[tutorial] Pushing Blofeld toward microWAVE

I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours... In this video, I show how to bring the sound of the Blofeld to the direction of a microWAVE (and maybe a bit PPG). Many people say that the Blofeld sounds too soft and HiFi but there are some tricks. Moreover, I explain general things about wavetables are their usage.

I can only echo the other comments - a superb instructional video, just like all the others in this series. Sets the standard for this sort of video on CZcams! Waldorf should put a DVD of these lessons in the box of every Blofeld they sell.
Thank goodness for your Blofeld tutorials. I would be lost in this world with out them. God knows how long I would have had to stumble around this thing, before I really knew it.
I really appreciate the tips and tricks with the Blofeld. I hit an inspirational plateau with it within a few weeks of obtaining the unit, and these videos inspire me to push myself harder.

Great tutorial thanks for the wavetable explanation and how to use the filter envelope. ive had my Blofeld for about 6 months and was finding it difficult to get to use the filter envelope after watching your tutorial ive figured out out how to use it now, great, also ive picked up a few more programming tips of your vid so a big thumbs up. Excellent. Thanks for describing the details of the wavetables. The Blofeld is my first Waldorf and the manual doesn't do a good job of covering this stuff. There's a fantastic amount to play with with just what's shown here. Awesome bit of kit!

This tutorial is excellent. I used to own a PPwave 2.3 and remember the sound of it. From this video I feel that I can recapture the essence of the PPG on the Blofeld with no problem. Gonna buy one soon. I do have the MW II XTk which I love but the Blofeld covers some other ground.
Did you get a Blofeld? How does it compare to the MW2 XT? Do one need the XT then anymore? You can it make sounds the blofeld can not?

Your videos are awesome! Thanks so much for taking the time to do them. I've had a Blofeld for years, but never really explored it deeply as I have a pathological hatred of menu diving - i'm an old skool 1-knob-per-function kind of guy, which is why most of my other gear is Moog/DSI. I'm going to fire up the old Blofeld and explore it some more. One of the main reasons I bought it was to cover the FM and Wavetable bases that my other synths don't do.
It's rare to find YT content with such in-depth knowledge! - wondering if you actually work or worked for Waldorf? ;-)

I realise that the Blofeld is a very popular synth, which is why I'm amazed that Waldorf hasn't released a keenly priced successor in the past 3-4 years. They've just decided to add much more expensive products to their portfolio. A great shame really. I'd love to see a replacement, with a bigger screen and more buttons/knobs/sliders to make the interface more user-friendly.
I had a choice between the Blofeld or a used Microwave II. I went with the Microwave II.
It's hard to describe but that "sound on the end" between the two both sound rather different.

Thank you for this very informative video. About the overall tonal character of the Blofeld, I feel I should ask:
Most of the patches in demos online sound not bright at all. It might be my personal impression, but to me they tend to sound muffled? Especially with the wavetable oscillators, I think. Any advice on creating harsh screaming sounds with lots of high frequences? I really feel, when I try to create a lead sound, I cannot dare to touch the filter cutoff, it just instantly kills the sound completely. Brilliance does not make much difference to me in this regard, unfortunately.
Yeah, the brilliance setting does sometimes just subtle changes to the sound. For "harsh screaming sounds" try wavetable oscillators together with oscillator sync (OSC 2 can be synched to 3) and maybe a bit crusher effect.
I honestly suspect you know more about the Blofeld than anyone. I watch and re-watch these videos and always learn new things. Will you do more Blofeld videos?

Two more interesting ideas from the well known Waldorf expert "swissdoc": 1. Use linear envelope generators for wavetable modulation (you have to build a linear envelope yourself in the matrix) and 2. Reduce the resolution of the wavetable modulation by using the bit operators in the matrix.

Blofeld mit externen Effekten wie die von Strymon ist kaum schlagbar, klingt dann richtig teuer. Ich hab mit dem Ding vorallem viele analoge Emulationen programmiert. Dank an Cotro lasslo lehel, ich glaub so heisst er. Das Editorprogramm wirft einem manchmal raus, aber unterm Strich absolut super.
If I may ask: Have you been able to find out what exactly the WT/Smp-Destination in the mod-matrix is doing? I expected it to allow some sort of 2D-wavetable to be created using wavetables above and below the current one. But this doesn't seem to be true. At first, I only hear an effect on note-on and then it seems to "wildly" jump around inside the current and maybe (but I am not too sure) in one or two of the above (below?) wavetables. So the result is most often nice but remains unpredictable...

It is changing the wavetable or sample when modulated but only for the next key trigger. And yes, it's quite unpredictable and yes, that's what it's for :D
@@SynthesizerVideo Yes, this (what you explain) is what I thought it would do, too. And while your explanation is absolutely correct for samples, it is not for wavetables... But I think that I have found out by now. It is surprising what it really does in case of WT-oscillators... (will do a video on this as soon as I can).

It has 4 envelopes per voice.
