    Fun story: about 4 years ago, I was working a job building new dorms for an Indian casino out here in CA. Large general contractor running the job. I show up and they do the safety brief, at which time we're told that whenever you are 6 feet off the ground, you need to be tied off. Ok, kind of stupid, but not a huge deal. Then the safety lady goes on to reiterate: any time your head is more than 6 feet off the ground, you need to be tied off.
    "Excuse me, Miss Safety Officer, but where do you want me to tie off? Because I'm 6'5", and I don't want to get a safety violation on my first day just walking around."

      @@madmanwithaplan1826 good god, at my current site that would be an absolute nightmare.
      The site is a 6 floor multi residential building, the elevator is still in several crates on the first floor. There is no crane access for floors 2 to 5 so the staircase and scissor lift is out of the question. Not to mention they would be an absolute pain to navigate and store in the 6 foot wide hallway, and impossible to get into each suite of the building.
      Our crew consists of 3 people, counting myself and the boss, so having one person holding a ladder all day is not exactly feasible, though technically possible.
      The ceilings are 8 foot ceilings, steel stud + drywall. Definitely not structurally sound enough to use as an anchor point. Besides we cant be putting holes in the drywall at this stage of the project.
      Being a sparky, I practically live on the ladder. I'll grab the other guy to stabilize the ladder if I have to do something like reach over a few feet while up on a 12 foot ladder or something. Something where tipping the ladder is something that can happen easily and the resulting fall would be severe. But when up on a 8 foot in wedged up in an access hatch? Nah, I couldnt tip the ladder even if I wanted to.
      Thank god our safety guy is more or less for show on this site. He basically only bothers you if you're getting into some real sketchy shit (like when a plumbing apprentice was attempting to light a torch next to the site's propane tanks) and he just makes comments like "the safety glasses work better on your face than on your shirt" when he catches you without PPE.

      the worst is when you're working at seven feet but the nearest building steel to tie off to is at about 20. so you have get a big ladder, which hopefully you can complete your task off otherwise you would have swap ladders twice, climb to the top of said ladder risking greater injury should you fall from that height, then climb half way down the ladder, complete your task in 5 minutes then reverse said procedure.
      This is what happens when you ban lawn darts. I get most of us got into construction because we just had to find out what those paint chips tasted like as kids, but all those other kids that nature and a 4 ounce piece of sharpened brass would have taken out, went on to get useless occupational safety degrees and OSHA 500 cards to torment us and add 30% to the labor cost of jobs.

    There's a place in Texas I used to pick up pre-fab steel at, their whole setup was you securing your trailer while wearing a shoddy safety harness they provided. Granted the load can be high and slippery, but more often than not the load was greasy in places and covered in plastic so falls could happen. Main bad thing is that you were often alone in barn/warehouse with the possibility of being stuck in the air if you fell. They had to add security cameras after one big fella slipped and hung by his harness, too heavy as the thing cut off his circulation leading to death. Safety gear isn't always the safest bet.

    I've worked at the same place for 20 years and was there when we went through the transition to get more safety minded(large machine shop). I remember when they wanted us to be safe but some of the stuff we did was inherently unsafe and you couldn't do anything about it like deburring parts and finishes in certain areas you just HAVE to put your hands on while it's still in the machine spinning. I told them once I wouldn't do it because it was unsafe. Of course I was just screwing with them for getting on to me about something else safety related.... That's the part that sucks about safety, not everything can be made 100% safe. Accidents happen. I've actually seen safety blind people to dangers because "this area is supposed to be free of dangers!" There's no such thing. It was when we put yellow taped walkways on the floor. Nothing was supposed to be in the walkway so people wouldn't trip. Well a guy assumed there was nothing in the way and didn't look where he was walking and tripped on the corner of a pallet that was just barely over the yellow line. After that at safety meeting I always remind everyone of this and that nothing is made 100% safe. It's up to you to watch what you do and what's going on around you. You can't assume anything.

    Recently had a discussion about harness safety with my own safety man. According to procedures, you're suppose to tie of roughly 17' from the air if you're 4' up. I asked how that was possible if I'm not suppose to be up high without tying off. Hopefully I'll get my answer after my 2 week suspension is up.

    • @sebastiannettles9076
      @sebastiannettles9076 Před 2 lety +2

      According to OSHA you are allowed to go as high up on a ladder as you want if the purpose is to tie off. I just had a big issue on a site I’m working on about this and found that out lol.

    • @iglidor
      @iglidor Před rokem

      Which does not solve the other problem - Often when you are using tall ladders, there is nothing up there to tie your harness to.
      You absolutely can not tie yourself to ladder. You can not tie yourself to the lets say lights that you are working on there because they can not hold your weight.
      And if it is in cramped/inacessible space, you can not use lifting platform (if you even have one in first place.).
      Official answer is that in these cases you are required to build scaffolding. Even if the job is just to change lightbulb and it would take you 30 seconds tops, according to rules you need to bring all the pieces of scaffolding there, have someone certified for building scaffoldings to be present and put it together under his directions. Test it and then use it. And then of course dismantle it and put it back.
      Next time I will see someone do that, it will be first time

    That's not an OSHA rule. OSHA never requires the use of a harness when using a portable ladder. The four foot rule is about when fall protection is required while working on on an elevated platform or walkway and it only applies to general industry. The height is increased to six feet for construction. A guardrail counts as fall protection. This is a startlingly common misconception and the false belief that OSHA is requiring something so silly as a harness on a portable ladder is a big contributor to people shutting down their brains and failing to even attempt to learn and understand safety regulations.

    • @donkey4578
      @donkey4578 Před 2 lety

      I don't think safety people actually read or follow the guidelines of OSHA. They are trying to justify their position, so they come up with anything they can think of that sounds "safer" even though they have no real world field experience. I did fire sprinklers in a Conagra plant that required us to be tied off anytime on a ladder. Safety can make up whatever rules they deem fit. They had some dumb story where someone fell off backwards and landed on their head and died. But really it sounded like a bunch of bullsh1t and circle jerking from the safety team.
