0:54 I like how even Maverick, the top top pilot, is impressed by this maneuver.
What was that suppose to do?
@@aaron-damonkassner4715 In the real world? Nothing. Missile would still get him. And in the off-chance it missed, he's now the perfect target for the guns. And if the guns don't get him, he's bled all his energy and airspeed, which have to be recovered in a dive. Mav goes over the top and nails him from above. Classic F-14 move.
In the movie? It looks cool and surprises the audience, many of whom don't know that Sukhois can do that. But of course, it's a fun airshow demo maneuver. Not practical in a dogfight, though.
@@Astro95Media Why he did not use flares? Isn't too risky to try such a move instead of more standard one?
@@Queenbg1 Honestly, the only answer is ... it's a movie. It's impressive. It looks cool. It gets a great reaction from Maverick and Rooster. And above all ... the audience sees that they're really dealing with a superior aircraft. It increases the sense of danger by showing that this enemy really is a threat to the lives of the heroes.
@@Queenbg1 its a movie my guy they gotta take some creative liberties to make it more dramatic / cinematic.
It's amazing how the supposedly "World ending" scenes in superhero movies doesn't give you a sense of tension in the situation as these scenes do
It's even more intense when you know about aviation and realize that you're dead to rights if you're sitting in an f14, and have to pull maneuvers that would cause the tomcat to tear itself apart. As someone who loves planes and fighter jets I can definitely say that if you were to ever find yourself in an f14 going up against an su 57 then what maverick did here would be the way to go.
Superhero movies used to be fine...when they were minimal. They must be put in their place.
@@kevinh9110 You care too much.
That’s a wonderful result of great character development.
@@kevinh9110 Hot damn! Cringe comment of the thread goes to you pal 🏆
0:54 i got the same reaction as them. That scene was freakin epic
The actor playing rooster really killed it in this whole ending scene. From stealing the plane all the way through. That WTF felt so real. Lol
Fun fact: that jet (su-57) can do that irl it's because of thrust vectoring which is when the thrust is pushed in different directions for extra maneuverability
@@berryfox710 I haven’t done any research on it, I’ll admit. But I’d be pretty sure it can’t quite get to that level. Even with thrust vectoring, that looked to be a vertical flat spin. The G’s on the air frame would be crazy high. The air inlets for the engine would also be a problem. It’d be really hard to keep from having a compressor stall with that move.
The engines are running and requiring a specific amount of intake air CFM. When that’s just cut in half or more……compressor stall happens. Once that happens your either going to flame out, or drastically loose some thrust.
I’m no mechanical or aeronautical engineer now, just a dumb aircraft mechanic who works on them for a living. So i could be completely wrong, or not know a piece of engineering they have come up with to fix that problem.
@gavin cline yes but this is still a 5th generation fighter that was made with these maneuvers in mind and the pilots know this
@@berryfox710 very true. Like I said, they may have been able to engineer a way around the problems a maneuver like this would face. Hell anything is possible right?
I just have some doubts, that real life is as dramatic or as “crazy” as this scenario in the movie is. IRL it’s probably about 1/2 of this scene, seems to be the standard for movies. Make things twice as crazy as they are irl.

@@paparus8776 F22 can do the same thing.
@@paparus8776 not really, 5th gen fighters are meant to take out their targets at really far distances, the Su-57 and the F-22 just happened to have that amazing agility.
@@TechnoMinarchistBall f22 fall apart
There's nothing like seeing this film in the cinema, but being able to watch it back like this makes you appreciate the tiny details that sell the effects, like the spray from the waterfall as the planes roar past. Details you don't consciously notice on a first, second or even third viewing but trick your brain all the same are what makes this truly artful.
Even theater Imax is a massive downgrade compared to many move set-ups.
Yeah in the movie theatre you are so 'in' the plane you get kinda tunnel vision.
Thanks for the reminding , it's really detailed
That is no small detail. That's real life, performed by a real plane with no CGI. Which makes every Tom Cruise movie so great.
or how at 0:55 the plane cut the trail from the missile

There's videos of F-22 Raptor pilots doing moves like that. They call it aerial drifting.
@@guitarhero2211 i do it plenty of times in ace combat and war thunder and just like in the movie I also die after a while 😂

@@guitarhero2211 Funny you mention that :D I watched the movie for the first time very recently... then went on a YT binge afterwards to satiate my hype hunger. Stumbled upon a guy's channel called "Fighter Pilot Podcast" (I believe he was an actual Top Gun instructor himself at some point, which is cool); and he was kind enough to respond to some of my comments on the video - where he basically confirmed that he saw F-22's pull these kinds of maneuvers, meaning they're absolutely possible and not just Hollywood magic.
That blew my mind right there.
@@traphimawari7760 No you do not, you are playing a game, it is not real, child
It's cool that the enemies in this movie have the same badass skills, weapons and defense systems as the protagonists.

Glad they showed this pilot eject. He was a worthy adversary and I'm happy he survived
Edit : looks like his wingman also ejects just before the missile hits. and the su/hind pilot that get shot down are kinda unethical shooting at unarmed/defenceless opponents so their deaths are almost justified, and these guys survive because they're just doing their job.
A worthy opponent indeed. He was probably their version of maverick lol
@@Arcideeznuts I guess no enemy’s pilot is match to Tom Cruise and his plot armor
he still lost in a 5th gen but it wasnt his fault, tom's plot armor is too strong
My headcanon is that one of those pilots was actually from the end of the first film, back when they were flying in MiGs. I mean, both the MiG and Su series were created by the same country, regardless of the entity at the time.
When he ejected just in time, the G.I Joe theme went through my head. The only thing missing was a white parachute.
The CGI in this scene is very seamless. For those who don't know, the production never actually used an F-14 and obviously, couldn't get their hands on a pair of Su-57s.
Edit: The F-14 used on the ground is real. On flight, CGI.
😂
That is correct. But the flying is still real. They used the F18s but CGId them to look like an F14 and decorated the cockpits for the actors to look like an old F14 cockpit.
Another fun fact, the only scene in this film with a real F14 was actually when they pulled it out of the hangar. It was a museum prop. They towed it out because there’s no engines anymore (obviously) but they restored just enough in the hydraulics system to raise and lower the canopy.
Yeah, unfortunately the US didn't keep a single flight-capable F-14 for airshows or anything. All western F-14s are grounded and stuck in air museums. The only nation where you can find a functional F-14 is Iran, and that's kind of a tricky situation if you wanted to borrow one.
@@Shotgunky Yep, retired in fall of 2006; a sad day in aviation history. Should have kept a small squadron for airshows and special occassions.
Wrong. Everything we just saw happened in real life.

that maneuver at that part is called the kvochurs bell btw
@@JavierNotFound thanks
@@JavierNotFound Honestly I may be completely wrong but I think it may just be a cobra with the flair of using yaw while at its peak. The reason for this is that enemy fighter still has quite a lot of forward movement and simply pitches down to recover, rather than the bell which is a total stop to all forward and transfer into upward and falling tail first back into forward flight. To be fair everyone says it's a bell but I think it may be a case of telephone.
@@genericjim7983 yeah your right it’s just that the maneuver is only used for air shows especially when you use a f2s or like su57 but normally people call it “kvochur’s bell” because of its cobra and yawing to the right but was basically a Russian maneuver named after a Russian test pilot but when you use this for dog fights this will be physically impossible for just a cool maneuver that is just doing a cobra then yaw to the right but yes you are right but normally it’s sometimes called kvochur’s bell
His wingman survived too, you can see him eject just before the missile hits. Interestingly, this means Mav doesn't kill a single person in the movie.
It's crazy how advanced the newer jet is compared to the one they're flying. They're trying their hardest and sweating buckets while the enemy pilot is laid back and relaxed
Laid back and relaxed because they think they are going to win. They had no idea an ace pilot was in the seat.
Then Mav opens up with the Vulcan/Sidewinder, then the pilot actually starts to sweat.
They wouldn't win obviously. They're flying extremely low which means the su57 pilot is very experienced as well. Meaning the f14 wouldn't ever get behind. The su57 would be constantly on its back no matter how much maneuvering he'd do. Its a silly scene but still entertaining.
@@LockeLynx he doesn't? He just sits there waiting to get shot down. I guess he was hit by the jamming system of the plot armor.
@@ptyxmvm I think he thought he was gonna stall out or something, he’s never seen that cobra done on an F-14 before and he can’t pull any thrust vectoring bullshit this low to the ground

yeah with the music also :P the F14 looks lethal, id imagine at this point the enemy pilot knew he was up against the best pilot on earth and was fighting for survival at that point he no longer a threat but has become the hunted
@@Maverick25ish All the air-show party tricks in the world weren't going to save him from Maverick.
@Roberto Auel Same here. It's brilliant art direction, the way the fighters are portrayed so animalistic, like watching two apex predators fighting in an Attenborough nature documentary. Just before the start of this clip, there's a close-up of the 5th gen cockpit rising from the bottom of the screen. It reminds me of the T-rex in Jurassic Park, lifting its head, scoping out what it thinks is prey, just staring & looking for movement, deciding whether to attack or not. Really adds to the tension of the scene.

Best dogfight in Cinema. The danger and suspense felt so real
Not this scene
Sorry the scene was totally unreal, the fight scene between F14 vs SU57. In real world the F14 would have already been destroyed from SU57 in just one circle, WVR (within visual range) and rate fight on a dogfight as well as BVR (beyond visual range) match. The movie was great, but the fight scene was totally fake. Even that the film maker of this film they don't know the specification and avionics of all the aircraft such as F14, F18 as well as SU57. They made them totally fake.
Nope. The only remaining flying F14s are operated by Iran, and the Su-57 has not yet been exported and is not available to film. Besides that, the F14 would induce a flat spin if differential thrust was used like Mav's first trick, and certainly does not have the post-stall / near-stall / high AoA characteristics to perform the second. Definitely CG.
Damn y’all need to do your research. Obviously the planes are CGI because the U.S. ain’t getting their hands on a SU57 and the F14 is out of service. The flying is still real, the design is just CGI’d for the reasons discussed above. Do your research.
@@heatblast876 Just enjoy the movie lmfao It’s pretty obvious the planes had to be CGI but the flying itself is still real like in the rest of the film g
The SU-57 sequences and shots in this film are some of the best examples of amazing CGI I can think of. Obviously, with there being less than 15 of these aircraft considered "mission capable" in the real world, and all property of the Russian Military, these scenes required the use of CGI. But everything from the sound, to the vapor and air effects, to the movement is just so real and lifelike that it's honestly fits in perfectly when you consider that MOST (but not all) of the footage in this film is of real aircraft.

No only that, the plane's missiles compared to the SU-57 had a slower launch release, compared to the lightning quick ones of the enemy.
@@girl-xk2db Yeah, the rudders as well when he's doing maneuvers I thought was pretty cool that they got that accurate.
It's not a Top Gun movie without the famous F-14 Tomcat.
Just such an awesome jet.
"Anytime Baby" for the win!
2:16 when the F-14 is coming blazing out of the smoke.... goosebumps!
Im not a plane enthusiast but the TOMCAT design is just timeless especially when the wings fold back really brings out the fascinated kid in me. Grumman really created a classic with this one
Pretty much a modern Lamborghini side diffusers when they hit over 100mph 😁
lol no , tomcat is underpowered mess and the design is not suitable for carrier operation. it is designed for fleet defender interceptor along with phoenix missile system. it is not a dogfighter and a strike jet.
@@lufasumafalu5069
F-14s could certainly dog fight when they needed to.
Compared to the F-18 though it was a difficult engagement. Tomcat drivers couldn’t let the Hornet drivers get too low and starting doing their HOA stuff that they were really good at. That’s where Hornets would kill Tomcats in practice dogfights. If they kept the circle, the Tomcat could often win.
It really came down to the pilots when it was Hornets against Tomcats and who could maximize their strengths. Rule#1 of the Tomcat was to never get low with the Hornet. That meant death.
@@lufasumafalu5069 Average performance fan vs. Average aesthetics enjoyer
There was actually a plan to upgrade the F-14 with modern tech to further extend it's service life into the 2000s and beyond. It was called the Super Tomcat. However the cost of upgrading enough F-14s to meet the requirements was more than simply replacing them with a totally new plane.
0:54 even Mav himself was dumbfounded by this trick.
New Generation really showed him something new that was never seen in his time.
and the new generation fell to Mav .... it aint how old you are , its how you fly your plane .
@@chrishoyland2871 admit it.
Even old dogs can be surprised by new tricks.
Of course the good old experience will overcome that depending on their scenario like Mavs 1v1 with that pilot.
Any aviation fan with access to CZcams knows these planes can do crazy things like that. I’m surprised that Maverick was surprised by that maneuver
@@smokeypillow Maverick has seen it, but probably never from the vantage point that he was in. He was also probably surprised that the missile did not detonate as it has a proximity fuse.
@@pogo1140 He may have been under the impression of “Yeah I’ve seen stuff like that in shows-but that’s not useful in reality.”
That old bird and old man have still got it!
0:54 That smooth Cobra manoeuvre of Su 57s with that chilling music was just epic
The best part is this isn't fantasy this is real technology in our world. But it looks so otherworldly in motion.
That good old Tomcat... Still the most beautiful war plane in my eyes. Started flying because of you, beloved "piece of junk".
1986: Talk to me Goose
2022: Talk to me Rooster
That throttle split was absolute aerial poetry in motion.
That SU -57s manoeuvre ❤
0:51 I legit cheered up when they did that shot. Tony Scott is so dearly missed nowadays.
0:18 It's cool how you can see the Su-57 eject. A nice little detail.
I need a side story about the second Su-57 fighter.
Ok i get Tom Cruise is Maverick the best pilot out there but that move at 0:54 hands down one of the best manuver in this movie, worthy opponent 👍
Falling leaf maneuver?
@@albertteng1191 Pugachevs cobra, (I think?) Falling leave is basically stalling upside down.
0:56 remind me The Matrix bullet dodge scene!
Rooster is a meme: It's funny when he says "holy s***", each 5 minutes.
The cobra maneuver was dope. The pilot was really a pro just like mav.
my dad loves top gun. the first time we watched it, he said “what the” when the enemy did the cobra spin, and we all laughed when tom cruise said the same thing
At the 1:54 sec, rooster jumping of his seat was real because miles seat belt grip was loose on him but the director like the rawness of the scene and kept it in the movie.
He wasn't jumping, it was negative g forces
@@User-tn2cm no it was inertia. And "jumping" is just a way of saying it easier even if it is not correct
@@-_deploy_- alright
@@User-tn2cm thank you for reminding me actually that was climbing 😅.
It’s not this scene, you’re referring to the scene where they do the invert dive into the mountain and he hits the canopy
“Don’t think. Just do.” 😎
I enjoyed the movie because it didn’t name any enemy country. Kept the real world politics out. Yeah it’s Russian jets, and probably Iranian nuclear site but the movie kept it all out
It literally said that it was a Russian outpost they were invading.
@@thelivingshado5 when?
Nope. No country mentioned
0:51 I remember watching this maneuver in Cinema, everybody was just like "ooohh.. this guy is not for joke, hard opponent for them"
Splitting the throttles... Will be my favorite F-14 scene
That second fighter jet is like how did I lose a dog fight to An F-14 😆 Don’t mess with a classic 🙂
victory belongs to the one never give up, never say impossible, just do it!
0:59
maverick: 😨
Rooster: 😱
Battlefield player: oh here comes the RPG eject-return trick
As a pilot, I can't tell you how cool 0:39 was

No matter how you look at it, that SU-57 maneuver is the best scene in this fight
It's no doubt that Joseph Kosinski is a very talented director!!!
@Razor 2 Nah, he's a good director. His movies are very good.
I love that they don't have the usual infinite ammo in movies, and we actually get to see the ammo meter on the control panel counting down.
This movie felt so intense because are all things that can happen. This isnt some CGI superhero or monsters bullshit, those are real planes and real missions that some pilots maybe do
At this point it's obvious you "rEaL cInEmA" elitists are just parroting what you hear someone smarter than you say first because this scene contains no real planes. There are no usable Tomcat's remaining in the US and they can't use the Felon for obvious reasons.
It's intense because of the directing and choreography. Real dogfights aren't as visually intense and the planes here are CGI to a degree --- It's not like they're destroying actual 5th gen fighter jets.
@@peterfrank3365 Not to mention most missiles are meant for long range engagements - you might never even see the plane that fired at you
tell me you know nothing about modern air combat without telling me you know nothing about modern air combat
@@hunnyfox225 Most or half? But in this case, where you are looking at a "friendly" aircraft and pilot's signaling that their comms are out, That starting setup was bang on accurate.
Maverick became an Ace in this scene.
As if he wasn’t already one
@@angelic_disappointment7889 no, he became a ace with the adding of the 2 su-57 kills
@@angelic_disappointment7889 He only had 3 kills in the first Top Gun.
Pretty funny that all five of his kills are in the Tomcat
0:51 love the little hallmark to the first Top Gun with the angles being the same as the missile launch of the original. Great touch
0:18 that F-14 Soaring maneuver is Badass!
“Hang on, we gotta get low! The terrain will confuse his targeting system!” But not the targeting system of the F-14, apparently. 😎
Because missile of F-14 and Su-57 are different
I'm not an air combat expert but I think its a different type of missile which uses a different method of targeting.
@@IronSnake98 its radar guided vs thermal, i am sure SU57 also have some thermal guided missiles but anyway
Historically, USSR/Russian avionics always struggled with look down/shoot down capabilities. The US invested a *lot* of money in getting it to work.
it s 100% screenplay, of course, but if you want to rationalize, the F14 was coming down on the Su, so they were sort of still out of the canyon. When The Su lines up with the tail of the F14, they are deep down over the canopy
this dogfight scenes ...
just amazing !
Briliant scene. That cat coming through the smoke with its guns blazing. Absolutely awesome aircraft.
I always loved seeing the F-14 fly. My grandfather built it. My uncle flew it. And I launched it. Man I love the plane.
I felt Ace Combat vibes from this scene.
The sound design in this film and especially this scene is amazing. Be it the familiar, yet alien noises and visuals of the *5th gen fighter of unspecified origin* , the deep, heavy noises the missiles make when fired or the mechanical sounds in the F14 cockpit. That "Splitting the throttles" followed by the metallic clickety clack in the cockpit is just awesome. Gets me every time I see it!
what sucks is the Vulcan' noises suck they never get those right.
Perfect use for the one F-bomb you get in PG-13.
He is explaining all his moves during this extremely stressful combat. How nice of him. Both a fighter and a teacher. 🤣🤣🤣
He’s communicating with his copilot.
If you watch Growling Sidewinders you would see him explaining his move by move while in a intense dogfight
