I really do just be chatting up a storm in the background. 😂😂😂
I wish Beans made a appearance.
I loved seeing you here! Cinema Rules and Awkward Ashliegh are my favourite reaction videos. You guys are a hoot!! 👏👏👏👏
I literally said "wooooo!!!" When I saw you in the video lol.
You three should setup a collaboration sometime! Ashley you rock. All three of you rock!
I loved your cameo in this review!
I was like "Holy smokes, they watch her too!"
Clearly, they want to do a collaborative video and this is attempt #1 to shoehorn you into their videos.
Y'all have great taste. I don't mean the movie, I mean Ashleigh. 😉
I AM DYING.
like Ashleigh as well ;)
Agreed on both accounts - presuming this is also saying that they didn't understand the movie.
"Dog Soldiers "....though recommending it in this reaction is pretty much a spoiler. I think its one of the best in the genre.
100%
Great creepy damn movie definitely worth a watch.
Don't worry about spoilers. I think the title pretty much explains the plot anyway!
Dog Soldiers is so so underrated as a werewolf film!
Best campfire scene ever.
Now I need a cinema rules/Ashleigh collab
that would blow my mind. Ashleigh is so fun.
Yep. This needs to happen.
yeah, they can live stream watching Subspecies 1,2 and 3!
Would be Freakin' Incredibly Cool... like Marvel/DC Team-Up ... They are My 2 Favorite film reaction channels
@@myopicautisticmetal9035 Radu gave me nightmares lol. Great and unique story too.
SILVER BULLET. That's a pretty good werewolf movie you need to watch. Based on a Stephen King short story. Starring Gary Busey and Corey Haim.
Good werewolf movie but terrible werewolf look lol
That's a fun film, if not the best-looking werewolf costume ever.
@@Corn_Pone_Flicks hell nooo lol
Nice to see Ashleigh make a cameo in your cold open.
I know, we must inform Miss Ashleigh of her lovely guest appearance.
Groovy baby.
Yeah that was pretty cool and unexpected.
Smooth!
That's hilarious because I just watched her IT reaction, LOL
You can’t escape me. 👀
That transformation is a perfect example of why practical effects trump CGI.
SOME practical effects trump SOME CGI. It's not a "one size fits all" situation. I've seen some amazing CGI and some terrible practical effects, too.
@@Corn_Pone_FlicksTrue.
Best werewolf transformation ever.
‘Dog Soldiers.’
(Also, stay well away from ‘An American Werewolf in Paris’).
Dog Soldiers is easily my favorite werewolf movie. Spoon was great.
I recommend Dog Soldiers too... such an original werewolf movie!!
Arrrggghh to quote the fourth Doctor in Nightmare of Eden "my arms, my legs, my everything".
Those ghastly cgi transformations, I now need a lie down in the zero room Lol.
An American Werewolf in Paris is goofy and no real sequel, it does have its moments though.
Silver Bullet
Lovely to see Ashleigh in the background in the cold open, she's my other favourite reactor. I agree with you appreciation of this movie, 4.7 / 5 is about what I would also give it.
But theirs is out of 10 lol
I don’t know why I like The Howling more than American Werewolf In London. I saw them both at a very young age (around 10) and The Howling frightened me more. I know that AWIL is the better film, but there’s something so nostalgic about The Howling for me.
Same for me
For me AW was my first horror film at 7 or 8 lol watched it by accident. Scared the shit out of me. Watched it later and loved it. Like the howling probably again for nostalgia but it's just ok for me.
I agree about liking The Howling more than AWiL, probably more about nostalgia for me too. I know I saw it on one of the premium cable channels (probably HBO) in 1981 when I was only 6 years old. Went with my best friend to sleep over at her father's house. I remember on Sunday night it was on again and I wanted to stay and watch it again lol, but my mother was there to pick me up.
The Howling has an ending. When I saw AWIL in the theater there were a number of "What? It's over?" comments in the audience.
I saw a double feature of it with The Final Conflict. Which another movie CR needs to watch. (It's Omen 3 to you younglings.)
Definitely watch Ginger Snaps! It’s a Canadian film that’s way ahead of its time! I know y’all would like that one :)
Totally agree!
Ginger Snaps is an amazing movie!
Yeah Ginger Snaps rules. It's on CZcams as well!
Overrated. The beginning is good. But that's it.
@@juliant007 Thanks Julian. Your opinion was asked for and definitely adds much to the conversation
And ginger snaps back the second movie is pretty cool great visual Style.
I like The Howling, a whole cult of Werewolves living in a small town is awesome.
Like a...pack?
1981 was the year of the werewolf movie. The Howling, American Werewolf in London and Wolfen all came out within 9 months of each other. Wolfen isn’t technically a werewolf film but was marketed that way. Track it down, it’s a great movie.
Wolfen is really pretty terrific tho, on its own terms. Love the decapitation scene and it's setup!
@@justinplayfair4638 Gregory Hines is awesome in it.
WOLFEN is really wonderful. I’m guessing Cinema Rules would find it slow and ludicrous. That scene on top of Brooklyn Bridge (I think) always gives me vertigo.
Albert Finney was great in the wolfen it's less horror and more a political movie with some deeper themes around urban decay and marginalised groups,
Fun fact about this movie, the main couple is actually married in real life and has a daughter. Sadly, the husband passed when their daughter was very young, but she made a video on tik tok about how she’s so thankful she has this movie as a way of seeing her father again when he was young
Ayyyy, you had Ashleigh on in the background! She's pretty great.
The howling was my dad’s favorite movie and he introduced me to these classic horror movies , he passed away last year , but seeing you guys react to this really has me excited and happy
🐺❤👍👍
Dog soldiers is a great one 😁
YES
Thanks, Tom! Thanks, Shaun! 🐺 I love that *Ashleigh* *Burton* is on your tv!!! And I also love that *Dee* *Wallace* is in THE HOWLING. She's always a win, in my book.
Dee is great in Peter Jackson's The Frighteners!
Indeed, Justin! 🥂 My favorite role of hers was in Blake Edwards' 10 (1979). It was a minor character, but it really showed off her acting chops.
They have no idea who Dee Wallace is.
@@ChucksCherubs3 Their loss...she's awesome!
I love Dee!
I love how you’re watching Ashleigh at the beginning. 😁 Her channel is the only other one I watch regularly besides yours.
You need to check out Alanda Parker.
You da best.
Awe, thanks Ashleigh. 😊
This transformation was done by Rob Bottin the same guy who went on to do The Thing which is a practical FX masterpiece. He was actually the understudy of Rick Baker who was the guy who did AAWIL. Both fantastic FX and Make up artists.
Rick Baker must have thought a lot of Rob Bottin's skills to tell him here you handle this movie while i go do AWIL.
I don't believe Rick had any day in it...
@@justinplayfair4638 no I don't think Rick had anything to do with this one. He did help out a bit with the thing though as it got a bit to much for Rob and he had to check into a clinic after suffering from stress and exhaustion.
@@justinplayfair4638 I think he was listed as a SFX consultant, i believe the story is he agreed to do AWIL with John Landis but that movie was kinda up in the air and he got offered the Howling but John Landis got kinda mad that he was doing a rival werewolf movie so he told Rob Bottin to handle the SFX for the Howling and he went off to do AWIL
You're fans of Ashleigh, awesome, me too! I'm of course a fan of yours, too. The Howling is my second favorite werewolf movie, just behind An American Werewolf In London. :)
I do so love this movie. I’m sorry it didn’t live up to your expectations. I’m a huge Joe Dante, Dee Wallace, Patrick McNee and Robert Picardo fan so this movie is like my crack.
To me Robert Picardo will always be the beloved Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager so it’s so amazing and wonderful to see him as a psychotic werewolf in this film!
Nothing is suppose to be subtle in this film. It is a heavy homage to the werewolf movies that came before including the score.
This Howling has some of the creepiest ambience, music, set and settings... It's one of the best horror movies ever made IMO
There is Wolfen from around this time as well, but that's kind of a hybrid. I suspect the response would be tepid for that also.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. Not great. I could have predicted the tepid response because I had the same response when I saw it in 1981! Lol. Too bad, they could have been watching "Creepshow", a much better 80s horror movie, lol.
I like Wolfen better than this though. Dunno what that says about me.....
The book is great though! If they stuck closer to it, it’d be even better!
@@floydster23 I think you may be right on that score, floydster, I haven't seen it since the 80s - and only the one time, in the theater - I should probably give it another look before I pass judgment on it. I remember virtually nothing about it and I'm basing it on that, and my memory of how I felt about it. But I'll give that one a second look, I might have just been too young to dig it.
Anyone remember the 80's TV series Werewolf with Chuck Connors?
I don’t, which is surprising, as I was crazy for werewolves as a kid/tween. I assume it only made it a season or so, otherwise I would have at least noticed it.
Ok, I just looked it up. It premiered in 1987. By that time, I was in my late teens & was usually busy with work, friends & stuff, which is likely why I missed it.
It’s got a good Google & IMDB score. I’ll look around for an episode to check out.
How about Manimal with that actor from Jaws 3?
@@excalibur2024guy Simon MacCorkindale...loved "Manimal" back in the day.
I was reminded of werewolf the other day on
Good Bad Flicks
I can't really remember it but I have fond memories. I remember it was on at 2am on late night late (ITV) followed by War of the World's series.
Silver Bullet & Ginger Snaps are good ones. Also Cursed (not the best werewolf movie, but I think fun to watch)
Dog Soldiers is a great werewolf movie
American Werewolf in London is the best one
The Howling never really did it for me - especially the poodle at the end!?!
I've never understood the fan base for this one. But I agree , American werewolf is the best , silver bullet , ginger snaps, monster squad and blood moon are also top my list of great werewolf films
@@afrocut The fanbase for this is easy to understand. The Howling features the best werewolf creature/costume design to date. Is it a better overall movie than AWIL? No. But for many of us the creature design is superior, and that counts for a lot if you're a werewolf fan (as I am).
@@FinrodFelagund5 I actually like Dog Soldiers better for the look of the werewolves
@@FinrodFelagund5 I understand your opinion, just think one of the wolves look good in it and it's in it for only a little bit. To judge an entire movie over a few effects seems a little strange to me. Here the entire package is severely lacking and the spoofing ideas just don't work. Sure some effects are good but the movie is extremely mediocre.
@@afrocut yes, i agree they look really good , but maybe for the date! dog soldiers (for me) enhance the costumes in comparison to the whowling
Laughing my ass off at Ashleigh being in the background, I love that y’all support each other.
John Sayles the screenwriter (and future director) is Oscar nominated and wrote the best exploitation films ofthat era before he started writing for Spielberg, etc. This is more satirical to 70's new-age self-help culture and filled with Dante references.
And he has that cameo as the morgue attendant!
Always liked Sayles' early genre scripts like this, Alligator, Wild Thing, and Battle Beyond the Stars.
Cannot believe they call it badly written. John Sayle is not some bozo. lol
The original Wolf Man from 1941 is always a good watch! Very dramatic and wonderfully classic Hollywood.
Agreed!
Dog Soldiers, Silver Bullet, The Wolfman (2010), Wolf
I liked The Wolfman (2010), hard to believe it's already been 11 years.
Overall, probably too much CGI. Werewolves and computer effects don't go all that well together, like a match made in Hell.
@@LarryFleetwood8675Still a hell of a step from the effects An American Werewolf in Paris had, blasphemy to call it a sequel to An American Werewolf in London, pioneer of practical werewolf effects
Silver Bullet was a great classic 80's Werewolf flick. Off the Steven King novel, The Cycle of the Werewolf. Oh and Gary Busey
Smothered in 80s Cheese but it is a good werewolf flick. Gary busey is fantastically over the top but still believable
Yeah, they need to react to this one soon, such a great movie!
Silver bullet is junk
Nostalgia trash
It's great I like it a lot, let's see if they 'get' this one with its old-fashioned narration style and small town fairy tale vibe...
American Werewolf in London transformation was pain but the Howling transformation was orgasmic in my opinion
The way I see the big major transformation scenes in each movie; The Howling to me is the scarier one because it looks and feels more like a real live person transforming in front of you plus there's a witness too, which only adds to the tension you feel. American Werewolf in London on the other hand, probably more of a special f/x showcase with the guy alone in an apartment its best part for me is at the very end where the camera pans along the hairy body...and off it is to the city. Overall though, the atmosphere in American Werewolf is more eerie and thus more effective despite being a dark comedy (a bit like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is) but in terms of sheer creepiness of transformation, I don't think anything really tops The Howling.
I'm a hardcore werewolf lore and movies fan, be it classic or modern ones and I always will be. That said, The Howling's werewolf transformation is f*cking ridiculous 😂😂😂
well said!
What I like about the howling is the vibe of the movie. Very creepy, considering that pack of werewolves is out there in the woods
@@nitrokid How old are you, 20... ?! lol
Dog soldiers is definitely a must-watch, the Wolfman remake is surprisingly good, and Wolfen is also a cult classic but sadly, kinda forgotten. Also, nice to see Ashley 😉
Dog soldiers is great
Sadly, the editing and shaky camera very nearly ruins that film.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 but also hides any low budget shonky effects!
OMG! Awkward Ashleigh inside Cinema Rules is like a riddle inside of an enigma. Trippy.
I see Ashleigh Burton on the tele in the background. Love her reactions, with her Hallowbeans a fun watch. She's not so tied down with minutiae....
TBR Schmidt is another reaction channel that is a favorite.
Also Just SUMM Reactions with Matt and Emily!
TBR Schmitt got a lot better after his wife (fiancee at the time) joined him.
These are all my fave channels too. These guys. Ashleigh. TBR. I won’t mention names but I gave up on another reactor lately when she repeatedly said that Beetlejuice was stupid. I don’t need that kind of negativity in my life.
@@richardb6260 ... at first, I wasn't sure if I liked TBR having someone there, but yes, they both have astute observations that I sometimes miss.
@@emilywilhite5807 .. The Exorcist has been popular recently, and one reactor said the movie was not scary, and predictable...but she just spent the whole movie hiding her eyes, expressing shock at plot twists...seriously?
BTW the movie volume has been really low the last few movies. Just a heads up
Thank you, we’re currently looking into this issue 😊
Every time I hear about this movie, i confuse it with Jack Nicholson's Wolf, which is just ridiculous enough that I think it would make an entertaining reaction video for you guys. Just a suggestion. Love your vids!
Haha I liked Wolf
I agree Wolf I like way more. I think you guys would enjoy it. It's not the greatest werewolf film but it's entertaining!
I love that yoiu're watching Ashley in the background. Love her! Also love Alanda Parker.
Rick Baker was originally doing the make-up for this and would have used the same techniques he'd been planning to use on Landis' film for nearly a decade (!).
When Landis finally got the greenlight, Baker handed this to Rob Bottin, who was his protégé, and Bottin's work is understandably similar, but he did put his own signature on it.
Football Bladders. Not to mention Rob went on to do The Thing
two masters of the craft!
You lads should definitely do The Howling 7.
It makes the Star Wars Holiday Special look like Casablanca
Patrick Macnee was best known for starring in a wonderful classic British TV show called The Avengers (not MCU). It's a great spy show that still holds up-not that I'd expect you guys to react to it.
And not that I'd expect them to know about The Avengers as they don't really seem to know about things that are from before they were born. :(
@@ChucksCherubs3 I think that's pretty typical for most people when they're younger. Be glad that the Cinema Rules guys are at least willing to explore media much older than them.
@@MichaelPhillipsatGreyOwlStudio Sadly, you're right.
Diana Rigg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The show was silly but I, like most guys watched because of Emma Peel, (Diana Rigg)
How awesome that y'all have Ashleigh playing in the background. "HI...YES...HELLO!!!" Y'all are both some of my favorite reactors.
Joe Dante is an underrated filmmaker. Also immensely knowledgeable of cinema. I hope you eventually review his films Matinee,
Innerspace and Gremlins 2. Great vid 👍
InnerSpace (1987) for sure. I do think they'll find it a hoot, especially the Cowboy played by Robert Picardo (Eddie in The Howling), even if they sometimes seem to have a problem with past cinema pacing but man if they don't like that one either they don't appreciate or comprehend enough of cinema history. Period. ;-)
Piranha is a whole lotta fun. Just tongue in cheek enough, and a hell of a lot more entertaining than all the other stuff that came out after Jaws.
The Burbs
Couple of other Joe Dante films I love love love: Innerspace and The 'Burbs
The burbs was one of my fav films when I was a kid
The Company of Wolves and Silver Bullet are two more well made werewolf movies.
Dog Soldiers was also pretty decent.
Ginger snaps and blood moon as well.
Hello from Winston Salem NC USA!
Great reaction vid as always!
The comment "I didn't think werewolves did missionary" is an instant classic!!!
Keep up the great vids.
Many blessings to you and yours.
Anyone else half-expecting Eddie, when he sits up and pulls the sheet off himself to say, "Please state the nature of the medical emergency?"
So sad to see you guys werent into "The Howling" as much as i was. The movie came out slightly before American Werewolf and it changed the concept of the wolfman and the moon myth, now they could change at will. I adore this movie and remember the impact it had on box office and moviegoers when it came out. A true homage to matinèe movie horror.
To be fair, they hardly 'watched' most of it. It's one of my all time favorite horror movies and I love Joe Dante's semi-humorous take on werewolves. It's one thing for Shaun to not know much about movies, but the fact that he couldn't recognize that the film is full of obvious in-jokes is just dumb on his part.
@@ChucksCherubs3 He said he didn't like it from the start so why would you review something you had already made up your mind about? He seems to be taking a "less than care" attitude these days with sarcastic comments and leaving it up to Tom to actually WATCH the film. That's why I'm not subbed here and only watch them now and then.
I personally think AAWIL is the best werewolf movie. But there are some good ones. Dog Soldiers obviously, Wolf (another jack Nicholson good performance) Ginger Snaps. I'm probably forgetting something good. There's a new one I can't remember the name that was good about an old guy in a home.
Underworld!!!! (I jest, I jest)
This is a favorite of mine but I only re-watched it recently. But it wasn't only until I heard your full watch video that it's such a slow burn and won't be everyone's cup of tea. Once again, nostalgia has done me in.
The werewolf transformation is not quite as good as American werewolf in London but the werewolves are better. I prefer it when they are bipedal but I would say Dog soldiers do it better. If you guys haven't seen Dog Soldiers then you really need to watch that one. Plus it's a British horror with a fantastic sense of humour.
They didn't have near the budget of AWIL. Seeing what Bottin can do with a big budget in The Thing, he could have knocked it out of the park with AWIL money.
Ashleigh Burton!?!?👀 Also, the werewolf movies I would recommend are:
The wolfman (2010)
Dog soldiers (2002)
The underworld franchise
Howl (2015)
I thought that remake of The Wolfman was really lame, I'm shocked to see that mentioned! Anthony Hopkins sleepwalking through it, a terrible script. Completely unmemorable.
I second The Wolfman, if you were to pick just one of these.
@@TTM9691 That's fair enough, I respect your opinion and I do see your point of view.
@@Burto11 I heard "Dog Soliders" was good, though! I'm going to check that one out. Thanks Josiah.
What's up with Ashleigh on your TV behind you? Lol! You mean....you guys watch reaction videos?! Are you guys paying homage to other reactors, the way some directors will pay homage to other moviemakers? :D
Silver Bullet is another classic werewolf movie with Corey Haim and Gary Busey. It is based off of a Stephen King short story and it is fantastic in my opinion.
I saw this last night at the Drive-In and Dee Wallace was the guest. Got to meet her she is so wonderful to meet. Definitely one of the best werewolf films ever made. I saw this when I was about 6 and it will always have a special place for me.
No way! Awesome.
"Wolfen" is another werewolf movie that came out in 1981.
It's not a werewolf movie though.
This might be my favorite werewolf film. Directed by 'gremlins' man joe dante, he also did small soldiers lol. Have you guys seen 'the babadook' ?
love yalls reactions....lol i love how ashleigh burton is in the background tv just living her best life. shes an awesome reactor too
Another great 80's werewolf movie, I like it a lot albeit I haven't seen it in over 20 years. So I guess I did like it 20 years ago. But even back then I did not like the cutesy Ewok look for her as a werewolf, that was just stupid. :)
I think it was to show her innocence. Remember the drawings? They started out that way and kept changing. My theory is within a few years, she’d look like the others
I’m going to echo some others on here in that I prefer The Howling to American Werewolf, probably because I think the creature design is better. Definitely check out Dog Soldiers and Ginger Snaps, and maybe Howl (another British werewolf flick). Even go back and watch The Beast Must Die from 1974, a (British) flick that has a “werewolf break” near the end to give the audience a chance to guess who the werewolf is.
Yes, plus John Landis uhhhgg.
Horrible human being.
I think I actually like The Howling and American Werewolf in London almost equally for different reasons. My favorite werewolf movie though is Ginger Snaps, so I second that recommendation.
Silver Bullet, Werrrr, Bad Moon
@@ResurrectionDreams Ginger Snaps was too childish for me. And the werewolf looked terrible. There are some good elements, though. I prefered Ginger Snaps 2. Almost felt like a David Lynch movie. lol
I actually remember enjoying the direct-to-video Howling V: The Rebirth. Takes place in a castle. No need to have seen the other films to enjoy that one.
Howling V was always my favorite. It's a good whodunit but with a werewolf.
You've teased the team up...let the collaboration begin! Terrific reaction as always 👍
To see a straight up comparison between this one and AWWIL check out the Surely You Can't Be Serious Podcast. They also break down the production of both films with great trivia too.
Actually American Werewolf and The Howling were both released in 1981
Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. Having said that, I believe "The Howling" didn't resonate with you two primarily because it's a dark satire/praise of American horror at the time. The movie is crammed with subtle references to other horror directors and actors. It's also a tongue-in-cheek reflection of the New Age hippie vibes of the 1960s and 1970s. Personally, the only thing I don't care for in this movie are the werewolf ears; they make the werewolves look like Donnie Darko rabbits.
Yes, if you grew up in the age of EST and other self-help fads, this meant a LOT more! Also, it's got a lot of classic character actors that add subtext, but are unknown to the lads. Lastly, this was FIRST major use of the techniques that Bottin learned apprenticing with Rick Baker, and it was STARTLING back then. I believe that The Howling may have had the very first Red Band trailer...the audience I saw the trailer with LOST IT watching those bladder effects!
It's chock full of Easter eggs only boomers and Gen Xers would get.
@@justinplayfair4638 what is EST?
@@excalibur2024guy Wikipedia can describe it better than I can...en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erhard_Seminars_Training
I came here to say this very thing: I am not disappointed someone beat me to it! I actually like the movie and the concept of a self-help group/New Age cult turned into a pack of werewolves is just a neat idea and the way it's handled is great. Yeah, the ears are a bit much, but considering how fantastic the rest of the werewolf effects are, I let that slide. Well. mostly. Glad to see someone else has the same take!
Again the sound levels are quite low. Don't know if it's a YT thing since I've noticed the same thing with some other newly uploaded videos from other creators. Just FYI. :)
We’re looking into this as we have seen your comments a few times, but for us the sound is fine and we’re able to hear it properly with and without headphones, but again we’re still going to look into why it effects some but not others
@@CinemaRules he is right the sounds definitely different. Your older ones I have to turn my tv right down compared to your new ones
Totally distracted at the beginning waiting to say "It's Beans!"
I personally requested this because The howling is renown for special effects and werewolf transformation. I believe it was part of the same team who did the werewolf in an American werewolf in London.
Really cool movie and yea the transformations were cool. I almost prefer Eddie's change cause it's scarier.
Another amazing Werewolf movie that's too tier is Dog Soldiers. Great cast, great costume and effects, and great humor as well!
I was just coming on to say Dog Soldiers! Heaps of fun!
Yeah, Dog Soldiers is a good time.
Well, its insanely rapid narrative structure for sure may be more to the liking of modern audiences than 40-year old creature movies.
The campfire with the super hot babe was so awesome
This is my second favourite werewolf movie, but full respect to you guys if it didn’t do it for you. Your reactions are honest and that’s a good thing imho. I’d recommend Dog Soldiers for sure. That movie is just pure fun from almost the get-go. A great British horror gem.
Nice werewolf beast but terrible editing and camera work, though.
It was the director’s first movie, so that’s to be expected. It’s still a fun debut.
“Hes definitely a werewolf look at him!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh wow are you guys off on your review if the Howling! It has a real story unlike American werewolf great atmosphere and a real reverence and respect for the films that came before it. 7.6 put if 10. Shaun obviously judged this film before it even started. Also films should never be viewed in a lesser light because they are older. The quality of a work of art is not determined by age. You both have interesting insights and have potential as film critics, but the worthwhile critics know their history and how to distinguish their personal enjoyment of a film from its artistic quality.
We never view a film in a lesser light because it’s older, American werewolf came out the same year and we think it’s better, American werewolf had better pacing, a better hook, more interesting characterisation and better practical effects
This film only had the practical effects going for it, and despite it being a love letter to what came before, you can’t hold its merit on that alone
We respect your rating and understand why other like it better then us, but our views and opinions are our views and opinions, they may change in time once we learn more and more about cinema, they may not 🤷🏼♂️ only time will tell
Great reaction guys I seen this on by a way back in the 80s & it terrified me, The werewolf transformations still look good.

This came out around the same time as An American Werewolf in London. Cheesy now, but in 1981 it was terrifying.
Shaun saying he's getting Suspiria vibes reminds me of that funny boss baby tweet from a few years ago
"Guy who's only seen the boss baby watching his second movie:
"Getting major boss baby vibes from this""
If you like a dose of social commentary with your werewolves, then try 1981's "Wolfen."
I remember reading the book, many years ago (I was probably 12 or 13). Not sure if I ever saw the movie, though.
A lot of misconception, but Wolfen is not a werewolf movie.
This movie came out during the Werewolf cycle of horror movies. It seemed to get a good reaction and press. Most of the praise focused on the transformation from human to werewolf effects. I left the theatre thinking, "well, I'll never have that two hours back."
The actor who played the Werewolf in the amazing transformation scene also played the EMH Doctor on Star Trek:Voyager
Famous FX artist Rick Baker designed the Werewolf costume and effects for "The Howling." But he ended up leaving the project to go work on "An American Werewolf In London" instead. One of his assistants stayed on the movie and used Baker's designs. Baker also did the makeup for the 2010 remake of "The Wolfman" with Benicio del Toro. Actress Elisabeth Brooks who played Werewolf Marsha Quist, ended up suing the studio for a few hundred thousand dollars. She didn't want to do the nude scene for the bonfire transformation, so they told her that no one would see anything because the smoke from the fire would act as a screen effect. She had no idea that she'd been shown fully nude on screen, until the premiere of the movie and she was pissed. So she got a lawyer, sued the studio and ended up with way more money than she had been paid for the role.
I prefer The Howling,in that the werewolves actually control their transformations, and and can change at will.It makes them more frightening to me.American Werewolf, the effects and jokes notwithstanding,is still a retread of the same old Lon Chaney tropes, and the endless whining.
As for another werewolf flick,Dog Soldiers.
Dog soldiers is raw asf
Oh yea that is something these guys did not bring up that the werewolves could change at will and they loved being werewolves. It was not some tortured guy fighting to not change. We had never seen something like this before in movies. And yea to me it makes it even scarier. Obviously many movies came out since but there was many innovations. The look of the werewolf I prefer in this than on American Werewolf. To me the werewolf on the Howling is the ultimate werewolf look, it's how they should look. On two legs. Before this movie the look of a werewolf was just a hairy guy with teeth but this introduced the wolf head on two legs and completely changed the game visually. Many films, comics, books, TV shows ripped off that werewolf look since.
Always preferred The Howling to An American Werewolf in London.
Right it's real horror no comedy
Cinema Rules and Awkward Ashliegh are my favorite reaction videos. You are all awesome. Would love to see a collab.
THE HOWLING may be not the best movie from Joe Dante, but without Rob Bottin's work on it, we would never have had his amazing works on Carpenter's THE THING ! So, even just for this, I'm glad THE HOWLING exists.
I wanna see you guys review Brian de Palma --- CARRIE.1976 --- so bad. Can I request it via donation??
We will get round to it, don’t worry 😊
My favorite is Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein where the werewolf is throughout the film. I've probably watched this one more than the other two combined.
It's so damn great. It holds up so well
The thing about the Howling is that there are 7 or 8 movies and then another 4 that are unofficial prequels (different writers and directors) and each one dives a little deeper into the lore and the origin of the bloodline. It is very fascinating some are more gory than others and it quickly became a fan favorite series. Also Dee Wallace is a household name in the horror genre. Cujo, Critters, Halloween, she is in a bunch of Rob Zombie films, The Frightners, Hansel & Gretyl, Popcorn and a TON of B-grade sci-fi-horror movies. What I like about The Howling movies is the Creep Show vibe they work with.
As far as "scores" go, I first saw this movie on "pirate VHS" around 1985 when I was 11 (my best mate's uncle used to be able to get SO many films before they became readily available on the nascent home media in the UK - this will be meaningless to those brought up in the days of CZcams, streaming and MoD in the 21st Century!!), and I ADORED it. Every time I watch it, it takes me right back to those days when I was on the edge of my seat and watching things I knew my parents would absolutely flip out over. I'd give the film an effortless 8/10. The atmosphere, the acting of the leads, the practical effects...all absolutely superb, and I remember being "intrigued" by the opening act as I didn't know what I was watching, what it was about or what was to come!! :)
Oh, you guys NEED to watch the "sequel" to this film : "The Howling 2, Stirba: Werewolf Bitch"!! It follows on from the final events of the original (though refilmed with different creature effects (There was a deleted plot strand where the lycanthropes and humans had a common lineage, so they were designed to be more "ape like" which ultimately comes off as naff/cheap - ahem!!) yet gives a whole mythology to the werewolves. It stars Christopher Lee and Sybil Dancing and is the perfect epitome of "so bad that it can be good" films (any movie which does a full scale, on-location werewolf orgy has to be given some plus points!!!) I LOVE the film (I saw it many, MANY years ago with my best mate on a Friday night after the pub...) but completely understand why most people don't rate it at all. It's stuffed full of bad practical effects, foreign location filming, the worst acting you'll ever see.....but I watch it around Christmas every couple of years, with a few large G&Ts!! :)
Lol there’s Ashley, I saw Brandon comment on your vids, that’s 3 out of the 4 reactors I watch tied to you in some tenuous way, weird, go get mr video to round it out lol
Who’s the 4th reactor? 😊
Don't forget James vs. Cinema cameo.
@@CinemaRules Leo, his channel is itsmrvideo an American guy, has the best shirts!
@@spongebobandplanktonshould2920 I only randomly watch that guy, I subbed to these 4, to me they’re the best
@@olivellanarrowboat4319 the only good thing about that dude - shirts lol. not messing with his reacting style
This is not "trash" it is one of the best werewolf movies ever made. I think maybe you are too young to appreciate it.
Thanks for that old man. And they’re entitled to their own opinions? Wow, what a condescending comment.
@@EmlynBoyle Oh, stop being so hyper defensive. I agree with Steve, they're too young to appreciate the movie. Even Shaun formed an opinion before they even started watching it. The effects at the time were groundbreaking, but today they can be seen as cheesy. But I think calling it "campy" and comparing it to BTVS is way off, clearly they didn't understand what they were watching. Or at least Shaun didn't. This isn't an attack on Shaun or your gen, it's merely an observation, which is the entire point in watching first time reactions.
The old man with the gnarled fingers is John Carradine, an American actor who had a very long, storied career. His hands appear that way for real because in old age, he suffered from very painful and crippling rheumatoid arthritis.
I have to agree with you guys. It holds some nostalgia for me, but that’s about it. It scared me like crazy as a kid but when I watched it last year I was mostly bored. It was scary for its time but hasn’t aged well. The same with The Amityville Horror. It was fun to see your reactions though!
The remake of Amityville Horror with Ryan Reynolds is actually much better than the original. The original never impressed me.
There were a whole bunch of werewolves movies in the early 80s. I highly recommend The Company Of Wolves by Neil Jordan. It doesn't get enough attention, and I think it's the first movie to combine werewolves with the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Also has some amazingly gory effects in it.
That's a great film.
I actually prefer The Howling. Better werewolf design, more wolf action, transformations when they want to, beautiful cinematography and locations. AW in London is great too, but it was more of a comedy.
I think that Howling and American Werewolf in London are the best werewolf movies up to date
The "Main Woman" is the Actress Dee Wallace who was the Mom in E.T.
Shaun's jump scares crack me up every time. Also enjoy you guys showing love to Ashleigh's channel!

The guy on the right is so annoying.
Yes he is
Another film that isn't talked about much is David Cronenberg's "The Brood." Like Reannimator, you'll be asking yourself, "What did I just watch?" It's also got Oliver Reed in it. Would love to see your reaction to it. Love the channel!
I'd love to see some more Cronenberg reactions on this channel. IIRC they've only done The Fly so far.
Okay, now I’m hoping for a Cinema Rules/Millennial Movie Monday collab I didn’t know I wanted 😂
