Went to see this with my dad who was a prisoner himself of the Japanese. He spent time on the Burma Thailand railway and was shipped to Japan in 44 to work in the coalmines. He said conditions in the mines were actually better due to the fact they could actually have a rest because they could see the guards head lamps coming. He was Private Neil Macpherson WX16572 2/2 Pioneer Battalion AIF 1941 -1946

Of Course Watanabi didnt want to meet Louie after the war... he was PROVEN to be a lesser man and had no desire to feel that way again. Beaten, starved and worked nearly to death, Louie still stood firm... Watanabi knew in those moments he could NEVER be the man that Louie was, and was shamed.

I read the book some time before and wanted to watch the movie, and this is good for a recap.
I’m so amazed that Louis survived and was so resilient, it makes it one of my favorite stories. One of the things that always shook me was that he forgave them all and went to Tokyo, a place where he suffered so much, and ran with the torch and fulfilled his dream. I cant express how amazing Louis’ story is. I feel happy that he was able to find solace after the war, survive and fulfill his dreams.

Ngl they kinda left out a lot out in the end, literally after the war he became an abusive alcoholic husband to his wife and kids and even tried to find where watanabe was to try to kill him (All of this is said by HIS OWN WORDS in the book im not just making this up) and Im pretty sure he remarried and then became religious, also they forgot to mention he met hitler in the olympics. He's still a great man who overcame a lot of things but the movie tried to make him look perfect even though he's human like all of us.

God bless him. And every single other POW who was put through that horrendous torture. May their stories be told and celebrated for eternity to come, and may the fiery spirits of those still among us burn as bright as ever.

I once read a book where a bomber had been shot down but I think they all lived and were stranded in the middle of the ocean on a life raft and it talked about how they had to drink salt water and eventually they had to resort to cannibalism to survive, I couldn’t believe how terrible it was to eat someone you knew

    “Japanise fighter jet”
There were no Japanese fighter jets in WW2, the closest thing is probably the kikka, which never made it into production. Also they were attacked by zeros and I think some kates.
