Robert Cassard has been experimenting with open and alternate guitar tunings since the age of 10. This is the first in a series of video lessons about these special tunings: Open D tuning, a mainstay of blues artists and folky artists like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan.
Open D has a deep, rich and harmonious sound that can be used for everything from acoustic folk to electric blues.
In this video, Robert demonstrates the unique sound and easy-to-play chord patterns of Open D by singing and playing "YouTurn Me On I'm a Radio" from Joni Mitchell's 1972 album, For the Roses. Includes chord charts so you can play along.
Robert Cassard shares guitars, gear and tips to make you a better musician.

It may take a few months or years, but I plan to explore lots of interesting tunings over time. I invented a D suspended tuning (DAD F# G D). You can hear it on the song "Four Letters" from my album Get This. czcams.com/video/ZgweRc_tOUs/video.html I also love D Modal (DADGAD), Open G, David Crosby's Croz” tuning, Slack Key, Saw Mill, Cross-Note (Open Dm), Open C, New Standard Tuning (Robert Fripp). And if those aren't enough, Joni Mitchell has even more exotic alternate tunings that defy description, but are a blast to explore.

Love to hear that, Sean. Sometimes I get kind of “stuck” in standard tuning because I only have one guitar with me when I play live and I don’t want to spend time re-tuning. But when I’m at home, playing for fun, or layering guitars on a recording, I almost always put one (or more) of the guitars in an open tuning or with a capo on to modify the chord shapes and find a magical blend.

Awesome, thank you, Robert! If you search my channel, you'll find Open E, Open G, Drop D. My lap steel video from way back is tuned to Emaj7. I've also done quite a few videos where I explore Nashville Tuning (which is really high-stringing, 4 bottom string an octave up). I intend to do more at some point, when I can find the time. One of my favorites is David Crosby's "Croz" tuning: E B D G A D. It's what he used for Guinnevere.

Great choice of song to demonstrate Open D. Joni can play one chord alone in any tuning and create a song that no one else would ever have written. Add in a few more in an open tuning and you have a whole new universe of sound. Well done!

Kinda seems that way, Michael. There are still many great artists and songwriters today, but we no longer have the central cultural focus on music that’s sophisticated and making a statement. Great Video. I use an different tuning with a capo that gives an open E sound that you may enjoy. Put your capo on the 2nd fret but only touch the top 4 strings leaving your bottom e and b string open. Play like your in D or G but never touch the e and b string with your left hand. Its great on a 12 string as well. Enjoy, thanks for the good content
