them are those on the intersectionality of the representation problems and this time it was black women. Whose tropes include, Being seen as intimidating, overly masculine, not feminine, failing to conform to societal beauty standards (which are overwhelmingly white, lets be real there's a reason why every time a yordle or celestial gets a more human form its a Caucasian woman), black women are said to be over sexual, and sexually dominant, some racist ideas even say that one must 'break/dominate' a black woman and get them to submit. None of these things are things that I would've clocked on to had it not been for my black sister who actively researches black womanhood and (surprise) lives as a black woman and has to face these stereotypes on the daily. Illaoi, basically fell into each and every single one of these tropes without fail, she even fell for the "im a strong independent black woman" trope as well which reinforces that sensitivity is something foreign to black women and all that they are is sass attitude and a readiness to throw down.
pulling this back onto Senna, while as a female league of legends character design she may fall into the pitfalls of all the others but, because of the context in which she exists he design succeeds where the others may fail. Senna actively breaks the same common tropes that Illaoi fell into, as a design Senna is (surprisingly (unsurprisingly)) one of the few visually dark-skinned women in a video game with unapologetically black features who is also attractive while not exuding a purely sexual energy like so many other dark skin black women in videogames, in fact the only other black woman in a video game who comes to mind who exists in a similar state as Senna would be Vivienne from dragon age, whom from what I've heard is an amazing character. Senna, to that regard, stands in as something of a unique character design in the grand scheme of black video game characters in that rather than being another sympathetic racially ambiguous black woman whose conventionally attractive or a hulking overblown stereotype. She stands as an attractive visibly black woman, in a relationship where shes been allowed to have her sensitivities and be loved back. She's a woman with a past and rather than having that past steel her heart to everything and anything, rather than having that past make her "the angry black woman", that past has instead made her more empathetic and wanting to help others.
this is getting long now but tl;dr senna is good cause league (and video games) need more than monsters and hulks as black female representation

Your bringing up of Batman as an example of fridged characters to motivate the hero made me realize something. One of the Batman stories’s most iconic features is the Bat Family. Batman frequently adopts orphaned children and trains them to fight crime like he does, because becoming a vigilante was his way of coping with the loss of his parents and he doesn’t want these orphans to be on their own like he was (if you ignore Alfred). If you remove the killing of the Wayne’s from Batman’s backstory, would he even form the Bat Family? Would he become Batman at all? Not all superheroes are orphans, but it’s a common trope for a reason.

12:12: That said, there are definitely types of trauma you _can_ recognize. Physical violence often leaves visible scars, for instance. I'm not sure what kind of metaphysical scars would be left by the extreme metaphysical violence Senna went through, but I imagine they'd be hard to miss.
Senna wasn't traumatized by the metaphysical equivalent of sexual assault or emotional abuse or something similar; she was traumatized by the metaphysical equivalent of attempted murder, kidnapping, and unlawful imprisonment. (Also the physical equivalent of one of them.) Some of that should leave _some_ kind of visible scar.
7:05: ...So, do those souls live on inside Senna (and her cannon), or did she basically eat those souls to reincarnate into the world? Those two might only differ on a metaphysical level, but 'd argue it's an important difference nonetheless.
13:00: I've seen better visual representations of "she's just putting up a front" than "literally just design her as if nothing's wrong". So even if that's the intent, they took the lazy route.
0:30: The sketch comedy wasn't _that_ bad. SNL would reject your skit, but that has more to do with content than anything. I could see Monty Python workshopping something like that.
3:55: What would the fantasy, non-copyright-infringing equivalent of proton packs be?
7:35: The juxtaposition makes me unclear whether you're making fun of the lack of tension in Lucien and Senna's relationship or the expected lack of tension. Maybe I should read about these characters outside the videos on this channel...

@T B Skyen, for someone who constantly expresses his desire for character design to be more represenative of the character, you seem to complain alot about how you do not get told details that one can infer from firstimpression looks.
Kai'sa for example, became an apex predator in the void with a symboitic (not parasitic) entity. if she were to look half starved, i can only immagine it would be partially the will of the symbiote if it had a dominant ego to weaken its host. but you are most upset over the fact that the character's health does not reflect the hardship of their journey, but the degree of the success they earned.
part of character deisgn is how much do the creators need to explicitly tell the audience, and how much we can judge from detialls they decided were not important enough to spell out to avoid confusion.

I like Howard Schatz' photoseries "Athlete" as a visual demonstration of how narrow female character design in gaming is when it comes to visually representing power and strength: twitter.com/tbskyen/status/1138602582228852736
Kai'sa's character design is not created to look powerful, or dangerous, or alien or tough, or anything else that might be reasonably associated with "extra dimensional symbiote apex predator."
She's designed to look SEXY, because video game character design tends to conflate "empowerment" with "being hot." It does this across the board, for male and female characters, but it does it far, FAR more often and far more dogmatically for female characters, and my criticism is that it chokes out more interesting options.

But overall a very good and enjoyable video. Ilike your unique qy of narrating her story and this video conent is also something i have not really seen on youtube. There are probably some who do this as well on youtube, but i have not come into cantact with them.

I don't get why you want her to have visuals scars, and advance staged of death. She made a body with the power of the mist, it's not truly the same Senna, and for a broken character the least she could do is give to herself a human appearance rather than a monster, she does not need to be sexy as she does not need to be monster/dead like, she is more of a Ghost than a goul (for me)

Senna should have had a weight support exoskeleton. Not only would it add some design variety to make her body design more than just a generic sexy babe, it would lend itself to that as well as every other aspect of her character.
The shape of it could easily be designed to accentuate her legs, hips, and waist. The exo-SKELETON, emphasis, SKELETON, could fit into the undead spectre elements by simply coloring it white and i really hope this part explains itself. And lastly, it would help sell the weight of the weapon. This absolute behemoth of a cannon being supported by this mechanical structure would really sell it as something so outrageously heavy that a mortal person can't even begin to hope to wield it.
It's an element I think could go far, anyway.

On the topic of Senna I have a hypothesis regarding her curse. I think she’s being inhabited by what’s left of the Ruined King’s wife. She was originally made “immortal” before the king attempted to undo it. “Its spark shone brighter within her than in anyone else-she’d been infected with it when she first encountered the wreckage that brought the Harrowing. There, she’d been touched by a powerful, lingering soul, given its unnatural life…”

People don’t really count illioi, so are they going to take the chance and make SENNA of all hyped up people rugged and tired looking? Honestly imo they made a smart move there lol. It wasn’t as bad as Overwatch where a new Latina or white character would be Released and all of Twitter and tumblr would up and arms the second they are teased, but they probably didn’t want to fuck up Senna of all champions.

    • @TBSkyen
      @TBSkyen  Před 4 lety +2

      "Sex sells"
This is not true. Sex only sells things that are nominally related to sex - i.e. you can sell a sportscar with sex, or perfume or clothes or body spray. Sex does not sell a forklift, or a tractor, or washing machines or toilet paper.
Does sex sell game characters, then? Sometimes, but it depends strongly on context. "Sex sells" as a truism is very unhelpful.
