  • The National Park Service has announced that it plans to cut down over 150 of the roughly 2,500 cherry blossom trees around the Tidal Basin and West Potomac Park in anticipation of construction of an upgraded sea wall to guard against flooding. In recent years, rising sea levels and warming temperatures have threatened the cherry trees, as portions of the walkway around the deteriorating Tidal Basin regularly flood with several inches of water. The $113 million, three-year project is set to begin in late spring and early summer. | March 14-19, 2024 | #GettyImages #GettyImagesNews #CherryBlossoms #WashingtonDC #CherryTrees #Flooding
