This version is so superior to the hit record, I have a new appreciation for it. Tim, if you want to play violin, then go for it - what’s stopping you? I’ve played guitar for 48 years and can tell you, once you’ve learned one stringed instrument, the others are easier to pick up. The first (and only) time I picked up a banjo, I was able to play Oh Susanna. Same premises on both, just different notes and strings.

Such a great song. Annie Lennox did a great cover of it. My second favorite Procol Harum song is Conquistador.

Not for me but then again I'm probably too big a Procol harum fan to appreciate the many other versions of this all time classic

Beautiful song, this was amazing live recording. Thank you for sharing, and by your reaction I’d recommend you get that violin. There is music in your soul.

Great reaction, Tim. I was 16 when Gary Brooker first performed that song and 39 years later , whoa the great voice. Sadly Gary died Feb. 2022 about a month after first seeing this video. Before he formed Procul Harem with Robin Trower his band was "The Paramount's" they had one record a cover of American soul classic "Poison Ivy" and somewhere on CZcams Gary did some fun covers including Ray Charles' "Hit the Road, Jack." Those British rockers really listened to great American blues!

I'm sure that every member of the band (though not the orchestra) can play this song dead asleep with both arms behind their backs; it's far and away their biggest (only?) hit, and it's an absolute rock legend of the sixties. I'm so glad to see it's still appreciated by new audiences!

Now, listen to their *original* video, when he was very, very young. It is short but great, and its interesting to see them come up to this, from back when they were such a young group.

This song gave me goosebumps. It reminds me of my father when he came home from Vietnam. Booker's voice and the music is so powerful to me.
