When this song came out I was surprised that a metal band (or anyone for that matter) would do a song about us Native people and an English band at that. Only person I knew of at the time that did this was Johnny Cash. No other American person or band wrote a song like this. Needless to say Iron Maiden is one of my favorite bands.

Thanksgiving was made a holiday by Abraham lincoln. It was inspired by a letter from Winslow depicting the first harvest celebration dinner in the first year of the Plymouth colony. A plague had beset the colony milky 78 percent of it's women. The Indians weren't invited until they showed up doing their diplomacy rounds as they did with other tribes after harvest. The idea of giving thanks for what you have and celebrating life is not evil nor marred by american indian history. It is not an Indian holiday taken by Americans . Plenty of harvest celebrations took place year after year across the world. People can demonize our ancestors all they want but we wouldn't be here without them nor would we have the values we have today learning from mistakes in the past

Iron Maiden have never been as huge in the USA as they are in the rest of the world. It's a little strange really because across large parts of Europe, Central and Southern America, Iron Maiden are the undisputed kings of heavy metal. In my opinion, this difference stems from Maiden being a British band. This fact alone would not usually be an issue, however, Maiden's songs often make reference to British poetry, wars and history, while their stage shows include excerpts from Winston Churchill's iconic WW2 speech and their are plenty of Union Jack flags in the stage props. I feel like the average American metal fan just doesn't culturally connect with it. Metallica and Megadeth, who incidentally are both American, may be more popular in the US, but for sheer talent, the variety and complexity of their music, the storytelling, and the consistent quality of their albums (even to the current day), Iron Maiden are head and shoulders above anything else in the heavy metal genre.

I'm tired of everyone being down on Thanksgiving. When the Pilgrams came they lived in peace with the local tribe for like 50 years. It wasn't until Spain, England and France saw them as a weeker race and decided to take their land. All the bad things happened later. The Pilgrams would not have survived without the help of the native people

The original lyric was ‘the only good injun is dead’ but Bruce, the singer, changed it to ‘the only good injun is Tame or tamed (my ears aren’t that good and I don’t have the lyrics in front of me)
So they were well aware of the tender subject matter and examined each word carefully. I think it both brings awareness and states what happened. I don’t think it whitewashes history. I don’t think it hides anything. I think both sides are presented truthfully. I think the band’s lyrics clearly are sympathetic to the Native American. The white man from across the sea is shown in a pretty damning and negative light.
Still... They really just tell a historical story and let the listener take from it what they will. If the band has or had an agenda with this song then it was slight and yet morally sound.
    It’s a fantastic song.
One of their few semi ‘commercial’ endeavors, which accounts for the shorter solo and bridge section. Most of their material was never considered mainstream radio friendly at the time. Those awesome bridges and solos take up too much time for a 3n1/2 time slot on the radio.
All the more reason to love and respect Maiden.
    Up the Irons!!!

I was 14 or so the first time I heard this. "White man came across the sea, he brought us pain and misery". I didn't know what to make of it, but it was a white man, in a very white band, singing it, so it definitely caught my attention. Turns out that macabre imagery aside, Maiden was quite a literate band, and I ate up all that stuff like there was no tomorrow.
Back in the day I used Type II Chrome 90 minute tapes. It was Maiden, who released a series of records that were 51 minutes long (the most you could fit on a single side of a 90 minute tape) that got me to move up to Type IV Metal tapes. Amazing.

( indians also gave us the name white man and white people ) fights broke out between them. after a while though pilgrims seemed harmless enough only a few settlement and they lived much like the indians did, so they became friends. once they became friends they started trading with each other, and one day they decided to celebrate there friendship with a feast. and both sides gave food and offerings to the feast. both sides were also thankful to have piece between one another. so they called the feast thanks giving, and they lived happily ever after. well, for about the next 50 years or so until the white man flooded the land and decided they wanted it all. but that's a story for another time.

Speaking about Iron Maiden giving history lessons: Aces High (Battle of Britain), The Trooper (about the Crimean war, but more about warfare in general), Alexander the Great (self explanatory) etc. Also a lot of Iron Maiden songs are based on literary material: Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Coleridge), The Phantom of the Opera, Murder on the Rue Morgue (E.A.Poe), The Flight of the Icarus (Greek mythology), Revelations (Bible) etc.
