    And to think. This was the performance that got rated the lowest in Kingdom. Every one was kinda shocked at the low score. There was one flaw, because I.N's voice cracked near the end. The producers of the show pulled him aside before they even got to get fully back to their dressing room to interview him about why it happened. I.N ended up in tears, and thought he ruined the whole performance. Bang Chan had to pull him aside & comfort him that is wasn't his fault. And I.N still cried later that night again, because he still blamed himself for their low score.
    Every person I have seen react to this is blown away. Even vocal instructors. They comment about how hard it is to sound as stable as they did, with the choreography that was done. They comment on how Felix was so steady while being dragged across the floor. How Changbin rapped the part of two rappers, while everyone else was doing incredible high notes & intense dancing. Like....What did the judges think was wrong with the singing? I think one of the reasons given, was that SKZ didn't transform the song enough. They kept it in a high register. They changed the gender of who the song was about to gender neutral. They gave it a complete story of loss, separation, despair, and longing for someone lost to be alive again. What more did the judges want?
    Loved your reaction by the way. It's always fun to see people be blown away by this.

      I’ve heard a few reasons as to why it was scored low, I think some statement after the show stated that it wasn’t because of the voice crack (the editors and producers just decided to focus on it for the sake of drama) but rather that the song is super popular and either they changed it too much (which is a stupid reason is that was the whole point of the challenge that round) or they didn’t change it enough to be made into their signature sound (which was my initial thought on why they scored low even though SKZ discography has so many genre that even though the remix of ‘I’ll be your man’ isn’t like their title track sound it is still stray kids sounding if you go off their b-sides).
      Either way I think the judges were being nit picky when ranking and the producers needed to spice things up to keep the show “interesting”. Either way our boys did a great job and although they were brilliant before Kingdom they have improved even more after it, especially Innie and Seungminnie.

      Nah, im guessing its the criteria not I.N. he just had a strong reaction from missing the note so they dramatized it. Im guessing its because they had alot of solos here. Just like their criticism in Side Effects rendition where they had little "team or togetherness"apparently.
      Thats the problem of dubious anonymous professionals. Coz like they did for sf9 performance. One of the member struggled with a stunt and they kept highlighting that when they ranked low. Compare it to high rank performance and there's really no fault finding

    Just for clarification, it’s Seungmin in the beginning, not Lee Know. And at the end, the two singers are Han and Seungmin while Changbin is rapping. That part is one of my favorite skz moments ever. 🖤

    So, the story is them doing a deal with the devil to bring the boy back to life. You can see him as a statue at the beginning with them bringing him flowers. When Changbin is singing and it goes black and white it’s like they remember him when he was alive. And we can see that after he got the heart he comes back to life as he hugs Chan at the end.
    They also were missing Hyunjin who was on hiatus at the time and on the statue of the boy there is a necklace with a ring that belongs to Hyunjin. All of them made rings for the whole team while on Kingdom and they made one for Hyunjin too. And they put it on the boy.

    Stray Kids got done dirty for this stage. They were clearly THE BEST stage and got the lowest place for them, of the series. We STAY were/ are not happy about that but all agree this performance was absolutely LEGENDARY.

  • @seniorkittystay
    @seniorkittystay Před rokem +145

    The fact that Han was performing with nodules on his vocal cords is astounding.
    The voice of the 'devil' was done by Felix (no surprise) but he didn't even tell the members that he did the actual devil as well. They only found out when they recorded Kingdom Week. Kingdom Week is also worth a watch. You get some more of the behind-the-scenes shots, and then the typical SKZ chaos.
    Changbin's last rap was orginally performed by two rappers, so really underscores his skill. IN cried about his voice crack, but it really added to the emotion of the song.
    One if the artists from The Boyz (I think) went to them after the show to ask them what the story was.

  • @mazzy305
    @mazzy305 Před rokem +58

    So the story behind the performance is that the child dies (the black and white section with changbin is a flash back of the past), in order to bring the child back the boys try to follow the child. They go through the gates of heaven, but heaven won't help them, so they turn to the devil, sacrificing themselves to bring the child back.
    Also the way the kid disappeared was by ducking down so Changbin would obscure him and the running behind the camera until he could run off stage.
    Also just to clarify, the singer at the beginning was Seungmin, before Han not Lee Know. But is is harder to tell when the lights obscure them a bit.

    This is my most favorite performance by anyone, ever!!!! It's such a heartbreaking story... and the way that they turned the romantic love song "I'll Be Your Man" into a tragic story about losing a loved one, blows my mind. Essentially, they were willing to trade their lives to bring the boy back to life. Heaven wouldn't help so they turned to Felix (as the Fallen Angel/Devil) who agreed to the deal!! It's this wild mixture of Shakespearean tragedy, Faustian drama, and KPOP...I don't know howwwww it works but it's unbelievable! The fact that this performance was the lowest score of the competition, is infuriating to me. SMH It was a damn masterpiece.

  • @isabela1056
    @isabela1056 Před rokem +6

    Some people say that performance was made because hyunjin wasn't with them due to his hiatus. You can see all of them have the same ring on, 7 rings. but if you look closer, the statue is wearing a necklace, with a ring on it. The 8th ring. So it's like they would give anything to have hyunjin back. It might not be about it, but thinking of it like that makes so much sense to me...

  • @StayJJ0325
    @StayJJ0325 Před rokem +18

    Han is actually usually the one singing the highest notes and harmonies in skz’s music along with Seungmin

  • @RM_formerlyjustRMbutYTsucks

    The statue is a memorial statue -- it's standing above the lost child's grave (and wearing the ring they made for Hyunjin, as others mentioned). Once their pact with the abyss is sealed by blood, they deliver the heart/sorcerer's stone/whatever to the statue and grave, then sacrifice everything (hence them all dying at the end) -- and the lost child is returned to life, presumably using the statue as a new vessel for the reanimated soul (although obviously some of this is undefined and metaphorical).
    SKZ were willing to sacrifice everything to bring back the "precious person" (again, wearing Hyunjin's ring with _his name on it)_ who was lost to them. You can probably see why this performance was so meaningful to STAY and why it's commonly understood that, like many other subtle things they snuck into the stages, this was an acknowledgment of Hyunjin during that period when they weren't allowed to so much as mention his name. (He was literally watching these episodes with SKZ back in the dorm, and they couldn't even acknowledge his existence in public, let alone reassure the worried fandom that Hyunjin was safe at home with them when not sheltering with his parents.)

  • @diaphoni
    @diaphoni Před rokem +20

    it was Seungmin then Han and it was a fast and smooth transition. This performance got the lowest score because the judges sucked. There's so much going on here that ties to the loss of Hyunjin for this contest. The ring on the statues neck is the one they made for him. The boys showing they'll fight heaven and hell to get their lost loved one back. I feel the low score was more because they were so open with it than the tiny dip in vocals IN has near the end (that you only notice if you know to look for it, it sounds like emotion)

  • @RM_formerlyjustRMbutYTsucks

    Everyone's given you plenty of great info about this performance, the backstory, the hidden nods to Hyunjin, etc. I'll just add that when they decided to change the gendered language to neutral (and the focus of the story from a female ex-lover to a beloved lost child), they specifically addressed that they were making this change to make the lyrics inclusive/broader. As they said, they chose to sing about "a precious person," making it relatable to more people. I've mentioned before that their gender-neutral lyrics are intentional and that they've said so, and this is an excellent example of that.
    The alternate title of BTOB's song "I'll Be Your Man" is "Pray." With that knowledge in mind, it's easy to see that _that_ is the meaning they focused on and built the story around. The entire thing is a plea for help, first to the uncaring, resistant heavens and then to the underworld whose help came at the cost of their lives. The whole performance is a prayer.
    Also, mnet (the channel/company) is shady af. Like, officially and notoriously, right down to the proven doctoring of show numbers and awards and whatnot. It's a longstanding history; there's a reason they're so often called "m-snake" or "m-sh1t" by people across all fandoms. Sooooo much was questionable or downright suspicious about the judges, rankings, etc on Kingdom, and the majority of us knew it (even if that awareness led to toxics in all six fandoms acting like their group was the only target and everyone else was getting treated fairly, or the alternate toxic fandom behavior where they were banding together to join forces and try to take down SKZ rather than spending that time boosting their own groups [seriously, there was a lot of really ugly behavior across the board]).
    Even the very first full stage was openly unfair -- three groups were given a small budget, while the other three were allowed larger budgets, leading to an obvious disparity in the kinds of stages each group was able to put on. Then once the internet found out and fandoms freaked out, mnet went "Oh, oopsie. Let's, um...I dunno, blame miscommunication or an intern or the position of the planets or something. Anyway, too bad. F*ck you all because there's nothing you can do to us. Thanks for all your outrage and fanwars making us trend." (And I say that as a fan of one of the highest-scored groups for that round, one of the three groups who benefited from the incompetence and crookedness of mnet allowing them a larger budget while screwing the other three groups.) Point being: Mnet is openly and proudly crooked and prone to manipulating numbers and results in their shows.
    Anyway, a lot of us realized at the time that there was a strong possibility that mnet decided SKZ needed to be dropped low for a round at some point to create drama and heightened online reactions (which is absolutely what the response indeed was), as well as keep all the other fandoms engaged. There was _no_ transparency or accountability about the mysterious anonymous judges, so at any time, mnet could simply decide that this group should go up in rankings or that group should go down or whatever, and no one would be able to question judges or the cumulative judging score or anything else. And there's a good chance that's what happened during this round: High-ranking SKZ needed a dramatic and startling extreme low for a week to stir everyone up. And that's exactly what happened. (It's probable they did this with other groups as well, not just SKZ, but understandably I was paying most attention to SKZ at the time. It was war for two months _while_ being stressed out about Hyunjin's well-being and future.)

    This is why I love SKZ man…….they took a song about missing a lover and imploring them to come back to you, and created a performance about sacrificing yourself and making a deal with the devil to bring a child, perhaps a little brother or son, back to life. In the behind the scenes for this performance, you see Han and Changbin writing their own raps for their parts, and Changbin specifically talks about how he wants to push the song in a different direction than the original by making his rap about watching someone you love be self-destructive/make bad decisions. Just….the creativity, the storytelling-I absolutely adore and admire it

  • @RM_formerlyjustRMbutYTsucks

    You should indeed see all of Kingdom. All six groups did an amazing job and did themselves proud. When you watch, you should view all of the stages for each round, as opposed to watching all of one group's stages and then going back and watching all of the next group's stages and so forth. Every round had a theme, and that theme is important to understanding each performance. So it's a lot more functional to see each episode -- all groups' performances -- in its entirety before moving on.
    Themes/assignments for each round's performance:
    -- *Intro Stage,* a 100-second performance of one of their award-winning songs to introduce themselves and what they're going to bring to the show (SKZ did "Miroh"). This is the only stage Hyunjin was in, as it was prerecorded before his BS hiatus was instituted. Msh1t did their best to cut him out of every shot except the performance footage itself, hence the lack of things like an ending fairy.
    -- *To the World,* a rearrangement of one or two of their existing songs and a different stage presentation than usual for that song/those songs (SKZ did "Ja-shin" aka "God's Effects" aka "Side Menu", which is "Side Effects" + "God's Menu")
    -- *Re-Born,* wherein the six groups are split into three pairs, and the two groups in each pair choose a song by the other group to reimagine and perform (this is the round containing the SKZ/BTOB swap)
    -- An episode that was a break from the show competition and was instead basically a recreational field day/mini ISAC competition, where we got to see the six groups competing in different sports, voting for the prettiest boy, being clowns, bonding with each other, etc.
    -- *No Limit pt 1,* wherein the six group were split into two supergroups of three (BTOB, SKZ, Ateez were Team Mayfly; Ikon, SF9, The Boyz were Team It's One). Each of the two supergroups then split their members into a dance unit (Lee Know, Felix, I.N + members from BTOB and Ateez), a vocal unit (Seungmin + members from BTOB and Ateez), and a rap unit (3RACHA + members from BTOB and Ateez). The vocal, rap, and dance units from each of the two supergroups then competed against each other (Team Mayfly vs Team It's One), and the winning supergroup of each of those stages all received the points for their individual teams (so if Mayfly won, then all three groups that were in Mayfly would receive points toward their individual group's total). So SKZ members are in three different performances in this round -- rap, dance, vocal.
    -- *No Limit pt 2,* where the supergroups are now dissolved and we're back to six individual groups. This performance has no restrictions or limits, so teams are expected to go all out. This is the round of "God's Ddu-du Ddu-du."
    -- *Who is the King,* the finale episode. Each group performed a new original song, and those songs were all released onto music sites on a Kingdom album that same day. This is the round of "Wolfgang." Unlike every other Kingdom version of songs, "Wolfgang" is available on music sites. And once Hyunjin came back, they added him into the part they'd written for him, then rereleased the recording, so the version now available online is ot8.
    -- In addition, SKZ, Ateez, and The Boyz all did complementary stages at MAMA2020 a few months before Kingdom to announce their inclusion in the show and build interest. Along with the full-group stages, there was the Triange Fight, a short dance "battle" between one member from each of the three groups. This is the only other Kingdom content Hyunjin appeared in.
    -- And to kick off the show, they started with the Performance Film of ep 0, a short dance solo by one member from each group (SKZ's dancer was Lee Know) to pre-introduce the theme/vibe/style of said groups. A lot of new people miss that this bit exists, so just in case: czcams.com/video/RKQEfIOSKW8/video.html
    Be aware that mnet was hacked last year, and many of the highest-view videos were deleted. Numerous groups were hit, but SKZ was particularly targeted -- many of their most iconic performances were wiped out, including essentially all of their Kingdom stages, MAMA2020, etc. This is why you will find no official-channel version of any of their full performances in Kingdom (in other words, versions that play uninterrupted by cutaways to other groups' reactions). Msh1t never even acknowledged the hack, let alone did anything to restore the lost videos. So things like the full performance of God's Ddu-du Ddu-du or MAMA2020's "f*ck you, MAMA" version of Victory Song (which acted as the announcement of SKZ's inclusion in Kingdom) lost tens of millions of views -- God's D4, for example, was somewhere around 30 _million_ views when it was deleted.

    At the end, the vocal duo alongside Changbin's rap is Seungmin on the lower part and Han on the higher. Lee Know had very few lines in this -- he was busy being a dance machine instead. After the sixteen bars of Changbin+Han+Seungmin, the final voices are Chris on the high background and I.N on the final words. Lee Know sang a few lines before they stormed the gates of the heavens, and he sang a line when he received the heart/whatever from Felix and was passing it along to Seungmin as they tore apart the heavens. That's the total of his lines in this (two years ago, Lee Know had not yet reached his current level of vocal skill; he was of more value to them dancing his ass off in this than he would have been singing).

    There is a story behind this. The group lost a child and wanted to bring him back to life. They went to heaven and where turned away. They made a blood sacrifice to the devil. He gave them a way to bring him back to them. It went wrong. The boys died and the child lives again

    love your reactions and yes I felt the same when I first saw it too. This was epic but believe it or not they didn't rank high for this performance on Kingdom. That is how epic all these performances are. As good as this was it wasn't as good as the others for that round of performances. My all time favorite most epic legendary performances was the collaboration vocal stage with Ateez, Stray Kids and BtoB. It was only one member from each group you had Jong-ho, Seungmin and Eunkwang doing a cover from IU called Love Poem. This performance will bring tears because it is so good and beautiful. I do mean all of these performances are a must watch because they are so epic and legendary. This is going to make me watch the entire KLW again. LOL for about the 5th time. since it broadcasted.

    They lost that boy.
    Meanwhile, a devil(Felix) got caught by angels(white dancers with wings) and are dragged to their temple by those angels and sealed in the temple.
    They missed that boy too much, so they decided to give their hearts and lives to the devil so that they got the boy back in return.
    Also, that devil got the power back by their sacrifices so he can break his seal and destroy the temple and make the dead boy alive.
    For that disappearing, they use camera trick. While the camera gives a full shot of Changbin's face and upper chest and then shows the left side of stage, the boy runs in right direction to escape from the range of the camera as quickly as possible. They showed in one of behind story vids.
    So, BTB's original romantic song became a dark story by SKZ. They did a really nice job and the result is great 😊

    I’m not upset but Seungmin was the first singer in the video and home and Han are the ones singing along with Changbins rapping at the end. Lee know did the cartwheel
