  • Israel is supported by many big international players - the US being the most powerful. Within Europe, it’s Germany. Following the October 7th attack by Hamas, Berlin’s backing has been ironclad. So why is Germany such a staunch supporter of Israel?

Saying that the Palestinians are human animals is not a genocidal statement? Intentionally starving the population is not genocidal. Israels far right parliamentarians and high officials have in the open stated their intent to eliminate not Hamas but the entire Palestinian population is that not a genocidal intent? What is the argument exactly here?

I enjoyed the debate! I too am less hung up on the semantics of genocide. No one deserved what happened to the Israeli people on 07 Oct. 2023, but Israel's response is insane. Their response was not and is not proportional. It is cruel/inhumane, colonial, racist and murderous on a mass scale. Netanyahu and his gangster government need to be met with what one panelist said an objective approach from their Western allies. Bravely condemn and denounce Israel's behaviour, cut off military and economic aid and vigorously aid the Palestinian people to restore them the best we can. I appreciate Ireland has called out Israel. Ultimately, Israel and Palestine have to live peacefully side by side. The West has the resources and now just has to find the guts to do just that!

Both sides are adhering to a deal they made in 1950s. Israel was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with West Germany declaring it " completely denazified" - although most of politicians and government officials just picked up where they left off in '45. Israel, ofcourse got large reparations they were practicaly living off all trough 50s and 60s until Uncle Sam stepped to the plate.

@@ThorstenSchulte first diplomatic contacts started in early 1950s. By 52' Reparation Agreement was negotiated between Ben Gurion and Adenauer and regular German payments started. From late '50s to '67 Germany was 2nd biggest supplier of weapons to Israel after France. Formal diplomatic recognition was signed in 65' mostly because of internal Israely politics. But in practice Germans were buying off forgivness of sins and Israel eas eager to sell it...
